I just watched the limited Sky highlights from this weekends fixtures and several things that registered. Carlisle look awful at the back, Notts County also look bad at the back and really wasteful up front. Accrington were very lively upfront and caused problems.

You dont say!

We have actually improved on our defence though from last season, it was just an off day from Parkes who is our new rock at the back.

By that logic, Coventry should really be called AFC Somewhere On the Side of a Motorway Between Coventry and Nuneaton.
The Ricoh Arena is still in the boundaries of the city of Coventry, even though it may be on the edge of the city. So thus our name is correct. Unlike Blundell Park in Cleethropes.

Shame that all the attempts of Grimsby to annex Cleethropes during the 50s and 60s failed.

The club was formed in Grimsby and did actually play in Grimsby before moving to Blundell Park. Whether it is in Grimsby or Cleethorpes (nb: not "Cleethropes"), doesn't really matter. It's essentially the same single entity.

Frank Nouble, ex West Ham, signed from Southend. Can sometimes seem to lack a bit of coordination but a real handful. Five goals this season now and potentially an excellent partnership with Padraig Amond judging on this afternoon's evidence. Hoping for an altogether more relaxing season!
Podge could be a great signing for you. Really annoyed we didn't try and get him in. Watch out though, if he starts playing well I would bet good money that Paul Hurst will be sniffing around him in January.

Shocking challenge in the Barnet vs Stevenage game. What was he thinking?!
The Stevenage fans at the game thought that there was nothing wrong with the challenge.
Unfortunately for us, without Akinde there is zero confidence among any of our strikers that they can score a goal. Coulthirst appears to lack the basic skill of controlling a football for a start.

See Shaq is keeping consistent can't believe some of our fans wanted to keep him in the summer. One of our fans described him as a box of tricks. I can only assume he meant a box of twix or some other inanimate object.

The only people he's tricking are the fans of whichever club he plays for!
Also, his feet seem to be tricked by whatever commands they receive from his brain..

They shouldn't be because he couldn't slow play down anymore without actually stopping. Genuinely feel sorry for you.

I wasn't at the game and it's difficult to see from the highlights how bad the challenge was but Gorman is know to be a bit stupid.

We were well on top until the sending off then it was all Barnet, think the woodwork was hit 3 times before HT. If the Barnet strikers could hit a barn door Barnet would've won easily.

A fair enough summary of the match. Stevenage were certainly the better side until the sending off and once they had reorganised after half-time, they managed to contain us much more comfortably.
They looked a decent side last season and they look a decent side this season.

At this rate we'll see another relegation battle between us, Swindon Town, Chesterfield, and Port Vale.

Hattrick isn't bad for a twix

Good strong win for us today. Newport looked good and were the better side in the 1st half. We came out much better in the second half and scored a good goal to win us the match. From where I was stood we should have had a penalty and Newport reduced to 10 men for a handball on the goal line but at least we held on.

3 games at home so far, all 1-0 wins. Hopefully we can keep it going.

Seems a fairly open division so far which is good, no big dominant teams like last season running away with it should make it interesting.

Good win for us today but it was so nearly a repeat of last year's one all draw. Once again, we were clearly the better side for the first 60/70 mins just like last year, but then we take the lead and sit back instead of pushing on and making sure of the win. However this time Col U didn't get an equaliser even though they went close on a couple of occasions, one of which was a sitter and I couldn't believe my eyes when their lad somehow failed to put it away.

Overall, a fully deserved three points but so close to being only one. It's a given that sides in search of a goal will risk more in the closing stages of a game and throw more men forward, but then again, do not invite the pressure onto yourself by dropping too deeply dear Shaun.

First half was pretty even but after half time we were utterly abysmal. Completely powderpuff going forward and prone to a mistake at the back. Nobody to take control of the game in the middle. It's going to be a long season.

An entertaining game with little between us. We were better first half and Exeter stronger in the second. Paid the penalty of not converting pressure and chances in first half. Goal line clearances at both ends. Franks shot hit the post and your guys went in - about the sum of the difference. No attacking options off the bench didn't help. Would think Exeter very happy with 3 points. Draw was a fair result. 7 out of 8 games this season have been away - maybe taking its toll in terms of recovery times. Still a vast improvement on last season and an encouraging start.

forgot about you being away this month, makes your start all the more impressive. I made a cheeky little prediction you'd be promoted this season

Steady on mate. Nothing would make me happier but a season of mid table respectability will do just fine plus having a half decent pitch and not being an embarrassment to the league.

Three firsts for us today.

First clean sheet.

First league game that we managed to keep 11 men on the pitch.

First time we've beaten Crewe since the battle of Waterloo.

You beat Crewe first game in the 2001-02 season.

I have a feeling that we played Crawley and Colchester at the right time. Although I agree with the analysis, we have a squad and manager that are capable of turning out the same kind of performance. Thankfully, we've somehow managed three clean sheets in a row and, especially with the calming influence of Jabo on the pitch, we're finishing some of the loads of chances created by essentially having 3 strikers through the middle.

Well done for giving Jabo a song to set him up for another cameo appearance.

Barnet away next week should give us an indication of how solid at the back we really are. Our clean sheets at home were achieved by playing in the opposition half, backed up by a quality experienced keeper and a couple of diving CB headers. Crawley were just in a daze when they tried to go forward.

I've got my Crewe ticket but not yet sure if I'll get down to the Hive.

I thought Colchester were the better side in the first half. Then in the second half we took control. Taylor, Halliday, Forde, and Brown all had terrific games.

Very happy with the 3 points and a clean sheet, it should give us some confidence for the Barnet game.

Even after yesterday's setback one thing has encouraged me so far with our start to the season. For the first time since around 2002-03, we look defensively capable, and we're not even playing our full first choice defenders either! What a difference binning off the three Steve Davis favourites that were our weaknesses for years (Guthrie, Turton and Davis Jnr) makes.

We have one of the best forward lines in the division on paper, unfortunately without Jones due to injury and Cooke from last season, the forwards aren't getting the service they would've got last season under Artell. Lowery and Wintle are two very young and inexperienced lads who've shown great qualities in the midfield, but they just aren't feeding the strikers with accurate passes. In time I hope they'll start to run at the opposition more rather than play the ball out sideways, but it'll be interesting to see how Grant and Walker will get on when they play midfield in the coming weeks before Jones comes back. Out wide we've been found wanting too, we're failing to attack teams quick enough and allowing them to regroup defensively to deal with our powder-puff crosses in games.

I genuinely believe we'll have a Top 7 defence this year, but we need to address our issues in midfield. We know Chris Porter and Chris Dagnall can score goals, we know George Cooper and the injured James Jones can create chances for this side, but others need to step up to the plate rather than let those three or four players carry them all year...

Yep agree with the assessment. Seen all our games so far and I'd say Newport looked the best out of the sides we've faced. Nouble could be an unstoppable force at this level if he's on it and motivated.

Play like that every week and Newport won't be close to the bottom of the table, but of course it's early days.
