Some old pictures of the Gay Meadow are at the links below.

From the Shrews Trust website including a photo of the ground from 1935.

http://www.shrewstales.com/images-gallery/gallery/1-gay-meadow#fwgallerytop

The selection of match photos at the link below date from before 1970 when the roof on the Riverside Terrace was extended the full length of the pitch.

They also show how the old Centre Stand and Wing Stand looked before that stand was converted into a single stand in the early 1980s.

The match photos date from the 1950s.

You could have mentioned the stand at Milton Keynes City, your 'true' club which until its recent demolition was there oldest stand in the world.

Oddly I actually drove right by stadium mk today. Thought of you scummy

It's not OUR ground though. I never supported Milton Keynes City cos they were shit.

I miss you and Dave, come back to League One.

There is a replica of it in a little park around the housing development.

That's how the South Bank looked when I first went to Roots Hall. The East Stand (the one the dugouts are infront of if you've had the pleasure of going to Roots Hall) is also in this picture, thats original from 1955 when the ground ws built.

2010-09-16_33.JPG

This must be 1970's - the Old North Bank was a fantastic terrace (where away fans now sit) until they bolted seats to it to comply with regulations after the Taylor inquiry as the club was then in the 2nd tier. You can see the massive South Bank as was on the right, the capacity of the stadium was 31,000

I'm trying to track down photos of the original Roots Hall as there was a ground on the same sight in 1906 and Southend played there until 1927, they then went to the Kursaal down on the seafront, which I would love to have gone to a game at as one of the stands had a water slide at the back of it. There are stories of big queues for the ride if games got boring! The club only stayed there abour 8 years before moving to Granger Road which was the greyhound stadium. Took 20 years for the club to move to a purpose built football stadium, on the sight of the first ground, which by the 50's was a landfill. Please feel free to make the connects between rubbish and Southend United.

There is no doubt that terracing and wooden stands gave football grounds tremendous character, awful views and facilties, but good character, surely they can have daring designs in steel
