With Calderwood and Hurst gone, every single one of the bottom 11 sides has now changed manager.
From the outside looking in, this seems like it's totally on the manager. No, not the injuries or the bad luck in some games.

But in that he wants to sign more players when by my count, you have 25+ contracted professionals, plus a few more in on loan. He wants more players yet won't play the likes of Ryan Colclough, who would be one of the best players in the league if the manager played him. So he has an iffy attitude, deal with it. Rather use him and have him contribute than alienate him to prove a point. Plus he signed Butler in the summer to probably not cheap wages and now he's sat on your bench.

I mean, you aren't going down barring an incredible turn of events. So write the season off, trim the squad down, get rid of who you can and then build for next season. Seems daft to try and force in more quick fixes for no long term benefit.

The players we have on the books simply aren't good enough though, we signed and overpaid a lot of players under previous managers and can't get rid as nobody wants them. Butler was a poor signing, Hurst got that wrong.

I'm not really sure where we go from here. Will probably appoint our former manager Russ Wilcox until the end of the year.

To expand further, what has Calderwood ever done to deserve the tag of a 'good manager'? He took Forest up when everybody knows the playing budget of a big club like that down in L1 will dwarf that of nearly everybody else, bar possibly, one or two clubs at the most.

As for his time at Northampton, I did hear from a Cobblers fan that they did have a little bit of money behind them at the time ('a top 5 budget' were his exact words) so once more it all boils down to money. Further more, I have it on good authority that he only took over the U's after the board promised that they would back him with a better budget than the one that his predecessor had to work with.

I do agree with fellow U's fans about the current coaching set up at the club - it is clearly not working and needs to be scrapped asap. But that doesn't excuse the fact that Calderwood was the man in charge of the first team, and team selection, game plan and what have you was all down to him and not his assistants. As were the new players he signed in pre season.

To be fair its not easy to bounce back now, we've took into our third season to get back onto an upward trajectory and the likes of Chesterfield and Notts have suffered much worse. Crewe took a while to get back on the up to a lesser degree Swindon.

Seems clubs relegated are generally finding it hard to sort themselves out.

Our local radio presenter has suggested it is a sacking and not Hurst walking. That is ridiculous, we will never have managerial stablity.

Pep is slightly different in its his style of football and intensity that has given him huge credit.

It is always an interesting argument though as to what say Klopp would do with a lesser club etc. Is achieving loads of trophies with billion pound finances any more successful than someone regularly doing well with L1/2 clubs, for example John Rudge's tenure at Vale with little money.

I didn't say he was a poor manager either. I said it's hard to rate somebody like Pep when they've only ever managed at rich clubs with an open cheque book at the ready.

What makes managers good is how they coach/motivate players. Both Pep and Klopp improve players as well as getting them to run through brick walls for them.

How much money you spend is irrelevant, if you always get the best out of what you've got you could do it anywhere. Only difference would be what success looks like relatively speaking.

It would be great if they did an actual year long experiment where they put Klopp, Pep and Mourinho in charge of Morecambe, Macclesfield and Stevenage and put 3 lower league managers (insert your own) in charge of Man City, Liverpool and Man United to see how they perform with a vastly different budget and training facilities etc.

Surely Amazon Prime would buy that!

Agreed valefan16. It was before my time but everybody expected Cambridge to struggle in the old second division after winning promotion back in 1977. Everybody said we were far too small (and poor) to compete. John Docherty took over from Ron Atkinson and kept the club in the second division for six years. Now that's the sign of a good manager.

Going off RH interviews, it seems like Hurst felt like Swann moved the goal posts regarding wage budget/potential January incomings. That's surely been a factor in whatever has gone down here. If it's a sacking it is indeed ridiculous. If you're gonna be cutting your cloth accordingly like Swann seems to be suggested, you're looking at a decent stretch of time in L2 I reckon.

Also, I wonder if Chris Doig knows yet?

9th in a not so strong league is not that good is it? Especially with the kind of playing budget they must have. They've only picked up two wins in their last 12 games; a 1-0 home over Macc and a 4-3 win up at Mansfield courtesy of a 96th min winner.

Only a decent away record is keeping them in the top 10. Home form is not great and 13 goals in 15 league games is poor, and not acceptable given the club's promotion hopes.
