Tom Reeve was just shy of middling today. Nothing spectacularly wrong but enough questionable decisions to raise an eyebrow at.

I did like the way he booked a Crawley player for holding onto the ball but he did let a Carlisle player dribble the ball away from a free kick...nothing bad but it is annoying. By the end the Crawley fans felt he was favouring Carlilse. I just got the idea a couple of Crawley players wound him up so he was giving the fifty fifties to Carlilse.

In short not bad but could improve.

Saturday the 18th of September

Bradford v Barrow - TOM REEVES
Bristol R v L'Orient - DAVID ROCK
Carlisle v Scunthorpe - REBECCA WELCH
Cochester v Crawley - CHRIS SARGINSON
Exeter v Sutton - SCOTT OLDHAM
Mansfield v Rochdale - CARL BOYESON
Newport v Walsall - LEE SWABEY
Northampton v Swindon - BRETT HUXTABLE
Oldham v Hartlepool - CHARLES BREAKSPEAR
Port Vale v Harrogate - ANDREW KITCHEN
Stevenage v FGR - SAM ALLISON
Tranmere v Salford - SAM PURKISS

From what I remember, there's a couple of referees here generally considered good... Welch and Oldham and a few who have had bad reviews this season; Sarginson, Boyeson, Huxtable and Kitchen.

Never heard of David Rock before though he has been on the national list since 2019 and has refereed 26 league 2 games.

On Tuesday the 21st an old favourite appears for the first time this season I can remember.

Crawley v Harrogate - DARREN DRYSDALE

I'm sure John Yems is gonna love him.

No Trevor Kettle this week.

Darren Drysdale has been at Barrow, Sutton, Crewe and three EFL Cup and Trophy games this season already. 29 Yellow and one red.

I do feel in the last two or three games I have seen of the Hux, plus a pre-season friendly, he is looking better. While he still runs in slow motion, with experience he does control a game better now.

Huxtable reffed us once and knew someone in the crowd who gave him a Mars Bar, which he promptly ate. Not sure about that as part of the warm up?

I thought Carl Boyeson was very good yesterday and thought he ought to be retiring by now as I first saw him at the Mill in 2002

Kitchen had a fairly decent game I thought, he didn’t let Harrogate get away with some robust tactics and booked their lad correctly when he stood in front of Wozza as he took a free kick, another yellow was correct when Wozza burst forward and was taken out, little too far back to be a red so correct there.

Diamond escaped a second yellow which should have been after 17 minutes when he was done by Proctor and dumped him on his arse but gave him his last warning so probably was right to send him off on half time when he recklessly threw himself into an aerial dual with Covolan. He made a meal of it and on the face of it was probably in itself harsh as a second yellow but was more an accumulation of incidents to earn it, and was very lucky to still be on by that point.

Liked the way he didn’t fall for some of their feigning second half, should of booked their big striker when he went down holding his face, didn’t get the decision so jumps straight up!

Overall though he did well. Set the tone of what he would accept and booked them early on.

Seemed a bit finicky, but otherwise alright. The eight year old girl stood to my left was not a fan though 'this referee's crap' all throughout the game  Just seemed like she gave a lot of free kicks for players flopping over... that said she got no help from her linesman at our end, he was rubbish.

Booked both managers at the final whistle

According to Chris Beech he had been complaining to the fourth official since the start of injury time about it being only 5 minutes given a lot of timewasting by Scunthorpe. Then when we scored he went and celebrated right in said official's face... presumably Cox got involved.

The timewasting was helped a little by some of the soft free kicks that Welch seemed to be giving. It wasn't an especially bad amount of timewasting, but enough to add up to (Beech felt) more than five minutes stoppage time; there were a couple of slow walk offs from subs, two or three stoppages for treatment, the standard goalie tactic of putting the ball down for a goal kick, eyeing it up, then dribbling it to the other corner of the box to take it from there; but never quite enough to warrant a booking so there wasn't much Welch could do. The amount of soft free kicks didn't help our cause as naturally Scunthorpe took the maximum amount of time over each, so she just seemed very finicky in that respect, whenever there was a bit of a physical challenge it would always result in a Scunthorpe free kick. Seemed to take a long time for play to resume after we pulled a goal back too.

How was he allowed to ref argyle when he's an argyle fan?

Fella we had on Saturday was dreadful. First season in the EFL for him I think and it showed. One of them where he tries so hard to make it look like he isn't being influenced by a home crowd that he actually ends up giving us nothing.

We always believed he was a Grecian fan. A ref on Pasoti who knew him asked the question, and categorically the answer was that he supported neither of our teams. I think he was a fan of someone like Man Utd, at whose level he’ll never get to.

I notice that Declan Bourne was reffing on the first set of fixtures on this thread and hasn’t been on any games since which speaks volumes as he is the worst referee I’ve ever seen.
Reffed both of our games v Salford last year and I can’t be arsed listing the multitude of awful decisions he gave against us in the away game but somewhere there is a 2 minute clip of them all and one or two you can accept but 9 or 10 in the same game stinks of more than just incompetence.
He also gave them 3 penalties in the game at Blundell Park too.
Wanker.

Edit: I’ve found the clip if anyone’s bothered, it’s actually about a minute and a half but one is missed off where John-Lewis has a tap in in injury time where the defender just pushes him out of the way instead that the guy has added below it.
Ladies and Gents the legend that is Declan Bourne:

Darren Drysdale had a match that showed he is not up to the standard of league football tonight.

I've seen Mr Drysdale ref matches on the TV. He looked OK, a bit picky, but OK. He was absolutely awful.

I’ve seen him manage mansfield and he’s terrible, i’ve seen him be hopelessly biased against (which we lost all 3 times) and then got once (which we still lost!)

Our ref has changed to Rob Lewis.

Last time he reffed us he sent off Jordan Clarke for a horrific dive against Southend. A dive so egregious that Dieng was suspended for it.

Can't wait for his incredible decision making tomorrow.

Charles Breakspear had an OK game in Crawley v Bradford. Missed a couple of things but generally handled the game pretty well.

After the calamity that was Drysdale it was so nice just have a ref who was ... well, a ref !

The words "Carl Boyeson" and "very good" should never be used in the same sentence unless it is "it will be a very good day for football fans in this country when Carl Boyeson retires".

One of the best refs I ever saw at this level was an Indian guy called Jarnial Singh who actually worn a turban when he was in charge of games. only saw him twice and he was excellent both times. Sadly he only reffed at League level for a few seasons before he was forced to retire at 45, which used to be the compulsory age at one time. Meanwhile Boyeson, Kettle and a few of the other "worst of a bad bunch" clowns are still ruining fans Saturday afternoons and Tuesday evenings aged well over 50.

Mark Clattenburg was pushing his new book on BBC Breakfast this morning.

My god! What a smug, self-important little prig he was/is. Yes of course Mark - the game was always more about you than the football.

Jarnail Singh's sons have followed in his footsteps. Sunny Gill is on the National League list as a ref with his younger brother Bhupinder running the line at Championship level.
