New kits and bucket hats available tomorrow but still no news on a head coach!

I think we are announcing our head coach today. Strong rumours that we're appointing Scott Lindsey who was Garner's assistant last season. Clearly this hasn't gone down well that we've taken so long just to give the assistant the job. Still only a rumour but the more neurotic of our fan base are not taking this well.

Edit - heard from a reliable source that this is happening. Oh well!

Very popular at our place and the better half of the duo with Cooper. Think he did all right in the non-league job he took after returning from some time out due to bereavement.

The obvious concern is that at 50 he hasn't had a league managerial gig. I will of course give him a chance and secretly hope that he was the brains behind our success last season and that Charlton will stink under Garner!

He is owed some better luck and success after what happened with his wife, and I hope he gets both with Swindon. We deteriorated when he left.

Seems to me . You had an alternative ( No 1 ) target that has'nt materialised.

Rumours were that Andrew Crofts was our No1 target but Brighton gave him more money to stay. There were potentially others, which we may, or may not find out about. We should hopefully be put out of our misery later this afternoon.

I thought you would have easily got a decent manager. In my book Swindon must be one of the most sought after jobs in the 4th Div.

I was told a few weeks back that you approached our board about Wellens and compensation. Not sure how true this was though as the person who told him has a 50/50 record, not the usual person who gets the gossip.

But of course it was quickly knocked back, he’s on a long term deal here so wouldn’t have been cheap either.

Yeah I'd heard we wanted Wellens also but not sure how hard we tried, as you say compo would have been significant.

Predictable meltdown from many fans and I can see why. Cheap option, process has been drawn out when you consider Lindsey was already here, not been 'the man' at anything close to a football league club before. I get it.

Personally - while being underwhelmed it's a bit of continuity from last season when we weren't far away and we can now focus on bringing in players. Full backing from me as with every manager (except Paul Hart the dislikable dinosaur).

Only time will tell with this appointment, happy to give him a chance given what we almost achieved last season.

As with all appointments it's all we can really do. I completely understand the reservations around taking so long to basically promote the assistant and that this is really his first proper managerial role (don't really count Chatham Town) but I can see what the club are trying to do re the continuity and it's positive that he seemed to be the brains behind the Cooper/Lindsey team at FGR and perhaps was the same last season under Garner. I really really hope it works because if we start the season badly things are going to get toxic with our fanbase, which is impatient at the best of times!

The thing is his coaching ability is proven at this level I would say, and listening to him talk tactics he’s very clued up and knowledgable. So in which case the question would be does he have the right character to be the no.1 as a lot of good coaches struggle to make that transition, having to make the hard decisions, not being the good guy/players mate etc.

On that basis the fact he did well as manager at Chatham is a good sign/possibly more relevant then it might usually be?

Many fans thought the same when we ( Sutton) appointed Matt Gray!

Also the same when we gave the job full time to Under 18’s coach Jon Brady. Turned out to be probably our best appointment since Wilder.

I thought Matt Gray would do well for Sutton but not to the extent of getting you promoted. Be honest. That exceeded all expectations.

From chatting to him when he was at Crawley he always seemed to have a good head on his shoulders...and a Guiness in his hand.

Bump.

Disastrous decision to keep Rowberry on after the pathetic collapse last season :hb:. 7 home defeats and counting. It’s not just the losing it’s the manner of the losing. Nothing has changed at all, it’s like 11 strangers on the pitch.

The guy isn’t up to it, get rid.

Stockdale gone from Rochdale already. Can't say I'm surprised though, they were horrific first game of the season and were only heading for non league by the looks of it.

Unusually swift decision from Dale, there. Should pay off for them.

Does this count as a win? Feels like it.
No idea who we end up with. I wanted us to bin off Stockdale for Pete Wild last year. Barrow's gain.
I would hope we go for someone with league two experience and not another ex academy manager or a cheap hire from within.
Graham Alexander with Rochdale lad Chris Lucketti as assistant seems the best idea so far.

Dale played some great stuff against us home and away last year. I couldn't understand their league position.

I don't know about v Steveange but in previous games they seem to have the chances but not score then get hit with a sucker punch.
