Well, that was a great start to the season. Didn't make the game but by the tone of the messages on our forum it's going to be a very long season. Ah well, it's only Nottinghamshire County up next.... should be a stroll in the park.

You've played us at the Shay 7 times in your history and your record is W2 L5. The 4-2 you've completely made up, we won 3-2 last season.
??? Who was that we beat on the telly? Ah, Kings Lynn. Sorry, you Tin Potters are all the same to me, chuck. :ds:

Those goals are shocking!!

Every single one the whole defence and midfield are completely static, may as well sent out the training dummies.
I’m more inclined to blame our midfield myself. What are our central defenders supposed to do if the midfield in front of them puts no pressure on the ball and doesn’t track any runners off the ball?

I think you were caught between doing two different things all game. Kewell packed the centre to try and crowd out R/R, but after a while they worked this out and drifted out wide instead to constantly overload your full backs. Then for the last half an hour you pushed much higher to try and stop them getting the ball to feet, so Francis and our wide centre backs started going over the top/in behind for Jim O’Brien and Joel Taylor all the time instead. I doubt it’s going to be the last time Notts manage to do that to a team this season, was enough from Barnet in the first half not to be too worried yet IMO.

Aaron Hayden was magnificent on Saturday against a very good forward line of Dallas and Newton . Did Barnet trouble Brindley much?

I mean, no. As a defender he shouldn’t be there as he had very little to do, but he was really good as an attacking centre back.

Brindley was a decent RB for us in 17/18, once he was fit. I didn’t even realise he was playing as a centre-half against us!

He shouldn’t be at this level really, classy footballer. I think he’s one of those that suffers from having no outstanding attribute really - he’s just pretty good at everything. Quick without being lightning, decent in the air but not dominant etc. He’s someone I think you could put in League One and he wouldn’t look out of place, but equally if you dropped him down a couple of leagues he wouldn’t stand out as much as he should.

Burchnall turned him into a centre back wide in our three towards the end of last season, he suits it really well.

I'm sure he was a diminutive RB when we had him, I wouldn't have thought he'd suit a CB role at all. I quite liked him but he didn't pull any trees up when we had him really, although he wasn't here long

Don’t really know what to make of TK’s statement re the disaster off the pitch on Saturday. I don’t buy into his BS as much as some but also am willing to give him more slack than others.

But come on, why did no other club suffer from this Heineken strike? Or have chef recruitment issues? Or have problems with their kit suppliers?

It’s not a situation of poor misfortune - it’s poor management in taking cheap options yet again. We should not be this amateur.

With every TK statement there's always a lot of stuff that doesn't get said. I have always found him disingenuous.

Yes he is very, very good at spinning things in a certain way. Many people who know him from the club say the same (when they’ve left of course).

It’s so frustrating as many of these issues are (on the surface) not hard to avoid, or atleast are easy to deal with or resolve. We’re not unlucky with this.

As long as the football isn't Westley like then fine. The issue with Chesterfield will remain them leaving a classic old football ground to go to a lego set.

Don't forget about Westley though the *alleged* stealing of Farnborough FC money. He's just cleverer than Evans.

Ahhh the Lego set jibe. The last bastion of fans whose teams still run their operations like it's 1975.

That Lego stadium pays our HMRC bill, something that Southend struggle with a lot.

I was going to say, as much as I like old grounds the fact that you lot have the Proact probably means your turnover is a lot higher than those of us lumbered with our old decaying stadiums (not that I want us to leave the Racecourse). And its not a bad stadium as new ones go.

Also Saltergate was a bit crap, although I may be influenced by my memories of the Cup QF.

Our ground was designed by a Chesterfield fan who was also the architect of the new Twickenham stadium. Another feather in his cap is the newest stand at the Racecourse!

Saltergate was awful. How people pine after the glory days of standing in outside open air toilets having to pull your trousers up so they don't get soaked by the 2 inches of piss you're wading through, and not being able to get a drink in the place is beyond me. I have fond memories but due to things that happened on the pitch, nothing to do with the hovel itself

My issue with Chesterfield (and a lot of the new grounds) is the location rather than the ground itself. Appreciate we’re very lucky with both sides of it at Meadow Lane, though.

I’ve only ever been to Saltergate once but I like it although that may be because it was my first ever away game and I was only 10 so I was really excited to go.
Also we’d been promoted the week before so it was pretty much just a promotion party and even being spat on by the Chesterfield fans to the side of us through the metal fence didn’t tarnish the day at all.

That still doesn’t sound anywhere near as bad as the away toilets at York City.

Proact is in a mint location tbf, it's not one of these out of town, industrial estate types

On the subject of shit hole grounds has anyone here had the pleasure of visiting Blackpool’s away end before it was redeveloped?

It’s too close to a Big Tesco for my personal taste.

I went there in 1985. Very big, uncovered thing? Don't recall the toilets, I was 16 with corresponding bladder control.

I'm assuming that was the day the ref had to stop the game due to Grimsby fans climbing up the floodlights.

Visited Saltergate twice, drew 1-1 in an FA Cup tie with Tes Bramble getting an equaliser in front of a packed Open end about 15 minutes from time.

Second time was an absolute classic. We were in the main stand and we won 4-3 in our L1 Championship winning season. Freddie Eastwood honed his free kick technique in that one before striking the jackpot against Man U the following season if I remember rightly.

Happy memories.
