Loan of Smith would have been nice but really of limited value for the remainder of this season given he hasn't played much recently and behind a striker in priority. A permanent would be altogether different and a great addition and I wonder if we offered on that basis.

I initially thought us being interested in a Tony Forde was a spoof. We don't desperately need him now, far from it, but on the basis of building for next season his apparent versatility would make him a good acquisition.
I’ll nail my views to the mast and say I’m not bothered about Smith. Not convinced he was on our radar anyway but will know more tomorrow.

Our data led approach is that any permanent signing must, in theory, be able to play in League One. We don’t want to sign players with a League 2 ceiling. Not convinced, by what I am told about Smith’s spell at Cheltenham from several sources, that he would be comfortable in League One. He was great in the NL

Yes, we have to get there first, but if our strategy is to build and sign players who should be comfortable at the next level then, personally, I can get on board with that.

Whether the data and judgement is right is anybody’s guess of course

We’ve signed Keenan Patten from Barry Town, midfielder. Fair play to Huw Jenkins. He’s assembling a competitive squad in preparation for non-league football next year.

I think it's the right way to go. A lot of teams will just recruit for the here and now, to get out of the division, without thinking long term. The trouble with that strategy is that league 2 is often a ceiling for a lot of them, so you end up having to replace a lot. Of course, you can only replace so many at a time, meaning your team isn't good enough for the level above and you probably only get 1 or 2 seasons in the league above before the substandard squad comes back down.

In theory your method should mean that you have plenty of league 1 (or potential league 1 players) already set, so you've got the opportunity to tweak round the edges and make it into a squad that can actually compete rather than making wholesale changes.

They could turn out to be great but pretty much all the youngsters we've signed (apart from Arblaster who's just unbelievable) are either very inconsistent or just not ready for men's football. You'd think in your position, you'd sign a bit of experience and knowhow. Connor Grant could be an option for you...he's a scouser who came highly rated from Plymouth. He's just been crap here but perhaps a change of scenery will do him good. Three seasons ago , we went to Tranmere who I think were above us in the table at the time and got a draw. They looked a pretty strong side. What on earth has happened since? Seems like the powers that be have resigned themselves to relegation.
Wheatley who we've signed from United has that look about him so far looks like a kid trying to play with men.

Us and Tranmere being linked with Anthony Forde who has just left Wrexham.

If I get chance, I'll do a full update.

Yep, very encouraging to not have panic bought and so refreshing to not really be in any dire need for anyone either. The squad is by no means perfect or even quite ready to mount a challenge but it will do for now and if we've saved a few pennies for the summer then that's even better.

We were in for him by all accounts mate. Classic Gillingham though, get on the L2 forums and see who everyone is linked with then send out the taxis and double what they're being offered. Still, that one is a certified GOOD SIGNING.
I'd have Fordey back here class player when he played for us if he's anywhere like that now be a good signing for you.

As always depends what McKirdy they're getting. The one who had a great season at Swindon or the one for almost every other year of his career. Will be an "interesting" welcome he'll get when they come to VP.

I guess that's what Alan Buckley did in the non-data led world of 35 years ago. Brought in players comfortable with a playing style that would stand us well in one level higher and then a second step up - Rees, Gilbert, Childs. I admit was sceptical at the time, just adding Neil Woods to the squad after the first promotion, then we ripped PNE apart at Deepdale on the opening day and were never out of the promotion spots all season.

I'm convinced that season was a one off. As a complete tosser himself, he probably enjoyed playing with other tossers like the Williams and Egbo and that tosser of a manager.

That penalty miss was just magical. He even laughed in an ironic way. If I was a Swindon fan I'd have been fuming as he tried to hit top bins, whereas if he scores they go on to win.

Boy did they have a dislikeable bunch. It felt like karma really worked that day.

To be fair probably got some unfair stick as he never really got a look in. Never felt he was an Askey type of player and DC shoving him at left back last game of the season was an odd one!

That said his celebration in the first leg and the pigs thing didn’t help him in the semi and was dire in the second leg, although after his dive in the first leg and that image of him pleading innocence as Hall has him by the shirt is a classic, don’t think he was as keen to go close to Connor after that!

Interesting to see how he does there. Much as I dislike him and loved the karma in the second leg I am glad to see him fully recovered from his health scare and being able to carry on his career.
