I have not been following Lincoln's transfer dealings, but if they are relying essentially on last years team they will probably find it harder than they expect. If, however, they have bought some seasoned league 2 pros, especially in the back four, they may do well.

So imps how different is this squad from last season's?

Difference between Cheltenham and Lincoln is that Lincoln have players with potential that have interest from higher up. Cheltenhams players were top end of Conference level at best. Not saying Lincoln's are all League 2 standard but Raggett, Woodyard and Green definitely are, Knott, Arnold and Habergham probably are. Not sure about the others, especially Farman and Rhead.

Chesterfield are putting their hopes down to a striker that has scored 5 goals in the last 3 seasons. Don't know about the quality of the rest of their players but having the same defence that got you relegated in L1 maybe isn't a good idea?

We tried having the same defence that got us relegated in League One and it saw us in a relegation scrap...

Luckily we've got 2 left over, Hird and Evatt, who are pretty good. Others have been replaced. Evatt is older than god now I think but he's never been quick and is a good guy to have. Hird is good. My main worry is the midfield that still needs adding to, but the squad looks to be much better than last season, fingers crossed

Not massively different yet but we're working on it. The squad players have all left (Hawkridge, Muldoon, Power, Angol) and we'll be replacing them with league quality if all goes to plan to add to the two most impressive incomings so far Green and Maguire-Drew

Newport were dog shit 5 years ago what's your point?
10 guys last season scored 15+ last season and you think Rhead will do likewise next year. In cloud cuckoo land sunshine.

As it stands, 8 are the same.

Squad players have gone, we're just short on numbers full stop at the minute so no-one really knows if anymore of last season's first XI will end up dropping out and end up being squad players.

Despite predictions being made, we're no-where near being able to have a decent guess either way.

You're just utterly deluded if you think Matt Rhead is a better target man than Chris O'grady, simple as that

The 2 shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence.

O'Grady was playing in the championship last season. Rhead wasn't good enough for League 2 last time he was here. His game may have improved now, but no way is he even close to O'Grady.

Listen O'Grady's a great signing for this division he'll have a good season no doubt. But Rhead's gunna be up for it this year mark my words. Lets just see how he gets on but a lot of you are gunna be eating your words! (Cue Rhead eating joke).

Evatt & Rhead and O'Grady & Raggett will be worth the admission fee alone. Good old fashioned tussles.

Alright, just to put this shitheap of a discussion to bed.

No-one knows how good/bad Lincoln will be. I personally think Rhead is better than he looks but he's hardly Pele. Matt Green is overrated. If Woodyard and Raggett were as genuinely good as the amount of Lincoln fan jizz suggests they are, then they would've left in the Summer. And if they are that good, then money talks and Lincoln have enough money to make the whole of this discussion moot and will rightfully be favourites to go up with such a big budget.

Can we get this love-in done now? It's boring and the poor attempts at trolling from Chesterfield and Lincoln fans is appalling.

Anyway for us... I think we're about there in terms of recruitment. I know we've still got an offer on the table for Semedo but him joining is yet to be seen, we're all hopeful! However, if he doesn't sign I expect us to line up like this come the start of the season...

Anyon / Lee
Wiseman - Evatt(c) - Hird
Barry - Reed - Rowley - McCourt - JBW
O'Grady - Dennis/Ugwu
The squad has the right balance and looks equip to challenge for top 7 at the least so definately looking forward to it!

Think we look much stronger than we did 2 weeks ago. Almost confident we will compete

Lots of people are saying this all of a sudden, but I'm struggling to find too many, if any, posts along those lines.

Don't recall any Cheltenham fans saying it last year either (there may have been one who was active for all of about a week), but that seemed to stick for some reason.

There was one who was incredibly vocal about it, but also there were very few others who outright didn't agree with him. Plenty were like 'Well we won't walk it, but with Johnson as manager and Holman upfront we will definitely be there or thereabouts' etc. There's a reason it stuck and it wasn't just because one person ran with it.

I lived in the town and can tell you almost every fan, not all, I spoke to thought they would be in the top 5 easy... Didn't have a clue did they, one of the worst teams I've seen win the conference. And they all hate me for pointing out how shit they were and still are haha

Still time for Raggett to leave.

Woodyard, on signing his new deal, said that he thought a jump from NL to L1 wouldn't be worth the risk for a few more pound notes and he wanted to test himself at L2 in a team and club he knows, knowing full well he'll play every week in week out and under a manager he's been with for 5 years or so at different clubs.

Not *all* footballers are money driven. There are the occasional ones who look a little more long term.

If we sign Paul Dixon (likely), and Zak Mills gets injured, our defence could line up like this:

Ben Davies (36)-Danny Collins (37)-Nathan Clarke (33)-Paul Dixon (30). Gives us an average age of 34. Mills is 25 and takes the average down to 31.

Would anyone have an older defence in this division?

I think we're looking like that at the minute. LB Paul Dixon not signed but apparently talks are ongoing, we'll need another CB who can cover the left too. Some players like Osborne and Berrett will be played out wide so I don't think we'll bring in another winger. We probably won't be playing 4-4-2 either.

Overall I think we have a squad solid enough to keep us safe but not one that excites me enough to think we'll come close to challenging. If Osborne and Jones can continue their fine form from last season and Dembele becomes the real deal, then who knows. I still think we need a quality striker before we can push on.

Don't think we'll be playing 4-4-2. Didn't on Saturday and I still think we're a bit top heavy in CM so we've got to put them somewhere. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if it was similar to your team above, with Jones playing slightly deeper.

GK: Rob Lainton

RB: Lawrie Wilson
CB: Anthony Kay
CB: Nathan Smith
LB: Need to Sign (Kelly can fill in but not expected to be a regular this season)

LW: Christian Montano
CM: Danny Pugh
CM: Anthony De Freitas
RW: Marcus Harness

FW: Tom Pope
FW: Rekeil Pyke/Tyrone Barnett

That's our strongest XI at the moment but still expecting at least an attacking midfielder and left back to come in as first choice. Get a decent left back in and the defence will look fairly strong all be it a little short on height.

A little over 2 weeks til the season starts and Carlisle have 2 strikers signed to the club, none of whom I expect to reach double figures.

Now unless we've somehow turned the woeful mess of a back line from last season into a solid defensive unit over the summer, we're going to be in a relegation battle.

Last season we had goals throughout our team that got our defence out of the shit on numerous occasions. This season... fuck me i dread to think what is going to happen.

Reminiscent of Andy Morrell's Wrexham's Dads Army of 3 years or so back.

Yeah, good side, that.

Slade's got a lot of work to get up to that kind of average age, though!

Well we was ready... But now one of our best signings this summer is out for a couple of months after rolling his ankle, big Binnom-Williams, which means we're looking weak on the left side! Donohue has filled in their before but I just don't trust him enough defensively, so a short term loan (If their still possible after the rule changes) at LWB would be perfect.

I also still want us to sign that midfield enforcer in Semedo, but after watching Reed, McCourt and Dimaio last night they impressed me so it wouldn't be the end of the world if we didn't sign him... Would love him to come though
