Since both Gloucestershire clubs were promoted to national competitions in the late 1980s there has been little competition between the two clubs. But the results have been fairly even as is shown: -

Sadly for FGR supporters it shows that their team have never won a home league game during that time. Small consolation for them is that Cheltenham’s last win came during Covid when no supporters were at game > therefore very few fans has ever seen their team win a league game at Nailsworth.

It is a proud boast by the Cheltenham faithful that every season their team has always finished above FGR, and so it has been since both clubs were promoted to national competition BUT in the Brimscombe & Thrupp FC hospitality suite they proudly display picture of table for their 1922 title win in the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League which shows FGR in 4th and Cheltenham at 8th.

Brimscombe & Thrupp now play in the Hellenic League (Level 9 on Football Pyramid).

I'm amazed he forgot that FGR actually finished above Cheltenham a mere 4 years ago as well.

Cheltenham fans don't boast about finishing above FGR every year since 1983 (bar one), they boast about being the top team in Gloucestershire (The Bristols don't count). FGR are an irrelevance to most, though a lot of the younger fans have been so starved of a rival they do consider them our biggest at this current time.

On form, we should win on Saturday. I suspect it'll be a draw though.

Talking of derbies - we got one Saturday.
This sold out 10 days ago, and the council even increased the capacity strangely after 17 years by another 200 ( fuck knows where ).
Will be a good game hopefully and we turn them over. Will always remember when we beat them 1-0 in the championship a few years ago; how times have changed for us both.
I reckon a frenetic 2-2 draw.

Looks like it's gonna be a complete sell out with only 300 tickets in the Big Bank left.. will probably be Wednesday fans in the home end, but just like Ipswich, if they keep themselves to themselves, they'll be fine.

Would take a point, and be interesting to see what team GC plays, especially after playing 4 CB's on Friday night.

Not that we've ever had a good time this season, but as Si says not the best time for meeting Cheltenham as they seem to have found some decent form and grit. Still should count as a game we might win though so can only hope for antoher desperately needed three points. If we can crawl out of the bottom four going into January chances look much brighter.

Looks like all the Danny Dyer-type pwopa nawty action will be in Gloucestershire this weekend then. No idea why they didn't set The Football Factory around the FGR/Cheltenham rumble.

Good honest bread-and-butter type fixture for us vs a team in the same "middling consistency but still with a very outside chance of the playoffs" bracket.

I couldn't honestly claim much familiarity with Lincoln's squad, but looking at their results this campaign, they've certainly beaten better sides than us, so it should be a good challenge. We've struggled to string back-to-back wins together though this time round, so let's hope we didn't blow any hint of quality just on looking good in front of the Sky cameras yesterday.

Obviously all eyes will be on Englands version of Boca v River in Gloucestershire but reckon our game at Rovers should be a good one. Think we are two very evenly matched teams and am sure DC will look forward to going back there too. We look in good form at the moment and a big win at Plymouth last time out but means nothing for this one. Would be content with a draw here.

Bristol Rovers away, oddly almost a year after our last rain soaked visit!

Two fairly evenly matched sides, both progressive clubs who have had a very good start to life back in League One and a game both will look at as fairly winnable.

We are doing well away, having only lost 2 of our last 9 away games with 5 wins culminating in a superb team performance to end Plymouth's home record of 9 straight wins.

Rovers have not been losing many recently but the majority seem to be draws so should be a good match up.

We are certainly going to have to keep the standards up to get anything here, Plymouth is gone and will have no bearing on this at all and they've generally played well and we know it will be a battle there.

One worry is we will have to wear our third "Caramel Gold" kit... which we've won only once in and that was 15 months ago! We never seem to get anything in it!

Looks like its staying at the original kick off time, guess the main concern is the freezing temperatures forecast later in the week and to if there is a risk of a P-P.

Overall despite our form I would take a point here, these are a good club, good side and a point on the road would set up two home games against struggling sides very nicely. 1-1 Butterworth

As others have said, two pretty evenly matched teams. Rovers looked one of the stronger teams to come to Vale Park last season and celebrated their win like a world Cup final. They did however have two excellent loan players that were way too good for the bottom division, but looked to have replaced reasonably well.

Will be interesting to see how Gibbons is going on. A wholehearted player, I really liked him.

If we maintain the work rate and quality of the other night then hopefully our anti football will shine through. Would be delighted with a draw though going into two friendlier looking home fixtures. Always a tricky place to go and good set of fans who back their team.

The match on Saturday will be the first and greatest most important league match in the history of Gloucestershire football EVER.
Sad that it is clashing same day with England in World Cup but I suspect the TNL will be at capacity. Both sets of fans will be able to return home before start of England match. Benefit for away side to play a local team.
Cheltenham supporters will fill away West Stand block plus many masquerading as FGR supporters to obtain entry, as they usually do.
Cheltenham are the current form team, 4th in table while FGR languish near the bottom. However over the past few years this situation is not unique and FGR have had some excellent wins against form. Both teams had win in last game. I would not be surprised at any result, win draw or loss, but I'm echoing Si Robin's forecast that game ends in a draw.

I like you BY but to suggest any of the three games you mention are fake derbies is just laughable. Can I ask if you’ve ever actually been to any of those games to judge?

Obviously I’ve been to the Ipswich/Nodge game and it is as intense as I can imagine any of the other games being. There’s something odd about being called a c**t and having stuff thrown at you from the other side of a police escort from pretty much the second you step off the train and set foot in Norfolk. Like the other derbies you’ve got listed, ours will always be a 12pm kickoff seeing as the last time we played there was something like 40 arrests and hundreds brawling in the streets when the police lost control. Rumoured at the time two were stabbed as well. Grim stuff.

Obviously it’s not a patch on the likes of Celtic Rangers, Newcastle Sunderland, FGR Cheltenham for its wider interest for neutrals when we play but for both sets of fans, it’s as bitter and intense as you’ll get.

I will try to quantify my statement, and it is not to denigrate your derby, as I’m sure it is pretty intense - however it cannot compare to a same city derby. There is a lot of land between Carrie road and Portman road as an example, you are not bumping into each other.
2 teams in the same city splits it up, different areas are for one team only ( and it’s pubs ). It divides a city and families and friendships alike. You work with the opposition fans the next day and see each other as you pass in the street. It can be unbearable for the other team.
I worked in Liverpool for many years in Walton by goodison and I saw It and felt it. Same in Glasgow. It’s on another level to 2 teams in different towns and cities whereby you don’t see these people from one year to the next.
I’m sure your derby is passionate- but for me the same city is a true derby and it can not be rivalled.

We're only one of two (three?) EFL sides unbeaten at home, but I think Wycombe are going to cause us some problems, they looked half decent against Portsmouth. They're a bit of a bogey side for us, too. I can't actually remember the last time we beat them!

O'Connor struggled through the Shrewsbury game with a bad dead leg and Hopper needed stiches in his head so I'm not sure what they're like. We were also missing Mandroiu, Montsma, Benn, Bishop, Oakley-Boothe and Jackson.

I think distance plays an important part - I take your point on same city derbies, but Cheltenham and Gloucester are so close that they're practically the same as a large city. I'm working in Gloucester today for example, and I'd say the office is pretty evenly spread from 3 main areas, all within a 20 mile radius.

Now, I'm not saying Cheltenham and Gloucester would rival the Old Firm - how can it when the history isn't there in terms of football rivalries. But if both clubs had a history of, say, Championship level football, then it would be something that would be extremely intense, and going into work on a Monday wouldn't be nice for the loser.

I'd also look at how much hatred certain conurbations can have for each other - I'll never forget in 2006 I was in Portsmouth (they were playing Bolton that evening) and had a Cheltenham shirt on under my hoodie. It had come untucked and when I walked into a pub, two lads were properly eyeing me up. It was only when another came over and asked if I was brave or stupid that I realised they thought I was wearing a Southampton shirt. They recommended that I take it off and put it in my bag because some other folks might not question it. Now imagine I had been a Southampton fan...

how have you decided this by the way? we've not played them in a first team game for over 20 years and the last thing that resembled a derby resulted in loads of arrests, them smashing our stadium up and lots of damage to cars/property around burslem. (the pizza cup game against their u21s)

I think it would calm down a bit if we ended up playing them regularly, but our first derby back with them will be complete and utter chaos. policed to within an inch of its life. kick off at 8am on a sunday morning with away fans held back for 6 hours in the stadium afterwards

The 2 excellant loan players being Taylor from Stoke who controlled the backline and Anderson from Newcastle who single handily won us games. Anderson was possibly the best ever player to have played in the fourth division. Well for the last 10 years anyway. And the reason we got these players was " Joey Barton "
