In management terms, yes. There are plenty of other high profile pros who have failed miserably at management.

Careful what you wish for, the next lot might be worse....

Worse than the bloke who took us from the championship to non league? Worse than the man who courted a (multiple) convicted fraudster to invest in us?

Read up on Jason Stockwood, one of the men in the consortium, he’s a fantastically impressive guy and this is the biggest opportunity the club have ever had to get back to the level Fenty took us down from.

96% of Grimsby fans polled want him out and 86% say they won’t be attending again until he’s gone.

We’re fast becoming Blackpool/Charlton MKIII.

Hurst will tighten them up defensively and improve them.

He seemed to struggle for a while under similar circumstances at Scunny but stated to get some joy before leaving Bottega Don?

I really liked Hurst but I know a lot of other Scunny fans didn't. It took him a while to get it right but he finally seemed to be getting it right and he fell out with our chairman. He wasn't the first to do that and he won't be the last.

He will unfortunately help Grimsby out, not a chance they will be in trouble of going down this year.

Really pleased he's come in so quickly, taking training tomorrow apparently. Not the most flamboyant speaker or character, but he gets results, or he did the first time he was with us. Was doing OK with Shrewsbury and Scunny, but failed at Ipswich.

Yet on the other forum you said this:

I’m very confused.

Got us Hursty back, getting us shape back. Well pleased with that appointment. What's Lenny up to?
Hahaha ok.
Do a search on this HPC2, if they said "not like you to..." about anyone on the forum or "not like xxxxxxx to..." about a team then it's a confirmed Don pseudo account.

I hope not, seems a good bloke should be given time to sort out the behind the scenes issues imo.

Vale always looked pretty good when I've seen them under him. Good managers can have poor runs, doesn't automatically mean they need to be sacked.

It’s beyond sorting now, he lost the dressing room and the whole thing leaves a sour taste to be honest.

I hope he'll be remembered positively for the Man City game/survival/near playoff covid season run.

but you just can't keep your job if you drop off a cliff like we have. 6 points from 36 and knocked out of the cup to a nothing special conference side is simply not good enough.

if there's anything in the sinclair (undermining askey) rumours then the circus may be far from over.

Personally I think it's sad albeit inevitable, it's a results based business above all else if indeed he has gone. I doubt they will as it's clear few of them give a shit but if it turns out he has lost his job or even just decided to walk himself then these players should be ashamed. I still want most of them gone as well. Many of them are an embarrassment to their profession.

If he has gone only wish him well though.

But if it's a case of Askey being a good manager but losing the dressing room due to there being a few bad eggs at the club, isn't it worth side-lining them instead and letting him rebuild.

Sacking the manager isn't always the answer.

I think it’s gone too deep, he booted Clark, McKirdy and Robinson and still seems to be issues possibly with senior players, rumours of the bust up on Saturday as well as rumours back room staff have been undermining him.

It started off as a rumour about 2 players - the last 2 he signed no less, one on a short term loan and one was signed on the eve of the season on a 1 year deal and we knew all about his potential attitude (harry mckirdy)

There's also rumours about backroom staff undermining him (frank sinclair) although i don't know much of the detail.

theo robinson has been outcast by askey and seems to be lumped in with mckirdy and clark, this is a man who has played 400 career games and is yet another askey signing. he didn't cause issues at colchester and im not aware of him having a reputation previously. even if he was causing issues then i can't really blame him if it's based on the lack of playing time and complete lack of chance creation for our strikers though i don't know if thats the case.

I simply don't believe that two junior members of the squad on relatively short term deals can derail a season in which we were in the automatic places in running against Tranmere, and seriously concerned about relegation only 12 matches later.

There are some huge criticisms of askey - he pretty much refused to change formation although on the very rare times he did it was pretty much a disaster other than a trophy win at wigan. His subs are atrocious when he decides to actually use them and his signings have proven to be terrible. Of our strongest 11 when everyone is fit I think even giving him the benefit of the doubt you'd say only Amoo would be be a starter but even then we could cope without him for a few games.

Askey has been poor and there may well have been factors outside of his control that have gone against him but i think you'll really struggle to find any vale fan who backed him still, we've been SO poor recently.

as i said in another thread, i'm normally very late to the party when it comes to wanting vale managers sacked, that includes askey too, it was probably a week or two before Christmas that I decided - people had been calling for it for a few weeks before that. My dad is even worse, he only admitted it was time for Aspin to leave after his last game. Even he has said Askey has to go.

Long as short of it, the whole situation on and off the field just appears to have spiralled out of control and wasn’t going to stop as it was.

I can’t believe Joyce getting sent off would destroy all confidence and see us plummet. The efforts against Barrow and Mansfield had pretty much shown that he had lost it. Mansfield was as bad as I’ve ever seen us... I said the same after Barrow the week before which shows how progressively it was going.

We battered Bolton and did well against Col U and FGR and were looking good against Walsall until half time, maybe injuries didn’t help and Covid but damage was done.

Now official. Askey and Kevan have left Danny Pugh in charge temporarily.

I really hope now JA will go and talk publicly about those “strange happenings”. Nothing to lose so name and shame them.

Best of luck to him, he will get a job elsewhere soon enough. Just impossible to fathom how since that collapse against Tranmere the whole season has completely derailed.

Really gutted for Askey, everything was going fine until that Joyce sending off. It's been a perfect storm since then and I guess he's just not a strong enough character to have turned it round.

Shame to see fans outwardly celebrating like they are though, some people just have no empathy I guess.

Putting my cat down was the right thing to do but I wasn't popping the champagne.

Yep, made the mistake of reading a couple of the comments under the announcement on Twitter and quickly wished I hadn't. Deserves and will get nothing but respect from me. It was right for both parties to go their separate ways but to be honest a fair few people haven't shown themselves in a good light to say the least.
