I thought Brabin was the first one to experiment with him in centre mid, although I could well be wrong. Buckle was probably the one who tried it out most extensively, to horrific effect (not that I blame Jake for that).

Centre mid seems to be Cambridge's strongest area so I doubt that would be the thinking behind a move for Howells. From an outsider's perspective they could definitely do with a wide left option though. I suppose the links with Howells and Ferguson - both players who can play left midfield or at left back - make sense when you consider that their only left back cover is s̶h̶i̶t̶ still transfer listed.

We're after Matt Clarke from Ipswich, he's 18 and plays CB. Thats all I know as never heard of him. We still don't have a RB.

CMS still playing hard to get then?

Played 70 odd minutes for us tonight. Usually reliable ITK posters on our forum reckon that neither Notts County nor Southend are in the running, but apparently Rotherham have offered him something. If that's true we might well be screwed.

Either way, we probably won't know his next destination for sure until the start of August. There's a little known rule with Football League contracts that means a club has to pay any players they release an extra month's wages - i.e. if a contract expires 30th June, the old club has to pay the player July's wages too. This is only the case if the released player doesn't sign for a new club during the extra month.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/2409939/League-row-on-players-contracts.html

In Mackail-Smith's case, he was supposedly on crazy wages at Brighton (I've heard £17k per week bandied about more than once, no idea how accurate). Wherever he goes next, he'll be on a fraction of that (prior to this summer, our max basic wage was in the £1.5k per week range apparently, it's higher now by all accounts but it's still unlikely we could offer even a quarter of his Brighton wage). So it's really not in his interests to sign any contract until August 1st, after he has received his last pay cheque.

As far as we know Ray Trew has moved on to our other target, I heard this player would cost us more in terms of up front costs.
He's yours Luton!

He was never yours in the first place! As for Rotherham, I think location may play a factor, but its Championship football. Beggars can't really be choosers. I'm confident he'll be a Luton player on 1st August.

I hope he signs for someone at League one or Championship level cause the amount of fapping on here will be unbearable if he signs for a league two club

I don't think Jeff Hughes has been brought in to play wide left and seeing him play against Norwich for 30 mins on Friday I'm even more convinced he's been brought in for his experience and calm in the middle of the park. The fact we're going after Shane Ferguson after signing him is a clear indication we're still after the elusive winger we need.

I wouldn't mind Howells as I think he will give Dunk protection in defence as well as giving us something going forward but I don't think he's worth 50k. Luton are just playing hardball.

Yes Howells would not be brought in as a centre midfielder - we already have Keith Keane, Luke Berry, Geraoid Morissey (who's looked excellent in pre-season btw), Conor Newton, Jeff Hughes and Liam Hughes who can play there, plus Ryan Donaldson who may play off Corr. I doubt we need 8 centre midfielders....

I think we can do better than Howells personally and I certainly wouldn't want to pay much of a fee for him. That said he is defensively disciplined and will "do a job". But it just seems to be a similar signing to Johnny Hunt to me.

Are teams really still fucking around with Jeff Hughes as a winger?! The bloke's always been a central midfielder yet we appear to be the only team ever to work that out...and that was before he had his leg snapped in half.
He's not always been a central midfielder at all.

We played him on the left wing, and that got him his move from L2 to the Championship.

Jimmy Keohane any good Exeter fans? Apparantly on trial with us.
I actually think Jimmy K. is a bit better technically than the others have said. He is a bit lightweight but technically he's not bad, can play a decent pass on his day and takes up some good positions. He needs to work on his shooting and needs a lot more muscle on the ball though.
I think he will be a bit of a late developer.

Money won't be shelling out 100k+ on Howells or he would have done that by now. Instead we move our interest onto others like Shane Ferguson. We have Newton and Donaldson already but his fitness is a concern so another winger is required.

Didn't Doggett tell someone at the Open Day that there would be no more signings? Though we will be looking at keepers now, depending how long Dunn is out for.

Where did you hear that? First I've heard of that. I was told to expect the worst about Dunn at the opening day and it's likely to be 4-5 months so there is no doubt we'll be in the market for a keeper.

Is it a blessing in disguise? I think so as I've never rated him.

I wasn't fussed, honestly I think we already have enough options up front now.

If Luton sign him then on paper they are favourites for the league. Without him they may fall short again unless JS has a back up plan.

It's clear for CMS Luton is last resort or he would have signed by now. Luton are relying on clubs not coming in for him which is a dangerous game. Someone from League one is bound to take a game on him.

He wouldn't though. Wherever he ends up, he won't sign it until August 1st or after for the reason mentioned above. He's not going to waive the huge additional weekly income which he is due until the end of July.

Yeovil are supposedly interested in signing Mark Beck. He's currently transfer listed, and is probably 4th/5th choice striker for us.

He came through our youth system, and being 6ft5in he looked a decent prospect. However, he hasn't lived up to potential and his game-time has been limited.

I'd be moderately satisfied if he finds a new club, though some fans on our forum would like to see him stay as he offers us something different and is still fairly young.

We don't have much of a choice but wait and see. I've watched two preseason 5 min clips of our games and watched him rather than follow the ball. He looks very sharp, moves extremely well and intelligently and is aware of who is around him, looks along the line and is always looking to time a run or spin off a the centre half. Way too good for this level.

I'm in the opposite camp to Kenny and expect someone to snap him up. If we do get him...... wow.

The CMS saga has become like watching the fourth coat of paint drying.

The candidates for his signature like willy measuring contenders at the annual eunuch games.

errmmm. Remember the Matt Green wet dream. (there's a song in there - OK maybe not)

Aren't we allowed one too even if we wake up and ours turns to dust. We just get to dream that little longer than Mansfield. Standard.

Arr bless, I thought you lot were constantly living the dream?

I can't personally confess to ever having a ''Matt Green wet dream'' although I'm obviously pleased he's returned, as would any club who'd had their fortunes changed by him.

Am hoping to see a quality player like CMS at Field Mill this season, just hoping that one of you gets on with it and finally signs him.

A few updates on our front.

Alex Woodyard and Francois Zoko will not be offered contracts.

On trial Dulwich Hamlet left back Frazer Shaw will remain on trial for now and looks like he could sign for us.

Connor Essam will more than likely sign for us - But Shane Lowry has to go first (Come on Birmingham & Coventry..).

The club desperately want to sign Jack Payne. Hendon has not given much away, but says both clubs have to agree on a fee - Which looks to be proving as a stumbling block. Payne himself is happy to sign, meetings taking place this week.

Orient have a real mismatch of players who are actually very good and players who are so-so at best.

I hear you. It has become a bit of a drawn out saga, but as mentioned above clear why, as he's collecting his Brighton wages still so won't sign anywhere yet.

Really hope Matt Green stays fit and does well for you lot. He's a good player and tore the Conf apart and could here to.

Tonight's obligatory random trialist is Simon Dia, a massive striker formerly of Valenciennes, Lekhwiya and Amiens. Obviously.

Apparently Rob Lee has just mentioned on talksport that his eldest son - Olly - is hopefully joining us tomorrow. Not sure if that means trial or permanent, seems a bit odd if the latter as we are well stocked in central midfield.

I think he was on loan at Plymouth last season - any thoughts Argyle fans?
