Listening to bignot interview after the game the only way chester will get out of the vln is to be relegated... he was very damning about the set up there ... didnt realise neil young returned for free and walked out due to the problems there. Actually feel quite sorry for them now
It's along story but it goes something like this. We had a good run 2 seasons ago when Ian Sharps was probably the reason. At around that time the chairman, Simon Ollerenshaw (big noise at Merseyrail) decided we needed a professional Ceo, so Mark Maguire was hired at £55k pa (reliably informed). This is the man that is largely responsible for Stockport County's demise allegedly and also Hull City had him to their detriment. SO and Lawrence Kirby (financial director) thought it would be a good idea to cover our backs and give Jon McCarthy a 2-year contact extension.
Ian Sharps left to become 1st team coach at Walsall (Chester were 7th in league at this point). From that point we won 2 more (away) games and reached 52 points which was just enough to keep us up. JM declared job done! We hadn't won a home game since December. Instead of sacking JM and a clause would have meant the pay-off significantly less JM was given our biggest budget bolstered by the money we got from Leicester City for Sam Hughes. In a nutcase he blew the lot on shite including 3 gash players from Macclesfield, Hannah and Turnbull from Barrow and Harry White from Solihull. HW would be stretched in the North West Counties League and finally L Rowe-Turner from Torquay (say no more). We started the season with 4 strikers, a perma-injured winger and 4 defenders. By the time McCarthy was sacked we were doomed.
We had £100k contingency fund, but by the time the board made it public that we needed £50k to see out season that fund had gone. Despite Bignot virtually changing the first 11 we were doomed.
I've followed Chester since 1960 and this is easily the worst team in that time.
The problem persists as the financial director has not resigned. A lot of our fans think he is wonderful. Most of this has come from ex-directors, who I believe know the score. O nearly forgot MM's position was made redundant, but we are still paying him a grand a week.
