The problem with ball playing goalkeepers at this level is that their ball playing skills aren't good enough to make up for all the times they get caught out and make comedy errors. Ederson or Manuel Neuer they ain't.
You lot saw how well it was implemented at Blundell Park on your first game up here and knew it had to be done, I suspect?
Gilks in at Bolton, 3rd choice and Goalkeeper Coach.
Anyone else think Gilks could still be one of the best keepers in this division given a run in a side?

Matty Foulds is training with us according to Echo. Released by Everton this summer who signed him from Bury when he was 18.

Absolutely. He was good with us before he got his injury. I would have liked to have seen him back at the Iron as 1st choice keeper. Would be difficult as a coach, as we have two goalkeeping coaches already - Musslewhite and Pressman.

He was very good for us in his short spell, the whole defence seemed to get a lift and more reassured by playing him.

Seems a waste for him to not even be on the bench, doesn't it? If we didn't have McKeown I'd be happy with him as first choice probably. Mind you, Sam Russell can still do a job for us when needed.

Scunny and Bradford fans...we’ve just signed Rory McArdle. Please tell me he’s good?!?
He may have been good with Bradford, but he wasn't with us. Very patchy. He is indecisive, flat-footed and slow, but can definitely head a ball. Likely to score one or two goals, but likewise, likely to cost you some. I think he will be effective against the poorer sides, but facing the better teams, I think he will struggle. He was expensive and we cannot afford him with our budget, as we plan to go with young 'uns. I don't think McArdle has much time left at league level and as your manager has said, he will need managing properly in terms of training and playing time.

Gilks will have probably been looking for a coaching job too. I doubt he would have come to you either, if you couldn't have offered him a coaching position.

Yeah, fair point. If we didn't have Russell already it could have been on the cards perhaps given that he's no stranger to the area.

Yeah, I imagine at 38 the selling point for him was a fully fledged coaching position. He was the one that suggested Crellin for us so obviously doesn't see himself starting any more and we have our own young keeper who I'm sure we'll be wanting to see the field on occasion.

Good to know that he's more than good enough if needed still though.

Still think that is a place we need to improve.......us and Bury have had some good goalies down the years who we let go

Is this with a view to signing permanently or on loan? I’m not sure if his contract status at Everton but he was held in high regard at Bury youth and would be a fantastic signing. He’s at the right age to start making some league appearances.

Would be on a free I believe as his contract with Everton ended earlier this Summer. Let’s see if he impresses in training!

Good to see Sam Russell still going, must be nearly 40 by now? Top player and top man as well.

Easily the most popular of the 16 different keepers we've had over the past 4 or 5 seasons (not counting Luke McGee and any other keeper we might still bring in this summer).

March 2009, Dale 3 Bantams 0 - possibly Buckley's best game for us. Was McCall manager then? He might be remembering... :)

Aye, he tore us a new one!

Injury prone but you can’t doubt his quality!

His first spell was more miss than hit....Parkinson played him out of position
Hill brought him back last season he played well in i think two games...then unfortunatly broke his leg.
Hope he gets a run of games

We’re quite well off for central defenders and Monthe doesn’t seem to have got his move, so would need to be good to get a deal.

2 signed this week. Rod McDonald and Josh Kayode.

Although we’ve announced 8, 6 of them were signed weeks ago.

Joe Mills signs for Northampton on a 2 year deal after rejecting our offer. Good signing for them, quality player.
