Alfreton 1-0 Notts County

Extremely impressed by what I saw last night.

Billy looks to have pulled a few crackers out in the transfer market. Rhys Dolan plucked from local side Selston looks a revelation. We actual look solid and hard to break down and look like for a team for once. Probably for the first time since the Conference days.

Not getting ahead of myself as our success really depends on us keeping a settled side but quietly confident of pulling more than a few surprises this season.

I swear you say this sort of thing every summer but then, a couple of months into the season, you're all doom and gloom and predicting relegation after a run of bad results before Alfreton inevitably recover to end up somewhere in mid-table

Billy Heath back in the good books then?
Not quite. As I say not getting carried away far from it. We have a threadbare squad of 16/17 that with a few injures to the wrong men and we would be in trouble. Also not convinced by Billy tactially either.

We have looked goal shy at times too which could be a concern

Haha we do seem to have just recycled the same season for the last few seasons for the last few years - a good start, a sticky few months with the threat of the drop before we recover to finish mid table as you say.

Lets see how it goes.

I just see us causing a few shocks like we did last season (Beating Stockport,Chorley etc)

We lost 1 nil at home to Crewe.

We've been trialing a 3 at the back formation. It doesn't seem to work so not sure if we'll be using it in the season. Right now it's not ready so I hope not.
Thought you looked fairly organised and decent at the back. But you lack a cutting edge going forward.

Drew 2-2 with Chelsea under-23s today with goals from Jarvis and Collins. Last night a mixture of first team and academy kids beat Sutton Common Rovers 4-2 with a goal from Bolarinwa and a Kearney hat trick.

It looks as though we have a settled core team. The real test starts next week

Last night we should’ve lost but 0-0 to West Ham kids and today we drew 2-2 at Hornchurch, that’s pre season done with.

We are looking like bang average bottom half/mid table side for the coming season. Very weak up top and I think Taylor wants to go long ball to Quigley, Yeah cry for us. Should be defensively sound to get a few points but it’s going to be boring.

Prediction 11th-15th.
at least the West Ham Under 7 side didn't embarrass you too much then

Has to be said that the Sheff Utd team looked very weak (suspect their better players are out on loan), but we look ready for the season now.

Some great additions to the team, and we've got more strength in depth than last year. We need to sign Fox and another defender to be covered in all areas.

Only starting player I have doubts about is Quigley - suits our style but seems worryingly flimsy for a big man.
Agreed on Fox and Quigley. Where was Sam Graham at today - he didn't play for either side???

A very comfortable 2-0 victory away at Oldham to complete our unbeaten pre season.

Still short of a centre back to partner Palmer and might need to bring in another winger as Stephenson picked up an injury that is rumoured to be serious but we seemed to have picked up where we left off despite the loss of a few key players.

I've seen that Evatt has said that a centre back is his priority now - maybe he's decided Graham isn't going to be that player? Personally, I think he looked ideal for us.

from what i've seen i agree - his passes out to the Dior Angus wing were great and his defensive play was sound - he's also quicker than Granite or Hird

If we were needing a centre half I'd have been more than happy with Graham based on his time with us. Typical that the one position we are overloaded in his centre halfs considering our small squad.

As for Quigley, I did warn you that he's not a target man. Doesn't use his body well and barely wins any headers. Fairly good finisher and a bit of link-up play is all you can expect from him.

That's what we need - a good finisher and someone to nod it on to our other forwards, the only problem is that he seems to hit the deck whenever challenged and gets outjumped and outmuscled by teenage defenders. I hope he'll come good, but not seen anything of note from him yet.

Let's put it this way. It got to a point with us when he was getting ironically cheered by some of the crowd for finally winning a header. I say he was a good finisher but he only scored twice for us. Didn't get a mass amount of chances though. He ended up on the bench for us towards the end of the season. Rodney and Duku were much better options.

Quigley had a purple patch when he was with us and did score some excellent goals. He definitely can finish.

That said he's weak as piss and made out of glass. He also seems like a complete confidence player. Three years was a massive gamble.

but as he's playing against his former club and as even Jacob Blyth scored against you last time we met you just know Quigley will score on Saturday.

You always beat us so it won't be a surprise. But the following game he will. Get injured and be out for 6 months.

Conceding isn't something we do often. Don't forget, the best defender in the league was out when you came to the Racecourse and we were absolutely all over the place testing a new formation out. There's also 6 players that will start against you that didn't last time that are improvements in the side (as well as Tollitt and Lainton who won't have better players in their place). I'd still have us down as heavy favourites for the clash.

Not in their cup final we're not, I've already accepted it'll be a disaster. Would much rather play away on the opening day.

Surprisingly we are still winning the ejad to head. 50% of the games have been draws though. As an opener this will probably be a cagey 1-1.

Bryan Hughes has said Barrow would be foolish to prepare for a particular formation against us.

We're probably going with a 6-1-3 then.

We'll be playing 4-3-3 regardless. He's foolish if he's expecting Barrow to do anything different...

Honestly, I think we will be too. How many do you think you'll bring? A few more with it being the first game?

Yeah, I reckon at least 350-400, which is good for us. Could be more though, as our friendlies have been well attended this summer.

We are meant to play Oldham tonight. The way our pre-season has gone it will be called off knowing our luck due to all the rain. Terrible around here. Hope it's better in Oldham

Couple of interesting ones on our team sheet. Sanmi Odelusi - who we released at the end of last season. Liam Nolan - Been on trial all pre-season anyway so presume he's signed. 5 trialists too. Presume two of them will be Ben Wyatt and Regan Booty

We've just beaten a strong Oldham team by the sounds of it 1-0. Very good performance according to people who went. Figured out some of the trialists. Jerome Binnom-Williams... i daren't ask about him. Ben Wyatt and Regan Booty played again. Other two were wingers. One believed to be Danny Williams - ex Accrington and had a brief loan spell at Fylde. Is he any good Fylde fans?
