Should the UK re-instate the death penalty?

I know we had this a few times on TFF, but there's new people here and some others may have changed their minds.
I was listening to a debate on the radio the other night about this in the context of the Boston bomber being given the death sentence.

I'm opposed to the death penalty and take the view that if even one person is wrongly executed that is unacceptable. I also don't think it acts as a deterrent and that it is morally reprehensible for a state to take a life.

What justification can there be for spending millions from the public purse to keep them locked up for the rest of their life.

No. The state should never have the power to take someone's life, no matter how reprehensible the crime may be. There have been innocent people who have been executed, which as said above should be enough to not reinstate it.

Also, for me a life behind bars in a shitty cell thinking about what they have done is a far worse punishment than a painless death by injection (unless they fuck it up as with recently), or a short death by electric chair.

I do think that we should stop affording as many rights as we do to certain prisoners, not those who have genuinely just done wrong and made mistakes, but those who have justified a life sentence who deserve to spend their lives behind bars, I believe they should be made as miserable as possible, and be made to live their lives like that.

True but cases are extremely rare and I have faith in our Justice system over the Americans.

Yet at the last count it was costing the taxpayer about £400,000 a year to keep him in misery. That's nearly £25 million in the time he's been locked away. Big price for keeping someone unhappy.

In the USA it costs a lot more money to execute a convict than it does to lock them up for life.

Unfortunately even when so called definitive proof has been gained mistakes have still been made. You can't use the law to differentiate between 'We're really sure kill him' to 'We're pretty sure so don't kill him'.

Which rights in particular would you like to see taken away from prisoners?

Dependent upon the severity of the crime, I think some should spend time in solitary confinement for a set amount of time in order to stew over what they have done. Not to be allowed visits from family whatsoever. No television within their cells, or any other privileges that come with that. And the maximum amount of time allowed to be locked in their cell increased from 21 days up to 3 months for bad behavior.

I would also like to see repeat offenders treated more and more harshly each time, including the above being made stricter each time they spend time in prison, and the time spent there increased each time they commit a crime, rather than the same sentence being handed out each time a crime is committed.

Considering people who are free cannot even get assisted suicide at present. No. And even if that is actually allowed now which I do believe it should be, then I believe a prisoner should forfeit that right.

Except you can't ever get to that. DNA evidence isn't infallible.
