I was wondering, when was the last time a L2 club signed a player who had previously done well for another L2 club and who didn't end up being a let down for their new club?

This season we've seen players like Luke Armstrong, Paddy Madden and just about every player MK Dons and Gillingham have signed end up being flops or just getting nowhere near to the standards they were signed for.

Shame to hear Madden's not really done it for Chesterfield.

But from our released summer list Sarcevic and Croasdale seem to be doing well at Play Off clubs. Hippolyte seems to contribute to Wimbledon too.

If the season ended today Croasdale would have my player of the season vote. Held our midfield together when everyone else was out injured.

I think it's a tad harsh to call Madden a flop, although he is edging towards that territory. He's been mostly injured in his time here, I think I could count on one hand the amount of games he's started. He's back for now and I keep expecting him score a few and spark to life. The minutes he has played he's cut a very isolated figure up front and we've not got much into him at all. If he doesn't bag a few in the coming weeks I might I lean towards getting annoyed with the signing. He'll get a start on Saturday I think and will hopefully show what he can do.

Actually he could, we had the same situation with Ben Whiteman, he signed a new contract with us to ensure we got a fee for him, a thank you if you like from him to the club. I still find it amusing that fans of lower league clubs assume that because a player signs a new contract it means their value goes up. All it means is you don’t have to sell them it doesn’t mean other clubs will pay vast amounts for them. Clubs will just contact the agent who will turn the players head and push a deal through regardless of how much you think they are worth.
Well hang on… why would he need to do that when he was contracted until 2026 anyway?

It’s amusing that you think that type of thing is going to happen with Dobra, when he’s just signed an extension to his deal… why would he do that if he was then going to start being a dickhead behind the scenes forcing moves through etc… when he could have just refused a new deal and saved a load of hassle for himself, whilst also keeping the ball more in his court?
Think about what you’re saying fella because it’s not making sense.

Also on your other point about value of player not being affected by length of contract… absolutely miles off it with that statement. If a player has 6 months left and a club comes in with a bid that gets rejected because the selling club thinks his value is X, then the buying club can just go and agree a contract through agents with the player and then just sit tight & wait for his contract to expire before taking them on a free in the summer (we all know it happens). Therefore the selling club will have to reluctantly reduce their asking price if they want to get any type of fee for them, thus reducing the value. But in a situation where a player has 2 years left, like Dobra will in the summer, that gives the selling club far more power to demand the type of fee they want. Mad that I’ve actually had to explain that.

Regardless as to whether he goes or not, as covered above by spireite, what it means is we’re just in a stronger position to negotiate a higher fee now than we were.

But, he wouldn’t have signed it if he didn’t have every intention of staying put for the foreseeable would he.
I suspect there's a release clause in there.

Think he’s looked absolutely wank tbh mate. Not been as disappointed with a signing as I have him in a long, long time. Still time to turn it around of course, he’s got very good pedigree and clearly a good player from the career he’s had, but he’s not looking like that player for us. 3rd choice striker when they’re all fit for me.

Yea I'm not sure about that. He hasn't been missing sitters left and right, we just haven't been feeding him many (any?) chances and he's has limited opportunities. I've seen the odd flash of a brilliant finish or touch to see why he's bagged so many in his time. To be fair his opportunities might be cut even more with Grigg back on the grass, just as he's looking to get match fitness.

Of course last six months, they are free to talk to other clubs however whether is 18 months or 3 years it makes no difference the only thing that will have happened is what others have stated that his release clause will have been renegotiated. Your very defensive it’s as if everybody is saying he’s shit

Not sure if he counts as I'm not sure exactly how well he did for Swindon but George McEachran has been superb for us. One of the best midfielders in the division this season.

How's the gaffer getting on mate? Last I'd heard he'd taken several bits of my advice on board? Grimsby fans can't be disappointed with the table, keep yourself in and around the play-offs with 6-8 game to go and it's anyone's really. You'd have taken that at the start of the season.

Now Sarce is fit and playing in a midfield three, he's been class.

Keeps us ticking over and his vision and positioning is first class.

3 goals and 4 assists - which have all bar one come since December 29th which coincides with him being fit.

Yep, definitely would have taken that at the start of the season mate. We're getting better as the season goes on and mood in the camp seems to be very good. Artell doing a great job. Confidence seems to have been restored among the majority of the fanbase too. The pressure is almost off this season with us doing better than expected but the further we go into it, the more I'm starting to think we might actually snag one of those playoff spots especially when those around us seem to be dipping in form.

He’s looked good in short spells but he has been a disappointment tbh. Only 1 goal I think & that was a pen. Had couple of injuries so not really got going. Imagine Grigg will be first choice once back & we only play with 1 up front so Madden may not feature much then. I know he can play the 10 role but we’ve got plenty of others who can too. Shame as he’s always been good against us & iirc has scored against us alot too.

It's hardly much better but I think he's scored 3. The finishes against County and Bromley I thought was a glimpse through the window of what we could have.
