By which I'm clearly referring to the span of time between 1933 and today rather than implying anything else at all related to the example I plucked from the air. Of course. Ahem.
Take it down a notch to something less extreme. Saying something is "the best since", or "the worst since", is a time reference -- it compares everything since to the subject at hand, while conceding it's significantly less good/bad than the example given (hence, the worst/best SINCE). It's a time reference and it's amazing that you somehow seem to disagree. It's a grammatical fact, it's what the combination of words mean.
