Sunderland have sold out at Portsmouth as well today. I know they're a huge club even at championship level but I'd underestimated their away support, probably because of last season.

And I agree, great support from Bradford given their position and time of year.

I don't agree with this whole time of year thing. I know Christmas is expensive but it's also when most people get time off work and get chance to go to the football so I'd expect decent crowds.

Sunderland’s home crowds in the prem were always boosted by thousands of free tickets, hence the 40k+ averages. Without the free tickets being given out they would have been averaging 33-34k whilst struggling in the prem which is still good. In the prem they also used to take the lowest possible away allocation majority of the time. Still not to be sniffed at with the distances they have to travel. Last season their home crowds were as low as 20k at times, although they used to announce much higher attendance figures. The 27k average last season is not accurate. They averaged 1700 on the road. This season they are doing well and have fresh optimism, hence their away support has been top draw, and they are expecting 45k paying punters on Boxing Day, which is superb. Boxing Day is always well attended. We had a sell out crowd v Burton whilst struggling two year ago. Like most clubs, their numbers are consistent with their form and how they are doing. Wednesday nowadays and especially Leeds are far more consistent on the road in terms of numbers. Both of those clubs also pay a lot more at home too. When things are going well, Sunderland’s away support is one of the best without doubt.

Any idea on the Accrington following?

Looked like there could have been 100 or so which I think would be impressive. That is a long old journey.

So we’ve sold less than 700 for our trip to Scunny on Boxing Day. Usually we sell 1000s for most trips, but the location is hardly appealing.

When is common sense going to prevail and it becomes a day for derbies?

Sad. When I lived in England Boxing Day was such a special football day. One of the best.

Tradition. Was always fun beating Watford 1-0.

I suppose it wasn’t always about derbies in the good ol’ days. Back in the 50s there used to be back to back games on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The last of which I believe for Luton was against Manchester United. I don’t think our record in the 50s was any better than what it is now against them!

Reading an article yesterday that stated that it was the clubs who didn't want derbies on Bank Holidays, as they were guaranteed bigger gates whenever they were played.
Great, but no good for the away fans, hence the poor sales for our game, which will be about 160 miles from Luton.

In advance...

Not sure on the numbers but looked about 700-800, low by our standards but Christmas & in relegation doesn’t help.

What do you actually think you would take if in the relegation zone in league one?
We were 17th in L1 in 2013/14 when we played them and took 1,312. Not sure why it’s relevant though, we’re on about Bristol Rovers, it’s the League One away support thread.

If they've taken 700, seems about right for a relegation threatened side, just wondered why you thought it was low, you wouldn't have more than 1k in identical circumstances I don't think, neither would we for that matter. On another note that crowd at Sunderland is superb. 46k in league one is unreal.

Poor following, boxing day and it’s an hour and a half up the road. We played them when we were a few positions away from where Rovers are and had 1,312 san I said so I disagree with you on both us and Sheffield Utd.

Yeah ridiculous crowd that, 2,900 Bradford I read as well which is an outstanding effort. I hope Sunderland come back up for the weekend away next year.
