Haven't seen this mentioned yet, but it seems Paul Hurst is in talks with Shrewsbury.

Not sure how I feel about this, on the one hand we've had a good start (without being particularly great lately) and we're overachieving so far this season. But on the other, for the most part of his reign he's not been all that popular and we've probably underachieved for the most part of his time here.

I'd be sad to see him go at this point but I'm not quite sure if it's a chronic irreplaceable loss.

Think a large part of us finally getting promoted was actually sticking with Hurst for so long and glad I defended him on hre for so long.

Don't really think Shrewsbury will be that good of a move if he did go but if he went many more fans will be sorry to see him go than this time last season.

And as said above and the many times I've defended him, the grass isn't always greener.

I've been a Hurst critic in the past, but he has become a better manager and we are improving with him. Last season he was under pressure and it showed. Going so close at Wembley the previous season plus #operationpromotion raised the expectation of the fans significantly - 'we've given you over £100k extra budget Paul - why aren't we top of the league above all these tinpotters' I admit I was somewhat in that place. He said he thought we'd win at Wembley if we got there - getting there was really hard and a really close call in the semi with Braintree. He was right though, the team lifted a gear at Wembley. This season you can see the pressure has gone and he looks less stressed - he has achieved and sensible Town fans will now give him time. I will be gutted if he goes to a smaller club in decline, albeit with a shiny new stadium and a nice training facilities...

If he does end up leaving then i hope that it will be with the best wishes of all GTFC fans after he finally got us out of that hell hole.
I will be very sad to see him go should he leave, but he will have my best wishes thats for sure.

Excuse my ignorance, but why do you consider promotion as underachieving?

Okay, but it wasn'

Fair enough, do you and others agree?

I didn't no, I considered top 5 and challenging for promotion the target each season. Most agreed with lew though amd thought nothing short of promotion was a failure and of course the only way to guarantee that was by winning the title. Hence why until this season he hasn't been popular.

It's how long it actually took, not the end product.

And if we're all honest, promotion when it came had its luck involved. We were fucking terrible for half a season, Hurst had gone totally stale. We got to Braintree away and Hurst was forced into a change with Monkhouse (who somehow played week in week out despite being terrible) injured and we ran them ragged. I've absolutely zero doubt that Monkhouse getting injured aided us getting over the line.

I don't buy what Frealaf says in terms of fans just wanted to waltz the league, that wasn't an expectation. But in our time in non league we never once got anywhere near the title, not even close. When we got over the line we limped over it.

I'd like Hurst to stay because we've done alright this year, but the strange decisions and negative tactics still lay beneath imo.

Hurst leaving according to John Tondeur, and he very rarely gets these things wrong.
Carl Robinson anyone?

If it wasn't already looking fairly nailed on, then surely it was when Doig came out and did that interview after yesterday's game? If he wasn't going then Hurst would have done it and said so.

Hurst has ducked out of interviews in the past when other things going on especially after a defeat, so it was nailed on Doig was doing the interview whether he was stayong or going.

But yeah looking increasingly likely he is going. Oh well we move on, he has recruited well for us lets hope we get someone decent in and not go with the cheap option as has happened so often in the past.

He didn't interview when the bookies made him favourite for the Notts County job either.

Gutted but when you're successful you move up the leagues. He had his faults especially when playing at home, or leading 0-1 with 20 mins to go, but he certainly has an eye for a player and usually has us very solid defensively.

Might be the better thing in the long run for us as apart from promotion he has never really won the fans over and the next time we hit a bad patch it wouldn't be long before they called for his head again.

Just need to make the right appointment now and not do anything on the cheap. (Especially with Neil Woods coming back last week as youth coach!!!)

From the outside, the Hurst/Grimsby fans relationship seemed a very weird one.

He seemed to achieve about on par with what you'd expect but was generally getting stick for it.

Disappointed but he was always gonna go to a division higher up when he got the chance. That's how we landed him in the first place and as mentioned above, not always on the best terms with the fans.

He seemed to achieve about on par with what you'd expect but was generally getting stick for it.

He didn't help himself though. He was always getting in there with snide little remarks towards the fans, it was pretty much the first thing he did during his interview on the pitch at Wembley after we beat FGR. I don't ever recall him holding his hands up and admitting he got something wrong, either. Despite this though, I liked him. He was very articulate, great eye for players (particularly strikers and defenders), instilled a great belief in the dressing room and didn't let any prima donnas disrupt that.

Still plenty to learn, but with a tactically adept assistant alongside him (don't know if Doig will follow him?) he could be a very good appointment for Shrewsbury.

Eternally grateful to him for stopping the rot. Good luck to him.

He's never had a great relationship with the fans, the abuse has probably dug deep over the years so I'm not surprised he fancies a new challenge. It was a great achievement to maintain our play-off position for 4 years running but he didn't have the ability to take us further, it seems as though he was happy to sit top 5 and roll the dice every year. If the ball bounced the other way we'd still be in the conference.

That said I always thought once went up he'd be a success in the league as it's generally easier to get promoted with the extra spots. There was never any doubt he would build us a decent team for whatever league we're in, but he still does have some major flaws in his game. If he gets the time to build the team he wants at Shrewsbury I think he'll be a success.

I'm grateful for everything he's done. He's forever a Grimsby legend as far as I'm concerned for getting us out of that shit-hole league and I'm glad it was him despite not being his biggest fan as he did work extremely hard, but as long as Fenty doesn't cop out I do think he's replaceable. Above all I wish him all the best.

Imagine if Fenty gave the job to Neil Woods...

Can't really get my head round this move tbh. Sure he's going up a league but if he held on a bit longer he could have got a better job than Shrewsbury. I'd suggest there's more to this than meets the eye.

I actually went for Fish 'n' Chips with Paul Hurst and Chris Doig a few months back, as part of the Operation Promotion campaign and Hurst was saying that there were a number of thing he would like to introduce but understood that whilst we were non-league, could not afford it. Maybe what he wanted hasn't materialised since we've got back in the league.

Yeah that's what I was hinting at. That piece Matt Dannatt did with him in the Telegraph the other week about not being allowed to appoint a fitness coach seems quite relevant now.

I'm pleased for him and for GY that it was him that got you up. Tactically, I always felt that we had a good chance if we got a lead on you or were holding out for a draw and he seemed to retreat into a tactical rut more often than was necessary/helpful. He's made some sound (and enviable) moves on players since you came up and before but I guess the relationship had run it's course.

I think you'll benefit from the change coming this early in the season and whilst you're in a decent position - provided you find the right replacement. You desrve better than most of the usual suspects that came up for us when Derry was teetering. I think Tony Mowbray might be a good fit but I hope you take a chance on someone younger and with potential - but I can't come up with one.

Will it be an ex-Scunthorpe manager?
