I think we need to look at the players we've got, decide how we need to play to get the best out of those players and then choose a manager to suit.

Unpopular opinion I think, as the general consensus among fans and pundits is that would be putting the cart before the horse, that the manager is number one and the rest of the club has to adapt to him, that good manager will get the best out of any group of players and good players can adjust to any system they're asked to perform but I think it would do us good to break with the tradition of thinking that way.

The criticism of Beech was that he had no alternative when the playing squad changed. He did well with a squad last season he'd assembled almost entirely on his own. This season things didn't go his way in the transfer market and it was soon clear that players like Zach Clough and Tristan Abrahams aren't suited to 'Beech ball', or at least not without ball-winning attack-minded players around them like Kayode, Zanzala and Patrick, and not without defenders who could step up and play clever passes that aren't just long-balls; but continuing to try and play Beech ball just ended with us playing aimless long-ball. It wasn't working and you get the usual criticisms of 'no plan B'. Beech isn't the first League Two manager to be criticised for having no plan B and won't be the last.

I would wager, there isn't a single manager down here who has a genuine plan B, only the very best can switch between different playing systems and philosophies and not suffer a dip in form as a result (although some of the very best are even more one-dimensional than the managers down here because they are always able to assemble the right squad). Setting up a team is more complicated than just getting the system down on paper, you also have to know how to coach that system into the players, and how to adjust the finer points of the system to react to things in a match.

Most managers have a system. If any manager has achieved success in the lower leagues then it's because they're good at playing within their system and cruicially were able to build a squad who suit that system. Most managers (particularly those who have shown that they can get a team in good form) are perfectly competent as long as they can play a system they know. Few managers know many systems, few managers can take a randomly assembled squad and get them playing a system though there are many managers whose skill lies not in playing a system well, but in keeping such a random group of players from losing too many games; those are the ones who can keep a troubled team from getting relegated but not much else).

Often this is why senior players can do well in short periods when placed in caretaker charge, because they along with their team-mates know what system they should play... they just don't have the experience to coach it further and react to changes to make it sustainable usually.

We need to loook at who we've got in the building already, what system would suit them, and then go out and find a manager who can excel with such a system. Unfortunately this would require a lot of footballing knowledge and analysis from the person who has to go and choose a manager, and that person for us is David Holdsworth... but who knows, maybe he'll prove his worth.
Holdsworth will probably try and appoint himself.

Don't think he actually wants to manage again after his spell with you lot and Mansfield, but he has stepped in as assistant on occasion and no doubt there will be suggestions from our board, keen to take the cheap option. The life of a DoF seems to suit him though and he's pally with the man who may or may not be actually running the club so can't see him wanting to leave that behind for a position he's more likely to be sacked from.

‘Who in their right mind would want to manage Carlisle?’

I would say most out of work managers for one. A jobs a job, location isn’t a major issue most managers/players in this league aren’t locals it’s part of pro football to move around for work. Being third bottom won’t worry many, tables still tight and can only really go upwards barring a disaster and so easy to bank some credit. Don’t get the impression those running the club are a lot worse then your average, definitely not basket cases like Scunthorpe or Oldham. Decent sized support as well.

Pretty sure they’ll get some decent applicants.

Yeah there’s only a finite number of jobs available so would imagine there’ll be plenty of decent applicants. Looking at that Carlisle squad there’s plenty to work with. Clough and Guy to name just two are really good players for this level and if can figure out a way get the best from them then it shouldn’t take that much to turn them round.

This exactly.
We have some good players so it’s not needing a huge rebuild, just someone to get something out of what we’ve got before filling a few gaps in January.

He knew what was going on. Joined, signed a contract and then walked after a month. Now trying to get the contract paid up citing constructive dismissal. Not sure if he can take another job until that is ruled on. He can fucking rot.
Presume he would drop his claim if offered another job

I'd certainly be looking at Pete Wild at FC Halifax. Done a cracking job at The Shay with limited resources.

Think a heavy defeat tonight could see Neil Cox sacked.

Our current form is even worse than I thought, we have 2 wins in 31 games I thought it was 29 games. The fact he's survived that is surprising.

I do feel sorry for him, he's been dealt a terrible hand. Smallest budget in the FL, worst squad in the FL. However, his tactics leave a lot to be desired and the football we play is shocking. Sacking him does seem pointless though as nobody will save us.

James Rowberry is the new County manager according to the local rag. An unknown quantity like Flynn although Flynn had a successful playing career behind him. Best of luck to him (please don’t be Anthony Hudson mk 2).

Dangerous move that by County. Could be a success, clearly, but got disaster written all over it.

I'll take Rowberry as new boss. Six years experience as Newport County youth Coach and seven years as Cardiff City assistant Manager.

We're 100% not appointing someone where we'd have to pay compensation
Not that his word is trustworthy, but Holdsworth did tell BBC last week that they’d be willing to pay compensation if necessary to get the right man.

Rumours have appeared that John McGreal has ruled himself out of the Carlisle job. No quote from him or anything like that but it's been reported in the media that he has.

Shefki Kuqi has entered the running according to bookies, not sure why, he doesn't have a lot of managerial experience. No idea where such rumours come from, it's not the first time he's been linked with the job even, way back when Greg Abbott was sacked I remember a rumour going round that he was one of the contenders.

I now have this horrible feeling we’ll appoint Skelton if we win on Saturday.

I almost don’t want us to win because of It!

Keith Hill appears to be the new bookies favourite.

Tranmere fans? Reremnart Robshep Huntsman94

Carlisle fans on Facebook seem to believe this would be an excellent appointment, and before his spell with you lot I would have agreed... but he was pretty despised there, can you elaborate?

It started well under Hill, but he took over a team that had just won 5 games on the bounce, so he didn't really have to change anything. It was when he started to change things that it went wrong.

The football was pretty dire if i remember correctly, he was arrogant to the media, and seemed to go into every interview with a new quote to piss off the fans.

I wouldn't want him if i was a Carlisle fan, but as you mention his record elsewhere is quite good. Does strike me as the kind of manager on his way down though, living off past success.

Doesn't respond well to criticism. He didn't have crowds to contend with at us and despite claiming not to read social media knew a lot of what it said. His biggest achievement was creating a toxic atmosphere in an empty stadium.

Think he would be on for a better start with Carlisle simply because his Bolton roots aren’t as much of an issue. It started well as others have said but that was largely due to riding the wave that had been created by Dawesy and Parky.

He’s an old school manager that won’t set the world on fire but will demand an extremely high work rate and can grind out results. But when things aren’t going his way then it could start to get ugly as it did at our place when he turned on the fans. From then on there was only ever going to be one outcome.

He told us he was going to give us attractive attacking football and did the complete opposite. He then blamed us for not being happy that he didn't do it. His job at Bolton was to do the best he could with little resources. He had no restrictions at Tranmere apart from having no fans present. His failure was his fault and his attitude was disgraceful.

Agree with most of what's been said about Keith Hill by other Rovers posters, though unsure how big a part his Bolton origins played in his downfall.

However, I would have concerns about him returning to management at present, as he was showing signs of mental health issues during his time with us and he'd alluded to those in an interview between managing notlob and Rovers. If he's still not resolved those then for his own health returning to management may not be a good thing.

I think Keith Hill is generally a good manager, his record speaks for itself. I thought we played some very decent stuff through November to February last season. His (the clubs) transfer dealings in January turned out to be very poor which ultimately cost us. We looked nailed on to go up last season and then Vaughan got injured, other key players appeared to down tools and it didn’t look like we were going to score again.
Depends what Carlisle fans want really? Would be good enough to steer Carlisle away from the wrong end of the table in my opinion.

One always wonders if at his age and medical history whether his heart was fully involved in 24/7 all consuming job?
I wish him well wherever he goes.

Bbcrc were initially quick to suggest fans were getting overexcited and jumping up conclusions about simmo returning. But then (and I didn't hear this) apparently Lummy has met up with him.

Probably means he's signing... For the bbc

Some carlisle fans getting a bit excited at the possibility of Hill being our next manager as if he's finally the person to come in and stop us playing long ball.
