I think my previous selection is still favourite but I'm not 100% convinced Lisbie will get the start as Gash is really making an effort to get noticed, he's half the man he was last season.

He's put in two really impressive performances in the last two friendlies, hasn't he. I fancy him to start over Kev, the thinking being that if Gashy does more of the physical work to occupy defenders, then John might have more free reign up front.

Tommo is also staking a claim to start - he looks really impressive on the wing. Up and down all game, has a decent shot and cross on him and puts in a cruching challenge every now and then.

It's now looking likely to be something like this:

Flinders
McCombe - Winfield - Lowe
McCoy - Berrett - Penn - Summerfield - Straker
Oliver - Someone else

Swan might replace McCombe if he's fit. I think McCoy will play over Nolan as he's been decent in pre-season, despite our fans pretty much uniformly thinking he's useless. Straker seems to be favoured over Carson, though that could change pretty quickly.

God knows who will play up front with Vadaine Oliver. Hyde and Sinclair are both injured and haven't kicked a ball in pre-season. We're apparently trying to sign Reece Thompson from Frickley, he's been on trial with us and scored a cracker against Newcastle, looks lively. It's been one of the big frustrations of pre-season, Oliver wins everything in the air but there's no other York player within 20 yards of him.

Last friendly tomorrow, suspect we'll see our planned XI for the first real game so I'll get my final prediction in now. I'm going with:

1305285_Luton_Town.jpg

With a strong looking bench of:
GK - Mark Tyler
RB - Stephen O'Donnell
LB - Dan Potts
CM - Cameron McGeehan
RM - Pelly Ruddock
LM - Paddy McCourt
ST - Josh McQuoid

Tyler is still first choice but he's been out for a while and Still will want to show confidence in Justham and avoid rushing Tyler back too soon I suspect. O'Donnell is far more defensively suspect than Cuthbert, I expect we'll see him used more at home than away at right back at least to start with. Potts has apparently been great in pre-season, but Griffiths/Wilko/McNulty are the tried and trusted combo and they will have to be displaced I reckon. Likewise with Doyle and Smith; also as they are the solid option away from home. McCourt has been injured and Lawless is more likely to put a shift in down the flank away from home anyway. McGeehan, McCourt and Pelly are excellent impact subs.

I'm not so confident about that bench selection actually, it's anyone's guess who will make the 18 this season due to our squad depth now. I can see Still trying to make room on the bench for Luke Guttridge and/or Jack Marriott (who has been excellent in his cameo pre-season appearances by all accounts).

Curle has said:
I’ve tried to formulate a squad where, if I want to play 4-1-4-1, 4-4-2, 3-4-1-2 or 4-3-3, I can do that.
With any one of those formations I’d be very happy with the personnel I could put in those positions. I will be putting square pegs in square holes.
Sometimes within a game you might see us change formations two or three times if we’re able to exploit the opposition. We need that flexibility. We’re not going to be a one-trick pony.

So with that in mind, thinking if I can imagine what his line-ups would be for the four formations he has mentioned:

4-1-4-1
_______________Gillespie______________
Miller____Atkinson___Troy___Grainger
________________Joyce________________
Thomson__Kennedy__Hery______Osei
________________Wyke________________

4-4-2
_______________Gillespie______________
Miller____Atkinson___Troy___Grainger
Thomson__Kennedy__Joyce______Osei
____________Ibehre___Wyke___________

3-4-2-1
_______________Gillespie______________
___Atkinson_____Troy_____Grainger___
Miller____Kennedy____Joyce___Brough
___________Hery______Ibehre__________
________________Wyke________________

4-3-3
_______________Gillespie______________
Miller____Atkinson___Troy___Grainger
_____Kennedy___Joyce___Hery________
______Wyke____Ibehre___Osei________

Honestly, I don't really know. There's the question of whether Troy, when fit will still be preferred over Raynes/Atkinson, whether Grainger will still be undroppable, when you have Brough looking like such a good prospect, what Curle sees as being the best positions for the likes of McQueen, under what circumstances we could see players like Rigg and Asamoah chosen. Also Curle didn't mention 3-5-2, and I don't know if he's used it in pre-season, when it looked for a while as though he was building a squad to that formation with Brough and Miller as wing-backs.

Shoddy, I believe we played 3-5-2 against Preston which worked fairly well I thought.

I'd still go 3-5-2 as our preferred formation:

Gillespie

RWB: Miller
CB: Atkinson
CB: Raynes/Troy
CB: Grainger
LWB: Brough

DM: Joyce
CM: Kennedy
CM: Hery

CF: Wyke
CF: Ibehre

Subs: Gary Woods (GK), Connor Essam, Sammy Moore, Blair Turgott, Harry Lee, Ollie Palmer, Scott Kashkett

Might still be one or two ins and outs over the next week. Very decent side, but yak-all on the bench.

Lockyer --- J. Clarke ---- Parkes ----- Brown
Bodin ------ Sinclair ----- Lines ------ Montano
----------------- Easter --- Taylor ------------------

Subs: Preston (GK), Greenslade, Leadbitter, O. Clarke, Mansell, Blissett, Harrison

That is what I think our team and bench will be if DC gets a couple of players back from injury as he hopes (Brown, Mansell). I would personally like to see Leadbitter start at right back as Lockyer is definitely not a full back, but he is a great young player and DC has gone on record as saying he is almost undroppable.

We are trying to complete a loan signing or two before next Saturday - one thought to be a right winger - and that will change our line-up, but this is how I think we will play as things stand.

The starting 11 looks nailed on. Personally, I think we lack energy in that midfield 3 so I'd swap Oakley for McCready and maybe Nicholls for Wheeler as the latter offers a much more devastating impact from the bench. Other than that I'm fairly pleased. Looking forward to Yeovil.

We go again. I say this tentatively, but we may not sign anyone else before Saturday, so I expect something along these lines to be our starting XI:

Roy Carroll
Elliott Hewitt - Mawouna Amevor - Civard Sprockel - Blair Adams
Julian Jenner - Gill Swerts - Curtis Thompson - Genaro Snijders
Jon Stead - Jimmy Spencer

It almost certainly won't be that, though. Stanley Aborah has played consistently throughout pre-season, but Thompson should be the first name on the teamsheet and it's hard to see Swerts not playing. Adams is an injury doubt, I think, not sure who'll play if he's not fit. Maybe Audel, maybe Sharpe. We can actually put out a reserve team that looks like a competent League Two outfit:

Scott Loach
Wes Atkinson - Thierry Audel - Haydn Hollis - Rhys Sharpe
Kyle de Silva - Stanley Aborah - Rob Milsom - Filip Valencic
Adam Campbell - Graham Burke

Even that's leaving out Noble and Murray, who most would've expected to be a big part of our plans at the start of the summer. Just got to be some concern that having too many players will be our downfall, I have no idea how we keep them all happy, especially in midfield.

Probably...

GK Scott Flinders
CB Keith Lowe
CB Dave Winfield
CB Stephane Zubar
RWB Marvin McCoy
LWB Josh Carson
CM James Berrett
CM Russ Penn
CM Luke Summerfield
FW Vadaine Oliver
FW Reece Thompson
Jake Hyde not ready after injury. Coulson injured. Nolan not ready, and its any one of four for LWB none of whom are convincing. There's a lack of flair there but we look pretty solid. Vadaine Oliver has impressed pre-season though and young Thompson could be anything, so we may have more up front. I see no reason to believe that we'll finish any lower than last season.

Yep, looks about right, that. A nice surprise that Zubar is back. I think Oliver and Thompson could be a very decent partnership, but I guess we'll see soon enough.

Due to a couple of niggling injuries in the CB position, 4231 would be my guess v Hartlepool

GK: Barry Roche
RB: Shaun Beeley
CB: Andy Parrish
CB: Ryan Edwards
LB: Laurence Wilson
DM: Peter Murphy (c)
DM: Aaron Wildig
AMR: Jamie Devitt
AMC: Lee Molyneux
AML: Kevin Ellison
ST: Paul Mullin

Plenty of options from the bench with Shaun Miller, Tom Barkhuizen and Andy Fleming able to influence things going forward.

I am however ready to see the mighty Rakish rip us a new one..........please god let all of our boys come back safely.

Cambridge:

Dunn
Omozusi, Roberts, Legge, Dunk
Donaldson, Berry, Keane, TBC
Corr, Carr

I really hope we have a left winger coming in and Carr might be benched if we sign another forward.

I'd like Corr and Slew up front.

I'm not sure (good as he is) that I can squeeze Newton into the starting line up and would go with Omozusi and Dunk as wing backs.

That may be a midfield for Rotherham or Carlisle, assuming Berry/Morrissey is the alternative, but I would like to see Donaldson get 60 minutes against Newport, with a pair of Hughes on the bench.

Lisbie and Tomlinson both inured so a couple of changes. Gash will replace Lisbie. LM will be Gambin or Vilhete, my money will be on Vilhete just because he offers more supporting the defence.

Is that the Donaldson that hasn't played a minute of pre-season? For me, Hughes and Newton deserve to start ahead of him and I fully expect them to play. I believe Rotherham to be a game that will be more suited for Donaldson to get 60 mins. We'll see tomorrow.
