Yeah, Green is solid enough for Grimsby. Certainly a better striker than their position in the last couple of seasons. He's probably in that second tier of L2 strikers nowadays behind your Stockley, Doidge, Akinde, Norwood etc types.

Even when he's not scoring, he'll still contribute. His hold-up play improved in his time here, he'll run the channels well, works hard and will no doubt chip in with 10-12 goals or so like he did here.

He didn't score for something like 15 or 16 games here in the middle of last season but Cowley didn't once drop him for Palmer because he was still doing his work for the team.

It's an okay signing, straight replacement for Thomas who I think is the better player but was always one foot out the door, so we should see a lot more out of Green in comparison. 2 years is a little surprising but I'm relatively content.
Thomas is probably better when he can be arsed and hasn't decided he's off in Feb. Green is a top pro though from what I gather and I'd rather have that. I think the difference in goal return will be negligible. I'm pleased with that signing but I hope we haven't broken the bank in terms of wages for it. We still need a target man of some sort and someone who can get the ball out wide and in front of the likes of Vernam and Cook to run onto.

Is that the standard we've got to where people should be happy with their striker "chipping in with 10-12 goals"? I'd be expecting double that from a half decent centre forward!

Even our back up striker got 11 last season and we were tripe. Though to be fair that was 2 more than our lead forward. I've no idea if I've just contradicted myself or not now, and I'm too far in to backtrack.

Our back-up strikers got 3 between them last season (or are we still this season?!) - Green 2, Rhead 1!

Jamie Devitt has started following our gaffer on Twitter so could be something in him coming to us. Is he any good? Remember he used to play for Morecambe.

But we are shite going forward, so a striker who can get 10-12 is a step in the right direction.

I'll take Green, but he's the wrong side of 30 now, and we still need better if we are going to push on.

Though according to Green, the manager said we are going for it this season, so guess we will see who else comes in.

It's a solid first signing, but a long way to go before we can consider having a side pushing the play offs.

Luckily I mainly just lurk on Twitter but always seeing fans asking about what's he saying because they've been blocked. Seems a bit precious.

He predicted Adams to join Salford or Plymouth, an hour later he joined Northampton. I laughed at his tweet and got blocked.. very precious. Then again he works for The Sun.

Green will get closer to 20 than 10 if he’s the main man for a club I reckon so it’s a good signing.

Still a bit of a legend for Mansfield, I’m glad he’s signed for a club where he’s going to be in all likelihood the #1 striker. One thing only Mansfield and Lincoln fans realise about Green is how good his overall play is, he’s so much more than a goal scorer.

The only downside is he joined a club that had a fan base that once thought Liam Hearn was a better player :bl::lol:

Blocked me when I pulled him up on several Wednesday rumours he had dismissed, Gary Hooper signing being one....

I've been watching Colchester United for 21 seasons now, and in all that time only once have we had a striker hit 20 goals in a season (Jamie Cureton won the Championship golden boot with 24 in 2007).

Our average leading goalscorer in that time though has only scored 14.

I'd rather have two strikers on 10-12ish than one on 20-25. Plus, while goals are indeed important for some strikers they're not the be all and end all for a lot. You expect double 10-12 from any half decent striker? Do you how many achieved that last season in this divison?

We've not had a striker as good as Hearn in well over 10 years and we've had some pretty good ones. It will sadly never be a debate that can be truly answered thanks to his injuries but maybe this will be the season where Green finally puts it to bed. Give us 25-30 goals to send us up and I'll be convinced!

Green broke his leg or something drastic after he left us to join Birmingham to be fair.

Didn't know that in fairness. No denying both were very talented and far, far too good for non league.

I think Green will suit us as we've missed a proper work horse upfront, only player we have like that is Harry Cardwell who is nowhere near good enough. Maybe he'll improve having a senior player in the same vein to work with. Also a 10-12 goal return isn't terrible as long as there are goals coming from elsewhere which we still need to address. We need some major signings in the creativity role.

Do you think Hearn at the top of his game was clearly better than Bogle or Podge, then? Not sure if I'd go along with that. Podge was far too clever for the fifth tier and was often miles better than anyone else on the pitch. Hearn was probably more exciting clinical and when he was on one of his great streaks but I'd say Podge was a better footballer all round. And Bogle had a better half a season than Podge has ever had in this division so deserves to be in the equation. Then there's Connell of course. I don't think any one of those four was obviously the best and we could argue the toss for all of them all day. They were all better than Matt Green up until today though of course.

I think Hearn was better than Connell and Amond, not sure on Bogle. Bogle was far better once we made it to lge 2 than he was in the conference.

Unfortunately we will never know how good Hearn could have been because of his injuries. But he was still better than Green, not even debatable!!

Typical Conker to bring it up again, prepare for several pages of the same arguments over and over again, sorry lge 2 forum :woot:

Club officials not leaking anything this season. There appears to be no rumours our end whatsoever, which is making for an incredibly boring pre-season.

Ched Evans to sign by Friday.

Obviously that’s not true, but it sent me warm and fuzzy inside just typing it.

Think Hearn was was better than Amond personally, even though Amond got more goals - Hearn was someone who could get you out of your seat. Was also far more skilful than the other 3 and think he’d have been a top League 1 striker had he not been injured. Hard to say with Bogle, as like you said, his good spell was in League 2 and was undoubtedly a ‘spell’.

Bogle has more potential than Hearn had because he's a lot bigger and more powerful which are two great traits to have if you want to play as high as the Premier League. Just think he made the jump too far and too soon. Hearn was insanely good with the ball though, he used to embarrass defences with just one or two touches. I'd say Podge was the best finisher of the lot by a decent margin and Connell was a budget version of him. We've been blessed with some great strikers this past decade so it says a lot to rank Hearn as the best, but I'd do so all day long.

Yeah I’d agree with that, Hearn-Amond-Bogle-Connell for me.

Yeah, I know how many. It was more of a rhetorical question to highlight my point that it was hardly any mate.

No problem, it's interesting reading though comparing those who played a lot of games with those who didn't and the %'s of those shots on target against those converted.
Pleased that our Andy Williams does well against the stats because I do rate him as a goal scorer. He just needs to be given more game time.

Well I’ll tell you what’s more ridiculous than suggesting Green is better, and that’s that it’s ‘not even debatable’

Green played at a higher level before and after Hearn injury, shit not a fact to spoil the party Mr.Lukashenko :D
