Seems foolish, Northampton will finish above Charlton next season. But money speaks.

Wilder specialises in taking on clubs that are at their nadir. I think people lose sight of how badly his previous clubs were doing when he took over. Maybe he has underestimated the current situation at Charlton, I wouldn't know, but I don't think I'd blame him for looking for at the ceiling of a club, given his record. He was very good for Oxford and he has clearly learnt a lot of lessons from the mistakes he did make. Would be as good an appointment as they could make.

Agreed. I'm pretty sure he'd do a good job at Charlton and manage to get them straight back up.

From what I know of him and that video posted in this thread, he is exactly the type of manager/bloke we need.

Someone who is not afraid to speak up, passionate, cares about his players etc. We need someone who is going to stick a boot up the players' arse. If the board are true to their word (doubtful) and he is given full control with cash to spend, I would be very confident of a positive season.

I'm still awaiting news that he has laughed at the clubs offer and told them to shove it, we've supposedly been close to getting managers before before subsequently being turned down. Until it's completely official, there is a very real chance of that happening.

He's perfect at getting a mentality fostered in his players along the lines 'Let's prove these twats wrong'. It's what made him perfect for us when we were bottom of League 2 by 7 points and perfect when people weren't being paid for 6 weeks. People will run through brick walls for him. I don't want him to go, the best Cobblers manager I've seen in my 15 years, and he's gonna be bloody hard to replace.

He can't fail by going to Charlton.

He's gonna at least double his wages. If it goes wrong then it's not his fault, it's the boards fault. If he does well he's a hero and his stock rises even more.

Summed up absolutely perfectly IMO.

Our local rag reporting there has been a 'snag'

Looks like good news Northampton fans.

Our club are an absolute fucking joke, so predictable, at least it's left them with egg on their faces yet again. This quite clearly shows everyone how inept this board are, how can you offer a manager more money, a bigger budget and still not land him?

Wouldnt shock me from what the Charlton fans have been saying. Still hoping I soon read Wilder stays and signs a new deal. Even though I would expect him to leave in the next 18 months as I cant see us performing badly in league 1.

If there's been a break down, he definitely won't be joining us.

If he and the club disagree in something, they won't back down so this is as good as dead now.

Is he the sort manager who would want to told who to sign and even who to pick as has been alleged?

Will this not have a bad effect like Clarke talking to Fulham whilst at Reading? Can't see it ending well.

I don't think so, we want him to stay. We understand he's going to be sought after, and he deserves the chance to go and speak to other clubs. If he comes back and signs a new contract here we'll be right on board.

That was during the season as well though and Reading were on a bad run anyway...

Charlton Athletic deal for Chris Wilder done and assistant Alan Knill set to follow from Northampton.

This looks to me as if the deal for Knill could have been the snag. There are just no excuses our end, made it clear Wilder was our first choice, the man we wanted. If that's the case, you give him what he wants and/or needs.

EricSabin, I would not be surprised if it is contract length either. It's very typical of this regime, spout lies about how this is the man for the job etc and then fail to back any of it up by offering him a shoddy contract.

This just stinks of another PR stunt to me. I bet they had no intention of bringing Wilder in and knew full well he wouldn't accept their terms but now they can bullshit the fans once more about how they tried really hard to get a British manager in but it wasn't to be and we'll end up with some other clown from the network.

And you always believe the press?

Well you always believe Katrien. I think Rich Cawley has more brains and integrity than her.

Update that thread title!

We always thought he'd go there tbf so I'm not too surprised they see him as the ideal replacement and are moving fast while he's on the market

They shouldn't have even had a sniff, this should have been wrapped up.

Chris Wilder will not be the new #cafc manager. Really wanted job but club refused to put the assurances over control, buying etc in writing

And there you go folks. This club is doomed.
