Its hard to explain, it was every man for himself, scarf hidden under my donkey jacket to avoid getting a pummelling, no stewards, police struggling to control events, these were Albion fans lying there, I was much younger then and although not proud to say it, self preservation won the day. It was an awful situation to be in. Saw virtually nothing of the game as it was pretty much duck and weave all afternoon but know we lost 2-1.
We drew them at home later that season in FA Trophy and a baying mob were waiting for them, thankfully they only bought about 20 fans who the police kept well segregated. Would not ever want to go back to those times.

I wasn't having a go, Terraceman. I probably would have legged it myself as a youth.

Now, being older and knowing the damage that can be done by head injuries, I certainly wouldn't be able to ignore it. Pissing on the unconscious though, is obviously beyond the pale.

Being older and wiser you keep yourself away from that sort of thing, thankfully its something very rare nowadays, certainly at the Pirelli stadium. I had a liver transplant 5 years ago so keeping myself safe and free from harm is paramount in my thoughts when attending games. If my memory serves me correct there was no segregation of fans until we joined the then Conference.

Blimey...don't blame you at all for that approach.

I have been watching non-league football for about thirty years now. Part of the attraction when I started was how civilised an experience it was in comparison to what was happening in the football league at the time. Back then getting to and from games often meant putting personal safety at risk, any Saturday on the rail network meant checking football fixtures to work out if you might end up at a station with your fiercest rivals. At non-league grounds the fans mixed together, changed ends at half-time and overall seemed to have a general respect, even admiration, for each other. There was a bit of kudos from some circles, but not all, for having attended a game in the lower reaches of the pyramid. Some of that still exists today, although most games in the Conference are segregated there will be occasions where that is not the case. This season I have been to Woking and Eastleigh where we were mixed with the home fans, it was a bit like a trip to a bygone age, but one I enjoyed.

With the former there is the absence of that pent-up aggro you can get with the latter (I exclude Kettering Town from this). I couldn't conceive of our lot or Woking's or FGR's fans doing what Grimsby's fans did at Burton Albion back in 2010.
Our games at Dartford and Braintree were not segregated and it all passed without any incident.

I would agree with this to a degree, regarding ex-league sides and attitude. We have welcomed the likes of Barnet, Luton, Bristol Rovers and Kiddy to our ground, they have travelled in large numbers and the games have been fine. This might be due to the relaxing effect of our rural surroundings, which can take the edge off anything. The only team I can remember any issue with, apart from the Grimsby beach ball incident this season, was Oxford Utd. That may be down to an Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire rivalry, we are next door neighbours, or that they view anyone living within 50 miles of Swindon with hatred. Although there wasn't anything to match what was described above, when they visited the atmosphere they generated wasn't too pleasant.

Oxford Utd do have a section of support who always behave like idiots.
The only time we would have taken large numbers to you would have been in 04/05 at the Old Lawn, my only visit there.

Heard a belter on theshaymen.net that I missed first time.

We had Harrogate Railway Athletic for our New Years match in our first season as FCHT, and in the second half one of their players was sent off. Sneakily, the Railway hid the sending off by doing a substitution at the same time, where the substituted player never actually came off but the substitute did come on. It took 5–10 minutes for the referee to realise that there were still 11 men on the pitch.

I can remember going on a supporters coach in the 70's for an away game at Cambridge, the driver got us to the ground ok, trouble was it was Cambridge United and we were playing at Cambridge City !
On my first ever visit to what was then Nuneaton Borough to watch the Albion way back in time I went with some mates in the car, none of us knew where the ground was but we followed the floodlights from some distance, when we arrived it turned out to be Nuneaton Rugby club on a training session.

A friend of mine traveled to Wycombe to watch Wycombe Wanderers play, but he couldn't find the ground (this was pre-Sat Nav days). He luckily found himself behind someone with a Wycombe Wanderers sticker on the back of his car, so he followed him.

Unfortunately the chap drove home, obviously wasn't going to the game that day.
