That’s the frustrating thing with FGR, they are capable of playing good football as shown against us at “that POF“, and again for those final 15 minutes at Prenton this season. But why all the totally over the top shithousery other times?

Because it's actually funny af to annoy everyone. Ebou Adams is great at it, especially against Orient.

I remember some amazing time wasting from us in the past, Reece Styche and James Norwood once kept the ball around the corner flag for the whole 5 minutes of injury time at Kiddy, doing little flicks and stuff. One of their players was so annoyed he sat down and gave up in protest. And Sam Russell once pretended he couldn't find the ball to take a goal kick at Telford, knowing full well he'd hid it behind an advertising board behind the goal, pretending to look everywhere (apart from there) as their fans went mad. Good times.

Shithousery is a vital tactic when done well and I hope whoever comes in next turns it up to the max. ;)

Aye, just speaking generally I've got no problem with it. Prior to DC coming to Vale we had a series of managers like Page, Aspin and Askey who were very puritanical about that sort of stuff and to our cost we didn't engage in those darker arts ourselves. Since DC has come in we've used almost every tactic in the book when it comes to killing the clock and I'm all for it. I personally would draw the line at the Westley timeout but even Stevenage don't do that any more.

As mentioned before - you have shithouser general at Vale with Scott Brown. Remember in our first season back in the Football League when he almost single-handedly kept us up he absolutely bollocked a ball-boy who gave him a ball back far too quickly when we were leading 1-0 late in a game.

Wycombe Wanderers (now there's a long, and indeeed pretty successful managerial post-holder) over the years put any of the current league two teams entirely in the shade with that stuff.

I do agree we can do far too much of it at times - falling like dominos sometimes. To the degree of being embarrassing, or worse. It's a fine line between shithousery and skilful game management. The trick is knowing the difference

I actually felt Forest Green had gone too far the other way in their trip to Birkenhead this season. No crocking one of our players, wasting hours on a throw-in and free-kick or rolling around endlessly. Perhaps that's where Cooper went wrong or are we going to get a double dose in Gloucestershire a few weeks hence..?

Think the most egregious shithousery have seen this season was when we were at Scunny and I think close to half time we had a breakaway and their player did the most blatant foul knowing full well he was going to pick up a booking to stop us. On the one hand I was thinking 'you cheating bastard' while also quite admiring it at the same time and wishing we would do that.

It could have been argued it was wasted doing it on us as we would likely have fluffed it of our accord but never mind.

The talk of FGR possibly going for a female manager reminds me that one of the candidates for our vacancy after Evatt left was female and impressed the chairman. I'm not 100% sure who it was without checking - but i think it was Hope Powell. Dale Vince mentioned both female and BAME candidates and Hope would come under both and would no doubt do a great job given the chance,

Over 70 applications for vacant FGR manager's job is clear indication that it is seen as a prestigious position.
I don't think chairman Dale Vince interferes with team selections which is a bonus and he appears to give his managers a decent run.
However that might be an illusion. Vince got rid of past two managers after a few bad results despite on both occasions FGR were in a play-off position with few games left of season.
Remember he got rid of Ady Pennock prior to last match of season and after he had secured a place for FGR in promotion play-offs
In the decade he has been chairman FGR have had nothing but continuing successes, from being at point of going out of business to becoming established EFL club.
Perhaps his reputation might be otherwise if he had some bad luck or made a dodgy appointment.

Is there an EFL rule where a certain number of BAME candidates must be interviewed should they apply? I assume that goes for female candidates too.

Beware of 'Vince talk' - he has a reputation of wrong footing everybody around him.
Remember when there was a big publicity campaign to rename The New Lawn with a list of suggested names. It was eventually called Innocent New Lawn, a name not on list.

Listening to his interviews with media and reading between the lines it seems as if he has a candidate in mind but is waiting to see if a better candidate emerges.
Lat time the job opportunity occurred, Vince appointed a temporary manager but already had Mark Cooper lined up to take over. I suspect it might be same this time around.

i agree,

the dumb innocent look on his face when he's just been told by the ref to hurry up whilst he's ran off to the side of the pitch to personally collect a ball from a ball boy is hilarious.

and the classic "i don't know where to take this set piece from ref, here? how about here? is here okay?" just anywhere in line with the linesman will do scotty.

im amazed he doesn't get booked most in every game we go in front

He's awesome. Catches every cross known to man in the last 5 mins of a game as well, when he spends the first 85 mins flapping at everything.

God I miss Scott Brown!!

Hope Powell has been linked with quite a few jobs down the years, it would be interesting to see her get a chance.

Or if a sub is made when we have a goal kick or an injury he wont place the ball until after the event and referee asks him to...

Thankfully DC has made us more streetwise and a bit more shithousy after the likes of Aspin banning us crowding referees etc!

Hope Powell can be seen most weekends at Crawley. She is currently employed as manager of Brighton & Hove women's team who play their home games at our stadium.

I am conflicted with regard to her. It would be good to see a woman in charge of a professional men's team but I'm not altogether sure how good Powell is.

He does love Cheltenham.

I'll never forgive Gary Johnson for thinking signing Jon Flatt on loan from Wolves was a better deal than paying the £5k Wycombe wanted for him. I'm steadfast in my belief that he's Cheltenham's best Football League goalkeeper. And I include Jack Butland in that.

Hope Powell isn’t really the pre-eminent female manager/coach in the country anymore. If there was to be a female manager to cross the divide to the football league id have thought it would be Emma Hayes who is the Chelsea coach.

She doesn’t fancy it though does she? Didn’t seem keen on the Wimbledon job.

Would be a great publicity stunt.

That’s the worry, don’t want a publicity stunt. Vince can do his publicity stunts away from the pitch, on it we need someone who can deliver results not column inches.

If a woman is genuinely the best applicant we get then by all means go for it, but the main thing is we get someone good.

She turned down Wimbledon saying it was an insult that it was considered a step up - I suspect it would've actually have been a drop in wages. Chelsea women's team spent more on transfers than most L1 and L2 teams last season, so she probably prefers getting paid a fortune for a very easy job than basically being a publicity stunt.

i agree - no disrespect to FGR, but for the Chelsea WSL boss it would be a backwards step - unless she just wants the notoriety of being the 1st female boss in the EFL - and i doubt she'd want to leave Chelsea just for that.

Yep probably a better gig at Chelsea than a football league side to be honest.

I don’t think it would be a “stunt” though, she’s a very good young coach, more experience than a few who get jobs at this level. If she wanted it I’d have thought she’d be pretty high on the list but agreed, she’s probably happy at Chelsea.

There are enough female pundits in football- mainly ex players like Alex Scott and Sue Smith. Maybe time one of them made the step up?
