Gutted Curzon Ashton can't go up to the National League now. I wanted to see some headloss from Oldham fans when they inevitably lost 1-0 there next season despite having 95% of the fans in the ground.

Histon got particularly close and are probably the smallest club out of those mentioned, even smaller than Hayes and Yeading!

Must have been difficult for Cambridge to suddenly be competing with a local village team that were superior for a short time.

Lewes had to be the smallest we’ve ever played, though histon ran them close.

Same here. We beat Stevenage 5 nil, thought it was going to be a breeze. 'Bonkers' Brian Little taking us straight back up.

Fifteen years later....

next game, humbled by York City live on Setanta..... Mike Ingham had a worldy for them

As said above, definitely Histon. Quick google it’s a village of 4,000 people

Anyone remember how they were funded? Pretty sure they spent a bit of money and signed a team of massive shit housing giants.

Alty is the only one I've not been to and they seem a nice club so I'd have them.

Alty for me...easy access from Manchester and maybe about 45 minutes from us. Solihull second...again close and Solihull is one of the few reasonable areas of the dump that is Birmingham. Bromley 3rd because i love a London away day. All 3 purely because I like having a new team and ground that I don't think we'd ever played before. I'd imagine there'd be quite a few teams that will outnumber home fans at these grounds.
Solihull is a pain in the arse though, train to Brum, train to Solihull and then a bus or a fairly long walk. Think it was about 45 mins. I had to leave early to make sure I could get back to London when we went there a few years ago. Thankfully we were 2-0 down and it was a shite game.
Barnet even at The Hive is an easier London away day than Bromley.

Food and Drink in a decent spot and then just hop on the Northern Line. Bromley is a pain in the arse.
My recommendation would be to have beers and scran in Peckham if you have to go to Bromley again and then go from Denmark Hill as it's about 15mins on the train from there. Bromley is also well connected to Victoria which isn't great for beers but from there you can get to some good spots.
Not sure why Barney is considered a shit away day? Have your fun in London and get the tube out for the match, same as going Wembley really.

That being said, would prefer Alty for distance and a new face.
"same as going Wembley really" is actually inscribed on the gates of The Hive.

The away end and bar are great at The Hive (well the bar would be if they staffed it properly and poured beers in advance). One of the problems though is that it's nowhere near Barnet so their attendances have plummeted, especially midweek. Atmosphere from the home fans was non-existant when we went in 21/22. We were very lucky to get a point from 2-0 down that day but part of the reason we did was because we had about half the crowd there in our end and we pretty much vacuumed the ball into the net twice late on.

It's definitely not a shit away day though, I fully agree on that.

The first time we dropped in 2010 we won away at title favourites Crawley first game and I thought it was gonna be a right walk in the park.
Then next we played Hayes and Yeading at home - and lost 2-1. :bg:

In my time supporting us, we've lost to Hayes, Yeading and Hayes & Yeading.

I’m firmly in Barnet’s camp for these play offs. They deserve it over the course of the season. The manager down their Brennan has done an incredible job, they’re a proper outfit now, really good going forward

We came down with them back in 2018 too so fitting to come back together.

Alty would be my second choice of course.
We went there for a cup re-play this year and they made us feel very welcome! even after sticking 4 on them, nice ground as well so its Barnet for me.

Let us all think of the reconciliation and water under the bridge implied by the merger between two clubs, one of whose fans used to chant "We're Hayes, not Yeading, we're gonna kick your head in".

As for Barnet, I just kinda wish they'd move back to Barnet, really. They truly are just a bus stop in Canon's Park as things stand.

Lewes are a waaaaaay bigger club than Histon. Proper non-league club with a nice ground and bit of history.

Histon got more, but i appreciate Lewes have a decent set up and have a women’s team?

Did they just announce that they are moving back to Barnet? a month or so ago? I may well be making that up. But huge if true.

Their chairman announced the aspiration of returning there, to a planned new ground pretty much next to where their old one was. However...within a couple of days the local council made clear that they'd oppose planning permission being granted to any such proposal, so I'd not bet on it happening.

What type of council, especially when they’re being fucked centrally by the conservatives would oppose a move which would bring money and jobs into the local area?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure Barnet Council and Tony Kleanthous the Barnet Chairman absolutely despise each other and it's been a very long running feud between both parties. I'm pretty sure that was the reason as to why Barnet moved in the first place over a decade ago.

Ah I see. What a ridiculous stance for the Council to take.

seems that they had a good cup run and got to the 4th round in 08-09

Nat Knight-Percival, Jack Midson, Mat Mitchell-King, Damien Reeves and Danny Wright all played for them in that season

More common than you'd like really. Our council has been thwarting any attempt we make at planning a new stadium since the 90s. They've inadvertently saved us from a couple of close shaves with having an out of town Lego stadium though to be fair to them.

True enough, and very to the point, but for the first time ever the council has recently gone Labour. I suspect Kleanthous (who frankly doesn't appear to be a man of sound judgements) naively thought this might make them less NIMBYish than the Tories.

Been there, done that

(Actually we never lost to Curzon in any of our nine meetings during the days in tier 6, but we did record defeats at wanky little outposts nobody has heard of like Vauxhall Motors, Histon and Salford City)

My viewpoint is definitely clouded by the best away of our first non-league spell (Inflatables 2015). Definitely one of those grounds that you go to watch the game and get out of there. Understand the atmosphere point but I’ve been to plenty worse and facilities wise, like you said, it’s pretty good (anyone who’s been to Kings Lynn will be grateful for what they have at their club). Never been to Solihull but I imagine it’s similar to Nuneaton (if you ever went??).

Hayes and Yeading were our first non-league awakening, think we lost our 3rd game in the Blue Square 2-1 at home. Somehow not the worst result of the season!

Some of our fans want Solihull cos its local it might be but its still a pain in the arse unless you drive even for us.

Along with Lewes & Histon, I remember a few other very small clubs that got up to the Conference/National League down the years we were there. Leigh RMI, Droylsden, Farsley Celtic & North Ferriby spring to mind. Clubs that even made us look big (ish). Can't imagine any of them ever making the EFL, although Leigh did finish near the top once I think.

Didn't do any of those clubs much good being up there, they've all either dropped down a few leagues or gone bust/reformed.

Yep. Wouldn't compare them to Leigh, Droylsden etc though. Bigger support, decent history and think they'd been at that level for years before they ran into financial problems. Were already in trouble before Mike Connett stepped in and destroyed them completely. Although at least they eventually moved to their new ground for a bit before he took out all the safety equipment and they were forced out.

Think they had Dino Maamria as manager last time I saw them.
