How's Pett been for you? I'm assuming more than adequate in L2, will be interesting to see how he does in L1. He got injured in pre-season here and never really got back in (pretty sure he came on as a sub at Posh, had a mare and was never seen again).

He's not the most mobile or athletic of players so I'm not sure how he'll step up.

Been an excellent signing for us to be honest. Does all the dirty work in midfield really well and filled in as captain while Tom Conlon has been injured. Pretty much ran the show for us in the second leg of the playoff against Swindon.

Whether he starts next season over Brad Walker and Ojo next season we’ll see. Walker can do the same stuff but his passing range is among the best at the club. Pett will still get his chance regardless as Walker picks up a yellow every game he plays so will no doubt serve a ban sooner than later.

Yeah Love Pett, his family seem alright too, right getting involved in the Box Park before the final!

He has been Captain for the second half of the season with Conlon out and seems to fit well in our 3-5-2 system as the deep midfielder dictating play, we signed another deep lying midfielder yesterday in Ojo and Brad Walker has been outstanding (his injury saw our winning run end and us limp into the play offs when we were cruising to the Auto's) so plenty of competition. Midfield is probably our strongest area.

Seems like we are desperately trying to get rid of Curtis and Harness for fees so we can actually buy some players

Financially a good way to run but as you say, a bit rubbish for competing. Is anybody showing interest in them? Harness would appear to be a blow but not sure about Curtis. How do you feel if either were to go?

We have kept all of our squad together from last season apart from Jack Iredale and Wes Hoolahan. We have some promising youth players coming through but we need to add 3 or 4 and Bonner has said he'll happily bide his time for the right ones.

Youth Watch
Kai Yearn - 16 and had offers from much bigger clubs. I think he'll be sold for £1m+ in the future. I can see him getting minutes now he has signed his pro contract.
Liam Bennett - although no longer a youth he broke into the team last season and was superb. Excited to see what he does at Walsall this season.
Glenn McConnel - No nonsense CM who at 17 looks more like a 20 year old. Could be his break through season.
Saleem Akanab - Striker who looks like a 25 year old. Big and powerful and can finish. 17 years old.

We play a 4-2-3-1 with a small budget so try to sign versatile players to cover more than one role should we get any injuries.

We need a CB, CDM, LB and Winger. Sounds like the winger may already be done in Saikou Janneh.

GK
Dimi Mitov, Will Mannion, James Holden

Iredale looked fantastic last night in our first pre season friendly playing left centre back in a 3 albeit against non league opposition. Looked very good on the ball. Brings the ball out of defence really well.

We only need 2, maybe 3 more and I’m really happy with the squad. Player for player it’s so much better than we started league one with last season. Our overhaul in January made a huge difference and they are used to playing together now.

Iredale is a fantastic player, he'll be excellent for you. Top pro and top fella as well.

Curtis is a match winner on his day and has decent stats, but has a chip on his shoulder and moans alot. Harness easily has the ability to be at a higher level. Would ideally keep both, but if we get decent sum of money to allow us to bulk the squad then it's a decent sacrifice

Most promising prospect most likely to break in - Finlay Lockett. Proper talent this lad. Winger - 19 goals, 18 assists in the 2020 season for the U18's before doing his ACL missing all of last season. He was heavily linked with Wolves at the time just before the injury. Left footed & all so everything looks a bit more graceful! Hopefully stays fit & challenges for 1st team.

Most of our squad are great ages to be fair... for freshness, energy & potential sell ons. Could be able to do with a couple of experienced older heads who've been there, done it to help guide these lads though. Think we'll bring in two more, quality over quantity this summer for once as we've finally got a settled squad going into a season.

I notice Ronan Darcy isn't mentioned there. Three years ago, when Bolton were in a mess and had to play the kids in their relegation season he (and Denis Politic) looked pretty useful.

Up to Robbie Stockdale (of course) rather than me, but he's someone who could hopefully do Dale a decent job in L2 in midfield if available???

Still contracted for another season....Will go out on loan like last season. Class player on his day would do a good job for a league2 team but wont get anywhere near our first team next season

He’s one that the fans seem to rate more than the manager. He was one of our best prospects along with Politic but doesn’t seem to have kicked on or got the manager’s trust anyway. I think he may end up leaving permanently. But he would be a good loan pick up for league 2 definitely.

Btw what a player Morley is…. He’ll end up playing higher than league 1. Was he a stand out player for you when he played there? Looks different class for us.

We’ve signed someone - Saikou Janneh from Bristol City. Was on loan at Shrewsbury last season, not set the world alight last three seasons but scored 16 in 28 in the national league south three years ago.

One to develop me thinks.

Morley was very good on the whole for us, but not "stand out". His best season was probably about 3 years ago, when he could get forward more (since some bloke called MJ Williams was anchoring our midfield...)

MJ is a bit of an unsung hero for us. A few of our fans don’t see or fully understand how important he is and what he brings to the team. He’s more important when playing 4 at the back… when we switch to a 5 we don’t need that type of player as much. But yeah Morley’s best performances were with MJ next to him.

Reece Brown has signed for us after three years away at Huddersfield (mostly on loan to the Posh). If he's retained the form that he had when we last saw him this has to be good news

Twenty three players, if you take off the three academy players (who I expect to go out on loan for at least part of the season), Stevens who is out for goodness knows how long recovering from ACL surgery...that leaves us with nineteen, three of whom are goalkeepers.

Isn't the number of players allowed on the bench increasing next season? We might need to increase the size of our squad if that is the case.

22 players. Schumacher wants two more in the door. One of them will be a striker, not sure on the other, possibly a centre back. We’re stacked in midfield now and although Panuche Camara is transfer listed, he’s getting his first pre season minutes tomorrow against Bristol City. I think he’ll end up staying.

Ryan Law will also be going out on loan, although Conor Grant is injured at the moment so that’s been put on hold.

As can be seen it needs work at GK, RWB and FW. We have Rory Holden on trial and if all he can prove his fitness he will be added to the midfield as well as some lad from Watford to centre back.

That's a squad of 29 but 5 are youth players who've just signed pro-contracts. Long and Roughan are also young lads but the former will go out on loan and the latter will be a back-up LB.

Lewis Montsma is out until November/December with an ACL and I don't think Maguire will be here by the end of the transfer window tbh. We've got 6 who can play CB but we'll have to overcompensate in that position this season because of the unreliability of Walsh and Jackson's fitness.

IMO we need two CM's because we're awfully light (and lightweight) in there. I've put Bishop and Mandroiu in as midfielders but more number 10's. We lack any sort of defensive minded midfielders, it's currently full of technical, lightweight '10's' and that did us no good last season and those who had some bite, Bridcutt and McGrandles, have left.

A right winger should be on the shopping list because we're short quality wise there, if Kennedy manages to get a tune out of Adelekun given his performances last season then he's a genius.

Up top Kendall and House have come from non-league so another, more experienced performer is need up there, especially if we're going 4-3-3 and effectively a lone striker.

I think we'll end up settling down with a senior squad of 23/24.

6 or 7 to come in and feel more relaxed after the DC/Carol/Flickers interview.

Better to have the right player for 44 weeks than an average one for 52.

A few injuries. Morrell operation on groin will be 3 week ish
Denver Hume slipped discs.. Who knows when he'll be back.
Clarke Robertson. No clue what's wrong with him, but not trained for last week
Jayden Reid. Hamstring issue. A few weeks out
Sean Raggett been out most of pre season although played 45 mins on Tuesday.

No clue how we will lineup. Played 4231, 433 and 442 in pre season. Some of the 1 up top was because we hadn't signed any forwards and had none on the books. No fit senior RW as we sold our only one to Ipswich in Marcus Harness. Reeco Hackett will probably play out there.

Looking to sign 2 wingers in the next couple of weeks as that's our massive weak point. Still trying to flog Curtis, Freeman and Ryan maybe Tunnicliffe. Watch out for Jay Mingi who's been fantastic pre season. Very dynamic central midfielder. Big and athletic player.

(Positions are approximate and subject to change!)

A few obs. Of the 4 keepers, one is our coach (though he is likely to start today) and the other two are youngsters, likely to be loaned out. So we may get another one in.

Defenders look solid but there have been a lot of injuries to those players so we might have a need to get cover in

Wing backs looks a good area, depending if we can keep hold of Josh Key.

Centre mid looks like we now have options, though Kyle Taylor will miss most of the season

Forwards are the big concern for me. Need at least one more number 9, for cover, competition and fitness

Slight change for us since the last update but overall a quiet month, as seems to have been the case through the leagues. Two have gone out on loan, one loan in.

In an ideal world, we could still do with two CM's, a winger and possibly a striker but we might get away with a defensively minded CM and winger.
