It's a weird one. From the snippet I heard it's not as if he expects anything to change in terms of the game but it's more about raising awareness of just how crap refs are at this level. I mean they're quite poor in League 2 but it's something else entirely here. If other clubs followed suit then maybe, just maybe the higher ups might do something about it. I don't know what goes on behind doors but it seems like officials get away with making errors far too easily.

So what do you want to do, start banning them?

There's already a dearth of referees as it is without making their job even shitter.

The higher ups don't care. I was informed by my assessor friend that the brief for the play-off finals to the ref had in it that he should do his best to make sure it remains 11v11 to make for a better game, hence the decision to not send off their keeper. When refs are getting briefed like that from the higher ups I doubt the higher ups will care about mistakes made in normal games.

Exactly, Chris FGR. There's no quick fix to make referees better. You just have to learn to deal with it.

Ah OK that makes sense.

We don't have a standing area in use at Wrexham anymore (unfortunately) so I wasn't aware of this rule. There is a seating area behind the goal, only for home fans, that is cheaper than the one the away fans have (it has restricted views because of posts etc.) However, Wrexham fans in the same stand as the away fans and in the stand opposite pay the same price as the away fans.

Are away fans allowed to purchase in advance for the £2 saving?

Putting all wind ups to one side. Talking to a friend after the game Tuesday as you do, he said something along the lines of why do we have to put up with such sh'te refs, my answer, we're in the non-league, what do you expect.

For me the big difference is, at the top end of the game you find full time referees, who often meet, go through incidents in games and other match scenarios in a bid at least try to bring in consistency in to match officiating, at this level that isn't happening, the bizarre thing about our match Tuesday is the 4th official , referee and his assistant are discussing the situation over that substitution for what seemed like a 3-4 minutes, I'm not entirely sure they knew the rules between them, and took the advice of the 4th official.

On the Woking forum some one on there was going on about how us TUFC fans were moaning about Huxtable before the game kicked off, reason, he's a North Devon based referee as such he tends to get appointed to all mid week home fixtures, we've had him times before. Some one on our forum said, you never notice a good referee, you can't fail to notice Huxtable.

Brett Huxtable, creates controversy every time he refs at our place, to be fair we're not always his victim either, he seems to revel in it, not suggesting we start banning referees, there surely is something that can be done improve the standard.

Oh yeah absolute fuck all will come of it, don't have to tell me that, but to say nothing could be done isn't correct. There could be stricter penalties for frequent errors or just better training in general. Again I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes but the infrastructure could always be improved, just a shame it won't. As mentioned it ultimately stems from higher up.

Have any of you ever refereed a game?

It's actually a tough job. Why not try and help referee's get better, either by better training or more help on a matchday rather then punish them for mistakes. It's not like all these cheating players/managers trying to con them all the time is helping.

I agree with Sparrow/Chris tbh, I've seen plenty of incompetent refereeing but the amount of times it's interpreted as malice is frankly laughable. I don't think there's much that can be changed, sure you could inflict harsher penalties but there is a shortage of referees. Who would do it at this level, honestly? It's part and parcel of the game and this "official complaint" is utterly tragic, just move on.

I have run the lines for a few games, but never refereed anything other than 5 or 6-a-side, and it was surprising how much abuse the players gave you when you stuck the flag up for offside. The annoying thing was that I was only doing it as a favour, because they were short of a linesman, so the game could go ahead.

It isn't an easy job and, as pointed out, there will always be players who try to cheat or con the ref. Sometimes when you listen to the comments on phone-ins, like 606, it makes you wonder why anyone would ever want to become a referee. The main fact is that without them there would be no football, so maybe we should cut them some slack.

I've done it a few times too in uni games, as a sub had to do a half each.

The abuse from each team makes it not worth it all. Literally every free kick you get a "REFFFF WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?"

I still don't understand why anyone does it..

I don't understand why there isn't more discipline. That sort of abuse should be an instant red card, that would sort it quickly. After the riots subside, anyway...

I've got every bit of sympathy for the football referee, vociferously accused of being biased or crooked every other game, but I wouldn't get hung up by what they say on 606. I think it's actually one of the best comedies going. Every single week, Liverpool fans from Weston-super-Mare saying the 48 years of supporting their boyhood team are over because the standards of officials is so low and Coutinho misplaced a pass, More Than a Feeling by Boston being played on the Designated Drivers section, and half the pundits on "Name Team Point Go!" being so thick they don't even realise they're on air until five-and-a-half seconds in. Would be nice to be as thick-skinned as a referee, but some football fans aren't worth taking seriously.

I've known a couple of refs, one who's reffed in the Conference and they were in the main unassuming blokes, diminutive in stature, who didn't have many friends and tended to be marginalised in social situations. They were in many ways natural victims and easy targets for life's bullies. I put it to you that their desire to referee stemmed from this and compensated for their lack of control and power in their everyday lives. :gmc:

I know that there isn't much love for rugby on here, which considering it is a football forum is probably to be expected, but maybe we could learn as a game from how they handle dissent. In that game only the captains are allowed to approach the referee, they are also called over whenever a player is being cautioned, and are held responsible for the discipline of their team. A player who abuses a ref can expect to be shown a yellow card, then spend ten minutes in the sin-bin, which largely reduces instances of this happening. The same situation exists in hockey, which is a physical game but one where indiscipline is largely absent.

I'm not hugely in favour of major changes to rules in football, it is pretty good as it is, but less abuse of officials would be a good thing. I do agree with the post quoted, which might result in a bit of a blood bath and teams reduced to eight a side for a bit, but the idea would soon catch on.

Just going back to the admission price thing quickly, quite a few Lincoln fans were slightly confused when they got to Eastleigh last weekend because they ended up paying £3 more to sit in the same stand as the home fans.

It got no more than a few passing mentions.

I was a ref for a Saturday afternoon local game once done the course but never took up on it. Stood in at 15 minutes notice as i wasnt in the squad for that game. Worst experience of my life and i nearly had a brawl with my own team for actually being fair and not one sided like most who step in do. Safe to say i never reffed again and i never played for my team again!!

That is because the more money they can make from away fans, the more 'vision' can be offered to potential transfer targets............

According to our forum we've already sold over 5,000 tickets for our game tomorrow v Welling. With pay on the day fans we will hopefully be looking at a 6,000 plus crowd which I think is good going for the Conference. It's amazing what a few wins and a side playing attractive football can do!
