I've always considered us Cheshire. I played cricket for Cheshire when I was at school, and Tranmere do indeed play in the senior cup. CH42 is also a Cheshire post code. Blame Thatcher

Local government boundaries are irrelevant to important issues like football, cricket and birth-right. They've been trying to kick Furness (including Barrow) out of Lancashire since I left home in the early 70's but the town and village teams still play in the Lancashire cups and leagues. You won't find any more fervent and noisy Lancastrians at Old Trafford in the coming months than the Dalton/Ulverston crowd.

With regard to Cheshire though it's very weird. The people of Stockport have Cheshire flags and believe themselves to be a part of Cheshire still, I don't tend to see that with Tranmere or people from the Northern Wirral though.

And then there's Warrington and Widnes who are now part of Cheshire but were once Lancashire who seem to have accepted their Cheshire status.

I'm happy Cheshire still exists. There were radical proposals in the 1970s were to bump Chester off to Merseyside, Macclesfield and Northwich off to Greater Manchester and us off to Staffordshire. I'd be mortified if I had to come from the same county as them buggers down the A500!

The government wanted Cheshire to follow Westmorland and Huntingdonshire into oblivion, thus losing our identity, if that isn't radical I don't what is?

Not sure half our fanbase agree. Some think we are 6 miles from Barnet, some 400 yards from London Borough of Barnet. Some say we are in Edgware others that we are London Borough of Harrow. Quite how some fans can think we represent a London Council is beyond me.

True, we did. I've had this discussion quite a lot with a friend of mine from Stockport, and we agree that we're both basically part of Cheshire, although it gets confusing.

Totally relate. In our folk lore, north of the Duddon is hill billy country and in some of those valleys "There Be Monsters."

Good old Cumberland and Westmorland. Can't believe Westmorland was a county in its own right though, all it seems to be is Kendal and Windermere with assorted grasslands.

So you, as does everyone, hadn't noticed the true county town of Appleby. I think its the ultimate in "rural" until you get north of the border. If sheep had the vote, as well as us, next week would be a fight between the Herdwicks and an immigrant Swaledale/Rough Fell coalition.

Funnily enough I was travelling through Brough and Kirkby Stephen yesterday so I was around the area. I've been Appleby before and I reckon the population is barely over 1000. Definitely the most rural place England has to offer along with the Northumberland backwaters!

Most are willing to give Murray some time to put a side together and have a whole pre season to do what he wants. From the start of the season it was obvious Cox had set us up to play 3-5-2, took massive gambles on unproven cheap talent from abroad as well as players with long-term injuries. None of these gambles paid off; only Lambe has turned out decent from abroad and both Jones and Hearn haven't played 90 minutes all season, add onto that Clucas being sold on deadline day so there was no quality there at all.

When Murray took over he wanted to play with wingers but we only had 2 on the books and both had barely played all season. So Murray had to rebuild the depleted squad in January where on paper, all his signings were excellent and above the quality we saw under Cox. But yet again it didn't work out, Blair got injured in his second game and the rest were all massively behind schedule after not playing for the first half of the season.

The consensus is that his emphasis on bringing youth through, in particular his management of Jack Thomas has been a breath of fresh air, for the past 7/8 years there's been no home-grown talent in the side. Plus being able shift the deadwood in the side and hopefully bring in players of a similar pedigree to those in the summer and we might have a decent season.

What has gone wrong with Paul Buckle's career? He did a great job at Torquay, getting them out of the Conference after only two seasons and nearly making it to League 1 two years later, but he's been a disaster at every club he's been at since. And it can't be simply down to being one of those managers (like Gary Mills) who's good in non-league but crap in the League, because he did poorly at Luton who were still in the Conference when he was there.

Don't know, but even the Torquay fans on here don't seem to think very highly of him. He just seems to be a general all-round shit.

start a thread on him and I'm sure you'll find out. I remember something about his first action as Bristol Rovers boss being to tell the players that he hated Bristolians. Can't remember why Torquay fans disliked him but I'm sure they'll tell you.

I think because he was just an arrogant tosser tbh. It didn't help that whilst at their play off final, he had already decided he wanted to come to us and what looked like he took his eye off the ball completely and they lost. With us, when things weren't going well, he pinned a club legend against the wall by the neck, and also called all Bristolians c***'s

Besides being a bit of a prick he was just tactically absolutely inept, he would often try to shoe horn 4 strikers into our side, in Gray, Fleetwood, Rendell and Shaw. The amount of times we lined up with a completely unbalanced team was ridiculous. With the team we had that season there is no way we should have missed the playoffs but we did. The FA cup run papered over the cracks and when that ended he dipped out to go to America with his partner which was an absolute blessing as given the amount of managers we had gone through in the preceding seasons I'm not entirely sure there was the apetite amongst the board to fire another one.
