Vale have been very disappointing in both games against us this season. Whether that is due to us snuffing out any threat due to our style of play I'm not sure. We were efficient today and took our chances, we didn't need to be great.
Its nice to put that 7-1 thrashing to the back of our minds and remember today instead.
A 4-0 win away at Vale Park I think sends out a message to the other challengers.

Just home, still seething at that, I left my heavily a pregnant missus at home, drove 90 minutes away to watch them, and I get that back, a total lack of effort which is inexcusable.

We totally ditched everything we had done well all season, some comical defending to gift Burton a two goal lead at half time, the first was comedy, the second even worse! We were negative against a side that is Burton not Barcelona and for some reason we insisted on hoofing long balls all game rather than play our usual brand.

I'm really pissed off at the manner of that and how much we contributed to our own failure this afternoon, it's the first time at home I've questioned the attitude and effort but it just wasn't there today at all, Burton played like in a cup final, we played like lads having a Sunday morning knockabout after a heavy night and I can't accept that.

Don't think one single player was at the races today, it's hard enough if two or three are below par but when the lot are your on a hiding to nothing.

Referee was abysmal, let Burton get away with countless fouls whilst pulling us up for everything but that's more of a side note in the end.

Burton played well although didn't need to do much. Maybe a reality check, I wish Burton well but they'll finish bottom next season by a good ten points or so in all reality such will be the gulf in facilities and finance so based on today we clearly aren't ready for a crack at the next level yet.
A little bit disingenuous given we are not even up yet and you are saying we will finish bottom by ten points.
Yet you then say on another post we are well organised and hard working.
We did what we needed to do today. Shame you did not give us more of a game. I really expected a tougher test from vale as you have been in red hot form

I'm crediting that I expect you to go up, but the Championship will be a step to far as it would for us at the moment. The gulf in their facilities and finance will be astronomical. That's not slating Burton who will have achieved the impossible dream but merely the gulf in size you'll face. Your aim should be to avoid the Yeovil follow on from your time up there.

Burton are the best team in the league -competent, organised and no more, that says a lot about this league. Yesterday we were abysmal, nobody played well, several had `mares and the hardest job in football was to name our "man "of the match. When Burton brought on a girl as sub, i thought thats just taking the p.

They are set up perfectly for the Championship, all you need is to be organised and work hard as we have proven. They may well struggle but I don't think they'll be bottom by 10 points.

Agreed, can't help looking at Burton as a club and thinking that's the sort of model we should follow. Indeed that could be true of most clubs in this league actually. Also helps that their owner isn't a complete lunatic like ours it must be said.

Whether they would stay up or not I don't know but they certainly wouldn't disgrace themselves.

If and its still an if at the moment we get promotion to the championship I am sure our first season would be a struggle, survival would be the aim. We would be the smallest club to ever compete at this level.
We have though a very shrewd chairman and if there is a way it can be done he will find it.

First glance at thread since Friday as yesterday was a right off due to being straight in the pub after the 4th goal.
Burton proved why best defence in the League, rock solid and organised. Hooper simply had to score at 0-0, dreadful miss.
No idea where Purkiss was for the 1st goal, the 2nd was a calamity as the free kick decision was disgusting. The 3rd i have no idea what our keeper was doing by the corner flag, by the time he had ran back he was that knackered the shot basically only had to be on target. The 4th i was barely watching !!
5 shots on target for Burton and an 80% strike rate, clinical.

What annoyed me was the raising of the 'white flag' , how on earth we came from 2-0 down at Posh to win the week before is baffling. No heart or fight and the triple substitution was panic in the extreme, you could say well the starting 11 we garbage but was there actually a thought out plan subbing 3 in one go ? Sheer desperation from Page.

Well done Burton and good luck next season, you are surely there. Only downside for me covered on away thread was the terrible following and also vocally were poor, should of been one massive celebration taking the pee out of us but felt like damp squib and a few bursts of ' we are top the league '.

Already brought my Shrews tickets as i fancied at least a draw, hindsight eh

Saturday goes to show that budget and big name signings mean nothing. In the nicest possible way, Burton had no outstanding players but their desire to win the ball back as soon as they'd lost it and to stop us playing shows what can be achieved, regardless of individual ability. To counteract that sort of playing method, you need someone with a bit of magic in them to pull them out of shape (we haven't got anyone to do that) or you need to have 8-10 of your team at the very best of their game (we had maybe 1). I have to say I didn't expect us to capitulate so feebly. A terrible referee who virtually got every decision wrong didn't help but I suspect it wouldn't have made much difference.

With a well organised team like Burton, who actually didn't have that many shots but were just clinical, you've got no chance as once they are ahead they are even more frugal with retaining possession and remaining tight.

Full respect to their coaching staff who have obviously worked tirelessly to perfect this. It's a shame that we can't adopt the same system as individually we have some fairly decent players for this level.

In terms of the game itself, I don't think anybody came out with too much credit. Let's hope it's just one of those days and we can move on. In the meantime I hope that Burton do get promoted as it shows that money isn't everything and with the correct coaching in place (I'm yet to be fully convinced by Page as we've got a really good budget for this level) you can really achieve.

My worry is every single time we get into this position we put in a shocker.

FA Cup Second Round - huge game - awful loss 2-0 against Exeter - Miss out on Liverpool at home.

Millwall Away - Chance to close on the top 6 - awful performance 1-3 loss
Wigan Away - Chance to close on top 6 spots - awful performance 0-3 loss
Burton Home - Chance to close on top 6 spots - super awful performance 0-4 loss

Goes back as far as last season with that horror show at Chesterfield too.

We seem to freeze every single time and we need to look at that, despite some of the extreme rumours on OVF about Saturday which I sincerely hope are not true!

What these games show us is that even if we made the top 6 we'd no doubt freeze and get a pounding in the semi's.

In terms of Burton, whilst I think they will massively struggle next season as I have said that is nothing malicious towards Burton, just the fact the sheer financial might the rest will have in comparison, most Vale have a soft spot for them, myself included (in fact I live less than half hour from Burton) and I hope they romp home to the title and then prove my prediction wrong, great little club, run the right way (and hope they don't deviate from that for short term success) it is a great success story against the odds and however long the success lasts I hope they enjoy every minute.

Cheers valefan16, trust me after nearly 50 years of following the Albion I am enjoying every minute of it, still have to pinch myself some days but it is an amazing rise. Imagine what it would be like for Vale to compete again in the same division with Stoke. Well for us the thought of playing the sheep up the road in the championship next season is probably even bigger.

It will be an experience and every game will be massive with so many huge local sides (plus Leeds, Newcastle or Sunderland likely), luckily i remember the last Potteries Derbies well (in League One mind) be even better if you win! (like we tended to do against the lardies)

I actually attended the 2 games against Stoke when you beat them 1-0 ! Brilliant stuff !

We're the reigning champions of the potteries. Stoke fans know this, and it still pisses them off to this day.

Still feel like I was trying to suck the pea rolling header from Cummins over the line before Cutler got back to it! Stoke then based years of scoring on that goal with Delap doing the Matty Carragher throw!

I see, so we want to hope you win with something to spare before you play us then, is that right?
