He was originally only going to yellow card him, but the lineswoman called him over and after that he got his red card out and changed his mind.The ref's only seen Dayton's shinpad go past him as if he'd thrown it at him. Throwing anything in the direction of the ref with intent is a red card offence.
Dayton may not have meant it and I don't think it's a red, but he's definitely given the ref a reason to do something which you can't do in this league.
I've watched it again - Its clearly done with no intention of doing it in the direction of the ref, he has just been told his ankle is broken and he is annoyed.
But as you said, down here you've got to be so careful, because if you give these refs a chance to do anything out of the ordinary in this league and they will do it - Regardless of who's playing. They don't have the common sense of the officials of a higher level.
