how have you decided this by the way? we've not played them in a first team game for over 20 years and the last thing that resembled a derby resulted in loads of arrests, them smashing our stadium up and lots of damage to cars/property around burslem. (the pizza cup game against their u21s)

I think it would calm down a bit if we ended up playing them regularly, but our first derby back with them will be complete and utter chaos. policed to within an inch of its life. kick off at 8am on a sunday morning with away fans held back for 6 hours in the stadium afterwards

In my opinion it was not in the top bracket because, although it will be a massive deal in the city, out of it, it’s not a massive deal. I do appreciate however the passion and hatred. Especially as they decline and you are getting better.
I met a Wrexham fan last year that tried to tell me their derby with Chester is one of the most fierce in football, to him perhaps it is, but to the rest of us it ain’t. And he was a bellend as well - so i hope Chester dick them next time they meet.

yeah fair enough, i think part of it with us is that there are plenty of people who don't know port vale is in stoke due to the lack of clue in the name and the fact we haven't played them in so long.

But they're not the same as sharing the same city as another, where your neighbours, collegues, friends and even family might be your sworn enemy for the week before/after the game

The 2 excellant loan players being Taylor from Stoke who controlled the backline and Anderson from Newcastle who single handily won us games. Anderson was possibly the best ever player to have played in the fourth division. Well for the last 10 years anyway. And the reason we got these players was " Joey Barton "

Anderson was unbelievable for that level to be fair. Good to see he has been given a chance at Newcastle on the back of it too. Imagine he will get a Championship loan in January to push on. If it wasnt for his signing its safe to say we probably face Northampton this weekend.

Just that same old issue with loan players isn't it, like Butterworth with us potentially this season... it hurts when/if they go back.

That’s a myth. Liverpool fans used to sit in the Gladys years ago, since then they have got thrown out or the shit kicked out of them. Trust me - it’s not the friendly derby at all. Thats the media.

The thing about the Glasgow rivalry is that (from my perspective as someone with many Catholic relatives living in Ibrox.... Rather them than me...) the football is tangential to the underlying political/religion-informed tribal rivalry.

I don't think there's anything like it anywhere else in Great Britain, thankfully (could something similar arise in the Central Belt were, say, Airdrieonians and Albion Rovers somehow to become as huge as the Old Firm? Maybe. But even in Dundee and in Edinburgh that sort of divide is not remotely what it once was. Lots of vicious fuckers in some of the smaller towns between Glasgow and Edinburgh though).

I can see that Chester/Wrexham has flashpoints unrelated to football around it, around nationality and class. And I'd rate Southampton/Portsmouth as one of the bigger "two city" rivalries, maybe in part as they are in effect now in a shared metropolitan area, as well as being subtly different types of port city.

Otherwise I do agree that the most pained rivalries are those with day to day cheek by jowl contact.

And the El Glosico branding is just embarrassing. Not even funny as an ironic joke any more.

I think that's the same with most derbies. The East Anglians will always tell you about the vitriol between the two teams but it always looks pretty cordial from the outside. Similar with the 2 Sheffield teams.

What you have to remember with the potteries derby is that the Potteries is a deprived area, many people don't have anything to lose and are a bit rough (not me, I'm from the Staffordshire Moorlands don't you know). You're also talking about one of the most feared hooligan gangs in football (the naughty forty) from Stoke....all that mixed plus the fact that the lardies are delusional and hate it if Vale are above them and it does become a pretty vitriolic game. The Victoria ground games were among some of the most intimidating I have ever been to.

My school was in between Stoke-on-Trent and Leek (North of the city), and I'd say it was a pretty much 50/50 split at our school between Stoke and Vale fans. It still exists to a lesser extent (more Man City and Liverpool fans now).

Are your fans still with Barton? Any dissent or is everyone pretty happy? The mood from your camp seems to be pretty good and the consensus that you're having a good season. Do you think your performances have warranted a few more points and a better position?

I'd say last Friday was the first time that I've felt we've put together a complete performance. There have been patches here and there and somehow we've managed to accumulate enough points to be in 9th without ever really having a consistent run. Friday was the first time we've won 2 on the bounce this season. With a bit more consistency and less massive off days (Peterborough, Oxford), I feel we've got an outside sniff of the playoffs but I expect your Boltons, Portsmouths etc. Will splash the cash in January to seal their place in the playoffs.

We're only one of two (three?) EFL sides unbeaten at home, but I think Wycombe are going to cause us some problems, they looked half decent against Portsmouth. They're a bit of a bogey side for us, too. I can't actually remember the last time we beat them!

O'Connor struggled through the Shrewsbury game with a bad dead leg and Hopper needed stiches in his head so I'm not sure what they're like. We were also missing Mandroiu, Montsma, Benn, Bishop, Oakley-Boothe and Jackson.

At our place Mr Ainsworth was fully kitted out in leather jacket, jeans, cowboy boots, etc. Saves time on getting changed after the football I suppose; he can just go straight to the gig.

Can't disagree with the various points made but I'd like to put a "word in" for the Wrexham- Chester derby.OK it's long gone from the FL now, but, because of the England/Wales rivalry,it was the last bubble derby in the UK.ie all away fans had to assemble at their home club and were taken by coaches with a heavy police escort both on the coaches and police cars down the A483 to the opposition ground. No away fans were allowed to travel independently by car/train etc.
OK not the numbers in comparison to many other derbies but very nasty anyway

What other regional game has such a nickname . I can't think of many - perhaps Merseyside Derby.

We’ve got El Ceramico for Stoke. Ridiculous, El Classico isn’t even a derby in the first place, they are about 300 miles apart so it’s like calling each derby after a Plymouth v Carlisle tie!

I will try to quantify my statement, and it is not to denigrate your derby, as I’m sure it is pretty intense - however it cannot compare to a same city derby. There is a lot of land between Carrie road and Portman road as an example, you are not bumping into each other.
2 teams in the same city splits it up, different areas are for one team only ( and it’s pubs ). It divides a city and families and friendships alike. You work with the opposition fans the next day and see each other as you pass in the street. It can be unbearable for the other team.
I worked in Liverpool for many years in Walton by goodison and I saw It and felt it. Same in Glasgow. It’s on another level to 2 teams in different towns and cities whereby you don’t see these people from one year to the next.
I’m sure your derby is passionate- but for me the same city is a true derby and it can not be rivalled.

On the flip side, we don’t see each other other than on matchday two days a year (when we’re in the same league obviously). so the hatred can build up.

Can a family that is split really hate each other when they’re brothers let’s say? Or if they work with each other every day of the year but suddenly on matchday it’s hatred? I’m not so sure.

Very true...spent some time in Scotland and the Glasgow "rivalry" is pure poison, nothing less, I am so glad that it is largely absent from the game in England...from time to time people come up with a hair brained idea that the old firm should join our league system, my response is always an absolute no, those two come with considerable baggage and we do not need it. The rivalry in Dundee and Edinburgh can be pretty fierce around derby games but other than that the two sets of fans generally co-exist pretty peacefully...definitely not the case with the Glasgow teams.
