I actually disagree with this notion. I think the fact that they make it a shite experience for away fans, by making them sit/stand in the open air and limiting the atmosphere is commendable. Make that home advantage count by making the away fans as uncomfortable as you can.

Chesterfield manage that with their heavy handed stewards, I lost count of the number of our fans that were thrown out for swearing on our last visit. We do it by serving warm carlsberg in the kiosk.

Luton were the absolute masters of this art, making you walk through back gardens to get to a stand where it is impossible to sit before the home fans run on the pitch at the end of the game towards your end, looking for a scrap.

Tranmere is probably the best experience I've had while we've been down here. Very hospitable but noisy fanbase, lovely ground, you can generate a great atmosphere and the facilities are excellent. It's no wonder our record there in recent times is quite decent.

As a massive egalitarian, I want opposition fans to enjoy the same comforts i enjoy whilst my team sticks 3 past them. It’s all about equality nowadays chief.

I was amazing that the concourse was carpeted (this might not be true but that's how I remember it) and bright and clean and modern looking which was not what I was used to back in the 90s going to the likes of Blackpool, Rotherham and Hull and their tumble down grounds.

That whole Rushden story ended well as I'm sure we all know.

I went to Blackpool away in 97/98 season and it is still to this day the worst dump I’ve ever been to and that includes all the non league grounds that I’ve done.
Obviously it’s now been redeveloped but back in
97/98 the away end was an absolutely disgusting shit tip.

Yes it was properly falling down around that time. The end terrace was massive from memory but it was in a poor state then and was anything but a pleasant afternoon by the seaside.

To be fair to them a lot of grounds in the third and fourth tiers were just as bad. Saltergate no exception.

Millmoor was a nicely re-painted dump every pre-season and the Railway End (away) facilities were terrible.
However it was covered and a much better stand for acoustics than the Tivoli End so away fans could certainly generate some noise in those days.

When I was a kid , probably late 60s early 70s we used to swop ends at half time if we were kicking that way in the second half.
I can't remember where the away supporters used to go though, maybe onto the side near the corner flag which had no roof on then.

Yeah in that period all the grounds were really shit and probably dangerous. We hadn't got all the new stadiums yet. Blackpool stands out as they had a massive open terrace, but because its Blackpool it was always raining so you'd all cram in under the side stand which had a roof (which had holes on it)

And to get to the away end you had to walk down this dingy alleyway that stunk of piss.

Not Netto but it was definitely a supermarket behind the shallow away end. It used to be a big terrace before the supermarket was built. To be fair to Hull at least they retained some standing behind the whole end, unlike the bodge at Burnden Park where the supermarket there took out the corner of the ground and half the terrace.

Millmoor is still owned by former club owners, the Booth family, and the scrapyard is still on 2 sides of the ground. (Main Stand and Railway End).
You will remember walking down an alley to get to the away end and there are still industrial units all the way down.
The frontage still has the old Tivoli night club in place but it has not been used in donkeys years.
It all looks a very sad sight when you walk past it on the way to NYS.
