Some of us have even beaten Barcelona in European competition. Twice.

Some bloke in a suit had to pay for them. They stood there looking gormless by the till. I thought about paying for them, then I thought fuck em.

The original AIC was created off the back of us (and QPR in 1967) winning the league Cup as a third tier side and we weren't allowed to compete in the Fairs Cup. We were 'compensated' with a two legged match against Roma who had won the Coppa Italia that season. That in turn spawned the first AIC in 1970, containing 6 English sides and 6 Italian sides. Split into groups. The final was then contested between the highest performing sides from each country. We beat Napoli 3-0 in the final, held in Italy. (Abandoned after 79 minutes due to crowd trouble, the Italians started to throw parts of the stadium onto the pitch!!)

Blackpool beat Bologna in 71, Roma beat Blackpool in 72 and Newcastle beat Fiorentina in 73. It was then sacked off due to lack of interest, but reintroduced in 76 as a semi professional tournament and then in 92-93 re-established in the guise most fans remember nowadays. Initially it was intriguing but I remember crowds were very poor. I went to a game at the County Ground where the ground seemed sparse (I just checked it was Brentford in 92 in front of 3,819 paying spectators).

Its a shame the rise of Ryanair didnt happen in time for it... these unknown places in Italy you can fly to such as Ancona or Perugia were in it and could probably have got there for a tenner each way!

I've just realised this is the Saturday match day thread which has gone wildly off kilter. Also completely irrelevant to us as we're in the fantastic league below.

Should be a good crowd of potentially 12 or 13k which would be quite good for us.

I think we've got to hope that Wednesday come with an attitude of just turning up and winning. If they play anywhere near their best, they'll win comfortably.

My one ray of hope is that I don't rate Darren Moore at all. He comes across as a bit thick...if he was manager of Burton I would have marked them down as relegation certainties at the beginning of the season. Let's face it, anyone on this board would be able to get top 6 with this Wednesday squad but I'm not sure whether Moore has the nous if things start going badly.

Don’t agree with a lot of things you write about us but I do with this. Whilst I’m sure he’s not as thick as his “errrmm yeah” interviews come across, we do lack a clear style of play or a Plan B.

Another concern is for a man who spent most of his career in the top 2 divisions as a centre half, it’s worrying he’s not been able to make us really solid at the back despite having 3 transfer windows.

Tykes at home this weekend, one of the greatest ever centre forwards came from Barnsley. A certain Mr Tommy Taylor signed by Man Utd for £29999. Michael Parkinson and Dickie Bird I believe all lived in the same area, so you Barnsley fans is that right ? Expect them to bring around 1000 so that should swell the gate nicely. I dont think we have ever beaten them at home, we've won away at their place but everything points to another draw ( this would be an excellent result ). 1-1

Ironically big Dave used to play for us. Was a decent defender back in the day but never struck me as manager material.

Our record was the longest in Europe for over 40 years, beaten by AZ Almaar who were eventually beaten in 2007 by Everton.

Ours is 31 home games. One of the most recent being Inter Milan in 2001. A record to be proud of as a club.
