To be fair I was fairly critical of Hurst during his time at Grimsby as well. I always maintained he's the perfect manager for a side with minimal expectations, i.e. staying up or a mid-table finish, because he'll get the most out of fairly average players. But when he's in charge of a team who are expected to win the league or at least challenge for the title, as he was at Grimsby, he struggled. To his credit, he eventually got them up but there was more than a bit of fortune involved.
Looks like Shrewsbury at League 1 level or above is the perfect club for him then - perhaps he'll end staying there for years. I confess I expected us to win the League after Operation Promotion and was highly critical of some of his decisions - particularly early on in the season; he should have brought in a loan keeper after Jimmy Mck went down with viral meningitis, missing most of pre-season training. He cost us half of dozen points with errors and the defence got jittery as a result. He was also tactically outfoxed by Gary Johnson in the 2 key games with Cheltenham. On the other hand, if you looked at the stats, we dominated possession and had good shots on target number in most games, we played decent if somewhat unambitious football. In the wide open spaces of Wembley we came good just at the right time.

Phil Brown has turned it down.
Why would he do that - what an opportunity it is - the sleeping giant of Lincolnshire football, has he no knowledge of the great history of the club and the chance of restoring that greatness?

Just don’t bring in anyone new before Saturday, please.

Thanks very much.

I wouldn’t worry; even if we did bring someone in, the rot is so deep that it’ll be at least a month before any turnaround in fortunes.

Despite how awful we are i'm looking forward to Saturday, yours and Pompey's were the best fans to visit Blundell Park last season, I remember you guys doing the conga round the Osmond it was quality.

I think you will find Brown turned down 'the chance' to manage Grimsby Town FC, rather than turned down 'an offer' to manage Grimsby Town FC. Meaning he left the negotiations before being short listed or ignored by our Board.

Big difference.

Easiest 3 points of the season for Exeter on Saturday. I just hope that they win tonight to keep Crewe below us. A Carlisle win would be good too.

It's a bit bad when you have to rely on other teams losing.

From what I heard though, Brown was never in the running. Too much of a "fruitloop" apparently. :bg:

John Askey interview tonight makes it sound like he would possibly be interested in the job, to me at least. I'll be surprised if there's no approach for him after McCall and Brown told us no. I have no idea if he'd have what it takes to save us. We are literally hoping for the teams below to stay shit or we're doomed.

Thankfully tonight Barnet and Crewe have indeed stayed shit.

Askey always gives the impression he'd be interested in jobs when they come up but never actually moves. He will do at some point, though. Flirts with any Club who shows a bit of an interest. It'd be a weird time to leave at the minute because there have been other occasions when Macclesfield weren't as well placed and he rejected moves.

On Brown - wanted silly, silly money.

Yeah he'd be mad to swap clubs at the minute. I can't see us attracting anybody with any sort of experience. It'll have to be a coach somewhere looking for their first manager position, ie Robbie Stockdale type, or someone well below where Macclesfield currently sit. I genuinely think we're stuck with Wilkinson.

I just find it mad that clubs sack managers and have no quick alternative of who the successor will be. Focusing on Slade's departure, we could all see this coming for what at least a month if not more. Surely they could have informally drawn up a potential and realistic successors list. Looking at us, I would be really disappointed if we don't have 2 or 3 names of managers who we'd be interested in and vice versa should the Cowley's leave.

Yeah but last time Fenty did it quickly was when he appointed Slade straight after Bignot was sacked, and that ended well.

That's true Slade was appointed quickly. I just don't get these long gaps between a sacking and appointing a new manager. It's rare that a sacking comes out of the blue.

What? 36.7% win percentage as a manager. 2 manager of the year awards.

And you wanted Phil Brown who has a worse win percentage!

Slade is a good manager, as proven throughout his managerial career.

So you'd like him back at your club then yeah after how successful he was?

Why don't Grimsby appoint Hockaday? Fairly local and has managed at a higher level, and had a 50% win record at Coventry.

He'd take the job I think.

Not what I said. Odd way at looking at things. Judge his overall managerial manager, clearly a top manager. Also a nice bloke to boot, when my lad was mascot he let him go into his office. Football needs more characters like Russell, a dying breed.

Slade was a good manager, but he's lost whatever former talent and skills he had in the past and now turns whatever he touches to a pile of rubbish. Now if he could go to Leicester and/or Aston Villa and relegate them two or three divisions then I'd say he's done a good job.
