Two youngsters in on loan is fine by me, really - especially as the QPR lad appears to be extremely positionally versatile. Our squad is already plenty big enough and there aren’t any starting places up for grabs at the moment.

Colchester have signed Matty Longstaff on loan. Seems his career is going backwards a little, wasn't he at Mansfield last season?
I remember last January when we signed Elliot Anderson and Mansfield signed Matty Longstaff -- One of the Mansfield brigade was saying how much they had the better player. Six months on and ????

On the face of it that Barnsley lad seems a good player, plenty of Championship appearances, will certainly play, we just needed so much more than that. 3 centre backs until Jan and only one looks up to it, one recognised striker. Bonkers.

Haha Hurst has obviously gone “why not it’s better than nothing” just as the deadline approaches.

Wish we’d done the same :(
Haha yeah, I think we've just been missing out on striker options consistently throughout the window so he's just got someone in here. Which Hurst says he doesn't do however some due diligence will have been done but I can't imagine it's to the level of a permanent signing. I don't think he has been described as highly rated though, which is obviously a little worrying.
So we managed to sign not one but two strikers last night! Only problem is they are both youngsters on loan! Though with the amount of chances we create hopefully one knows where the net is otherwise it will be a long season. Could go either way them two.

As for Hunt was obviously very good for us during early season last year when the whole team looked decent, feel he was one of the players who disappeared during our bad run though. Obviously Hurst likes him enough to offer 3 years, but feel if the rumours of 6 figure fee is true, that the money could have been better used elsewhere. We shall see, and hopefully we have the early season Hunt.

Oh and because we have Glennon this season I completely forgot how many goals Waterfall got last season from Hunts set prices, it seemed most weeks it was Hunt corner, Waterfall goal, with Glennon as well most sides won't want to be giving us many set prices now
Yeah the problem with Hunt's time with us was that we didn't see him in the side that came back into form in the second half of the season. He was class at the start and he's certainly got the ability to do that at this level. I feel one of the major reasons we slumped last year was getting overran in the middle of the park and outworked. Hunt was probably a part of that but he wasn't the only one that contributed. I think the midfield players we have now are much more suited to battling than they were when Hunt was last here so hopefully this can enable us to get him on the ball in advanced enough positions for him to cause a threat because we know that if he can start zipping balls about we'll start stretching teams. He offers something different in the middle of the park that we definitely don't get with Green and Holohan. He's probably closest to Morris in terms of what he brings, so it'll be interesting to see if those two play together much. Hurst is obviously a huge fan and it seems like Hunt was desperate to get back here which speaks volumes for the setup we have here, in that he wanted to be at Town playing rather than being on the bench for his hometown club in a division higher. He seems to have a superb relationship with Giles Coke too, which I'd imagine was a factor in him coming back. Very exciting signing and one that would never have come off under Fenty.

Only 3 CB’s when we look best playing a back 5 is alarming, especially when two of them are gash.

Agreed, all in all its a good signing but it's paying a fee for a player in a position that we didn't massively need.

Going off our start to the season (and to an extent last season) our defence and midfield are more than good enough to compete towards the right end of the table, it's up front we are lacking, could that money have been better utilised there? Who knows, quite obvious everyone is struggling to find a striker.

Hopefully with Hunt and one of these youngsters at least (or even khan and Orsi coming back) that is the missing piece sorted and we can push on.

I agree that we definitely needed an established/senior type striker more than a CM but that's not to say that we paid a fee for Hunt instead of a striker. If we'd have made good enough progress on the striker front we might have seen us pay a fee for one and for Hunt. If we're gonna be playing 3 CMs though, it makes sense to bring another one in so it's not like Hunt is an unnecessary signing, especially when we consider that Morris has had injury problems in the past.

I really hope that Orsi turns out to be decent, I think the early signs indicate he might have something about him. With him coming back and Pepple, Simmonds and Richardson we've now got a load of options up top. I'm liking the look of this squad.

I think that we are waiting for official confirmation as I read we filed the paperwork late. Which seemingly was down to Hibs piss farting about with the fee structure. I suspect we'll find out later today when we get something official. Hibs have already announced it, but they are a shower.

Everything was agreed Wednesday evening - medical, personal terms and fee to be paid full and up front.

Yesterday Lee Johnson/Hibs decided to lower the agreed fee and pay in instalments. Stand off ensued. Hibs blinked first and caved. May have led to late paperwork.

I switched my thought process towards the end, it’s nice to have a striker but if we are going with 1 up top we probably have enough options with the young lad coming in, we just need one of them to cement their place.

Hunt is an excellent signing IMO, very good on the ball and he’ll wise up with some tough, experienced CMs alongside him. I see him as an investment and a good one at that.

Still plenty of free agents up for grabs. Suprised no one has snapped up Callum Macdonald and Callum McManaman who were on our books last season. Both more than capable of doing a job at this level.

Weird to see Plymouth let Jephcott leave? Seemed to be in good form last season unless it was a purple patch.

We were in for Alex Gilbey and it was pretty close, but in the end he wanted to stay down south.

What are Swindon's thought on McKirdy? I think all sides like a player who's a bit of a wind-up on the pitch, but he seems to be a wind-up, who steps over the mark and actually just comes across generally as an absolute prick you wouldn't really want your Club to sign?

Bit of a meltdown from Mansfield failing to sign anybody, last summer we tried to sign Tom Naylor, he bailed last minute and I don’t think we’ve signed somebody to make up for that CB since and we really needed a striker due to Oates being out for 3-4 months.

Upfront options now are Bowery, Akins, Swan and Gale, now considering Clough likes to play two of them at wing back and the other two are young and unproven it seems a weird risk for the club to take. Positive is we signed O’Toole post transfer window last season and he turned out to be a really solid signing so maybe we can pull off another CB signing so we can leave Hawkins upfront.

It’s disappointing but not the disaster some would make out and overall I’m happy with our earlier business, Hiram Boateng and Pym in particular.

I think it's becoming clear that Hurst won't do permanents now unless the player is seen as having the right attitude and work ethos as well the good stat analytics - Jason Stockwood has said that is our approach to recruitment and that's why we are spending more on staffing the recruitment team. No doubt we had a short list of target strikers and we've missed out on them. I expect the budget was there for both Hunt and the striker. Having missed out, he's gone for loans, with the Burnley lad ticking the right boxes because he's a season loan. Simmonds perhaps more to get another body in having missed out on the permanent - may have been Harry Smith, don't know. I read somewhere that Simmonds can play out on the left, so he may have been signed to give that option pending Scannell returning.

We've loaned striker Kwesi Appiah to Colchester for the season.

When fit he is better than this division. He will play 20 odd games and score 10 goals.

We can't shoot or score and we let last seasons top scorer join a relegation rival after barely giving him ten minutes this season. I am starting to get a little concerned.

Casey

Edit : sorry barramatt. For striker please read "experienced striker".

He was better than League Two (not so sure now he's 32) but that "when fit" is doing a lot of heavy lifting. It was the miraculous recoveries to go and play for Ghana while being unfit for league action that wound everyone up when we had him.

Would you care if you had a player with 23 goals and 10 assists to their name last season who happened to be a bit of a prick?

It’s nothing personal for me but it was the right thing for the club to get a decent fee and add ons for a player OOC at the end of the season. Reinvested the fee well seemingly.

Seems to be a consensus that he's very decent. Hopefully this will mean we've seen the last of Lee Brown who is congenitally incapable of passing forward and miles away from the player we thought we were getting last year.

Rumours today we wanted Harry Smith and Odin Bailey but lost out Smith very close apparently Exeter coming in did it.

Agree. His bookings for dissent really pissed me off. He shot often when players were better positioned for an easy pass. His hair was a mess and his socks were too low.

But with the ball he was electric at times which is what you pay money to see. And he scored goals.

Stockport fans looks like you've signed LWB Chris Hussey from us. Defensively he's still solid but going forward he just doesn't have the pace any more. Can still hit a good free kick or corner though so you have some players who can attack set pieces he can do a job in that sense.

We need a LCB in a three more than a LWB so if he's better defensively than going forward I can see him playing wide left of a three. Mark Kitching has the qualties on paper but never brings it together and has too many fuck ups and Ryan Johnson isn't good enough on the ball when we need to build the play.
