Alan Nixon saying Lee Turnbull is coming in as our new recruitment (says DoF actually) guy, ex Scunny, suggest maybe Hurst/Alexander?
Turnbull is a weird one, he left in summer due to cost-cutting measures and our chairman appointed his son as our chief scout/head of recruitment.

He was somewhat loved here as he was our chief scout for ages and brought in Billy Sharp, Gary Hooper etc. However, we have signed so many poor players in recent years which will link back to him.

Saying that, whether or not those players are actually poor remains to be seen. For example, he brought in Charlie Goode who was poor here but is now playing for Brentford in the Championship.

He doesn't really have any links with Hurst or Alexander, he was at the club before both of them.

You had to do it before you played us!

I seem to recall all the fans saying that recruitment wasn't great in the summer. If you have a dof surely he should get the boot not the coach?

Casey

No dof, just McCall who wanted a smaller squad through what was going to be to be a tough season. Injuries have absolutely crippled us, but when the same people make the same mistakes every single game, something has to give.

The contract extension tabled 3 weeks ago was simply the club saying we’re right behind McCall, but as always, results pending - sadly nothing changed. Timing may seem off, but do we trust McCall to make the right decisions during January, in what will prove to be the clubs more important transfer window in it’s history?

Lee Turnbull, who is expected to be our new DOF from next week, should have names already in place - given that’s his job. We now need to go again; someone who will not only keep us in the football league, but someone who will ensure that we’re challenging for promotion next season. We have £300,000 to spend in January, so I fully expect us to be stronger next year.

Feel for the bloke, don't like people losing their jobs at the end of the day and he seems a likeable guy, but the stats don't lie, management doesn't seem to be his trade.

Very mixed feelings about Dunn getting the boot - results weren't good enough, but so many individual mistakes have cost 'him' some wins. We haven't been hammered (yesterday was the closest and that was a collapse after going down to 10 men), and he's been unlucky with injuries.
My main worry now is that we go for a name who is just wanting a final pay day (Grayson was mentioned, probably in jest). Also, are the club going to sack the manager every time there's a bit of discontent?

I've heard we're keeping his assistant, Rob Kelly, which is strange as surely he's just as culpable? I expect he'll be given the top job as he fits the bill.

Not sure how I feel about Barrow sacking Dunn. Could be justified could be harsh. I'm inclined to think though that Barrow have underestimated the gulf in quality between NL and L2. I didn't get to watch a lot of the NL last year but the general consensus among the fans was that Harrogate were the strongest side even though they didn't win the title, with Barrow not that far off. Harrogate are currently in 17th place and Barrow are down in 21st and if that's not evidence of the quality required in order to be competitive in L2 then I don't know what is.

Underestimating the gulf in class is exactly why we needed to get someone in with experience of this League following Evatt's departure, and knew what's required to establish ourselves. Recruitment has been our major downfall as MT said in another thread.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing of course.

I think Dunn was probably one of the only people who didn't underestimate the gulf! Some have criticised him for not showing enough ambition (he said he wanted to "be competitive") and even more think that L2 is barely better than the National League (idiots).

We were better than Harrogate last year, any stat or measurement would back that up, but they have a more settled squad, management and the momentum from finishing the season in June - but they are struggling just as badly (1 win in 10, isn't it?). The gulf is massive but some can't (or refuse to) see it.

For what its worth i think lge 2 is shocking. What did Barrow really expect this season ??
They lost Evatt then Rooney. Quigley is a National League Forward playing out of his comfort Zone.
That added to injuries and a bad habit of not holding on to leads. Surely league survival was their aim this season......I expect them to do that with or without Dunne

I dont know if I’d say the gulf is massive, but it’s definitely big. As I’ve said previously, 10 or so years ago teams regularly came up from the NL and went on to get promoted straight from L2 to L1. Barring the odd exception like Tranmere it doesn’t happen anymore, more often than not teams struggle a bit in their first season at least. That to me says there is a gulf, and what I see in the live games I occasionally watch on BT Sport backs that up... yet you regularly hear pundits talk about there being no difference at all. There is.

Your opinion is quite a popular from people on the outside looking in but 2 wins in 22 games speaks for itself. From the start his recruitment was poor and I think generally the squad isn’t as good as last seasons. Only outside the bottom 2 now on goal difference with no signs of improvement and the same repetitive problems, it was only a matter of time.

I Posted on this forum about Barrow inability to attract players. Say you have 100 players who are willing to play in lge 1/2 in the north west. The best 20 go to Blackpool Fleetwood etc......Sorry to say you get the last 5 players
once 15 clubs have cherry picked.
If Bolton finish eighth and Barrow finish third bottom you will have had the better season.

I do agree with you to a certain extent but say for example Chris Taylor who is a player you’ll be well aware of was on trial with us last season and played a couple of Lancs Cup games I believe was deemed not good enough for us in the National League.. fast forward a few months and he’s signed for us in League Two. The players brought in barring maybe James Jones are no better than what we had.

It's more about a clubs reputation and set up, than location.
We have had Randell Williams from Watford, Jake Taylor from Reading, Nicky Law from Bradford.
All were quite happy to come down here despite the distance and competition from other clubs.

Chris Taylor did more in 5 mins against us this season than he ever did playing for us.
A few off here said both you and us wanted Matty Platt...I dont know if this was true but i cannot see many choosing to sign for you over us.

You can attract players who main home/base is in the south west. Plymouth and possibly Cheltenham will be there only other options

it's true - basically you didn't sign him because Evatt boasted he'd be the easiest player to get to sign for you ahead of us and Platt's adviser (his Dad) found out about it.

Woke up ahead of night shift tonight to find out Dunn had gone (not sure if it's a sacking or mutual agreement yet) - and I think the Bradford move to get rid of McCall probably sped things up a lot.
Work should be interesting tonight as one of the regular customers is a Bradford season ticket holder - i guess we'll have plenty to talk about....

If it was mutual it would have said. And Judging by Dunn’s tweet it’s definitely not mutual, he seems pissed off / gutted about it.

Hurst wouldn't be a bad shout for Bradford?

I get the feeling that those above the manager are the issue at Bradford in a way that no manager is likely to set the world alight there?

well fair play to the lad, maybe he was content with knowing he would play each week

I've just told you they were attracted from elsewhere and moved down. If we relied on people being based in the South West no one would sign.

I'm sure that the likes of Eastleigh, Boreham Wood, Kings Lynn...oh, and Notts County too!...are quaking in their boots already.

Unhappy rumblings in Grimsby at the moment; seems our major share holder might be in bed with a chap who's changed his name since he came out of jail. Alex May being the former fraudster in question (formerly Alick Kapikanya). Fishy in melt down and the water seems 'murky' to say the least.
