Yeah I have to say I am sick of seeing opposition fans lauding us as the ‘best team we’ve played this season’ or the ‘most impressive league 1 side in recent years’ etc and then watching us a week later have 25 shots, scoring just the once or and throwing away a couple of points when the other side inevitably equalises late.Said on our forum (not Owlstalk) you remind me of us last season, control games but fail to put games away and drop points, we dropped 21 points last season.
We have the players to play the pretty stuff but we also have experienced heads who can grind wins out, battle etc. It sometimes isn't pretty but give me 3 points over plaudits.
The first ten minutes Saturday will be important, we let Plymouth have possession but we were more incisive when we got it and took an early lead which we rarely looked like relinquishing.
We need to weather your storm, midfield will be some battle, just hoping Keogh starts given what your fans are saying, Chaplin is my main concern mind.
Mental that we've conceded only 7 away in 13 with over half coming in 2 games.
We’ve got the players, we’ve got the skill. It’s a better set of players than most of the last ten years (including our playoff championship side) but the winning mentality to see games out is what is missing. You saw the way we crumbled at your place. We were absolutely the better side that day and yet a draw was a fair result as we crumbled as soon as you scored the goal to get you back in the game. And yes that equaliser a few minutes later was miles offside but it masked the fact that we had from nowhere gone from controlling a game and looking professional away from home to panicking like headless chicken and scrambling to clear our lines. Our passing, classy football was gone and we were just praying for the best. Same thing happened at Charlton when they scored twice in injury time. Same thing at home to Cheltenham when they too scored in the 96th minute. Same thing against Plymouth. All of these games we were the better team but I came away from it thinking that a draw was fair from the way we let them back in. It’s our problem.
When we’re good, we really are good. But mentally we are shot if we let teams hang around in games rather than killing them off when we could and should.
That goals conceded stay away from home is very impressive though. Chaplin is indeed the key for us. His ability to pass the ball in behind defences is magic. He’s a quality finisher as well. Watch out for Leif Davis at left back. Paid a million for him but he will be sold for 5m in the summer if we don’t go up. He’s already our most valuable asset and he’s only been here half a season. Can easily see why he played 41 games for bournemouth last year when they won the championship.
1-1 Saturday with yous scoring late and me having another 2 hour train journey back to Essex with the hump.
