What will happen to Bury? will the be in NLN next season or do they rent a ground a climb up from step 9?

I'm no expert on this but I imagine they'll cease to exist after this evening?

Best bet a phoenix club in 2020/21 starting at Step 5?

...or Rochdale, Curzon or Salford. Will be a big shame to see Gigg Lane go.

I thought Step 5 was the highest a reformed club could enter the pyramid at, so in this instance the North West Counties League?

A reformed club would likely have to do what AFC Rushden and Diamonds did a few years back, have a youth team to support next season and then compete in men's fixtures from 2021-22.

Bury and Bolton's plights are incredibly sad but the EFL should have nipped this in the bud weeks ago, they're just as culpable as the crooked owners that both clubs had.

NWCL football for Bury sounds such a joke. The logistics of such a high-profile team making away trips to Prestwich Heys, Bacup Borough, Atherton Laburnum Rovers and Chadderton, especially given Bolton have a half-chance of fulfilling those same fixtures? Then again those footballing powers have been fuckwitted enough to let this happen in the first place. Bastards.

There's never been a Third Division Football League club going bust before so who knows what solution the FA might propose. I read one article a few weeks ago suggesting that if it ended like this there would be no attempt to relaunch a new Bury club, although I find that hard to believe.

When Portsmouth were on the brink a few years back there was speculation that they would be "too big" to restart in the Wessex League and could be accommodated in National South.

Do the council own Gigg Lane? Could they start off in the Evo Stik 2nd tier? (step 4?) I'm sure they'd get into that if they apply.

The knock-on effect is only 1 club relegated from League 2 this season. I take it that means one less relegated from the National League?

Very sad. They should be made to start at the very bottom like all teams, size of club should have no baring on this outcome. Wimbledon did it well no reason a club of Bury’s size can’t do the same.

Don't think so?. 4 up from L2 as per, 3 down from L1, 1 down from L2 and 2 up from here as usual

Shite. Must be efforts made to preserve it.

Remember when our former owners IOR wanted to buy our ground to re-develop it but the council wouldn't budge. Glad they did that as IOR then ran out of cash once the main benefactor got sent down and we'd have been knackered.

Think grounds should all be owned by the council

As per the precedent set in 2008, they should resume business 3 divisions below their current level, i.e. in National League North. :cool1:

No more crazy than Shaymen going to Rossendale Utd, Prescott Cables, Clitheroe and the rest. :ds:

Yeah but then that leaves you one club short in the National League if two are going up but only one coming down.
So probably right what MrGloverLover says I would guess.

How does Bury's expulsion affect the league?
Here's the official line form the EFL on what happens now League One is minus a team:
League One will now comprise of 23 Clubs for the remainder of the campaign and relegation places in the division reduced to three, which will result in a full complement of 24 Clubs in 2020/21.
A discussion will take place with EFL Clubs on the consequential impact in League Two when clubs next meet in September 2019.

They would have plenty of time to set up a new club to compete at senior level in time for 2020/21.

What happened with Rushden IIRC is that it was too close to the start of the senior season starting for the new club to be ratified in time etc.

Going by FA rules, a new club cannot start higher than step 5 - although when I think about it, that may only apply to non league clubs.

It may be a different kettle of fish for an EFL club.

I thought it was 4 leagues below the level you were at - which for a NL side would be step 5, but for an EFL Div 1 side would be step 3

Absolutely. And let's not get carried away with how Big Bury are. Yes they won 2 FA Cups over 100 years ago but they are not exactly giants. Their attendance in their L2 promotion season would still have only been the 4th biggest in the conference last season.

That said I do hope the fans can give it a go and get a phoenix club up and running.

Wasn't part of the problem that there is a very large mortgage secured, taken out by the previous owner to allegedly prop up his business, on the ground and this was ultimately the most difficult problems with the Bury deal.

Thanks for that Brother. That was also the time the FA stopped making a distinction between new clubs and reformed clubs. Reformed clubs, like The Shaymen are a continuation of the club that had gone bust. :ds:

I've seen quite a few Bury fans on social media who seem to think they can just be put into the National North.

Why I feel sorry for what's happened to them, everyone else had to start again at the bottom so I don't see why they think it should be different for them.

I don’t think it’s done to offend, it’s just ignorance on the protocol of phoenix clubs.
