I was completely against this until I realised that competitive B team football might just prevent premier league clubs from inundating lower league football with loan players that provide unfair advantages to a handful of teams with those links. How often does a team in leagues one or two get promoted thanks to a couple of outstanding loan players that they could never have afforded to attracted on their own.
Speaking just for League Two, not that often. Although I'm not sure that I buy your thinking anyway - clubs won't give their young players 50 games in League One because they can have three games against the League One reserves instead? Or perhaps managers will stop players going on loan to clubs run by their mates because they need the youngsters for the all-important JPT campaign? Neither seem very likely.
To be clear, very few people are crying about the loss of the JPT. If it's not viable, scrap it. Don't relegate the club I love to something resembling a training obstacle for the Premiership reserve teams though.
It's very sad to see people coming round to the idea. Doubtless when the next nudge along the line to L3 occurs, we can find a reason to justify that as well.
Lower league football fans in England are an absolutely fantastic collective. It's just a shame we are so spineless that our own clubs can freely admit they voted for something knowing all their supporters hated it.
