It's that time of the year where there are lots of comings and goings.

In our case, it's neither - but how is your squad and potential starting XI coming along?

This thread may seem a tad bit tedious, but I'm bored. Very bored.

Currently, we can barely field a competitive starting XI. There is no transfer news, as such, and the only speculation/information we do have is trialists, and plenty of them. Foreign trialists. (Poor mans Vale).

Goalkeepers:
Joe Cracknell

We're currently looking at a German who was at Bayern Munich 3 years ago and Sam Slocombe at Oxford (amongst others)

Defenders:
Stephen Darby
Rory McArdle
James Meredith
Nathanial Knight-Percival
Nathan Clarke

NKP seems okay on paper, but the rest are solid as foook. Darbs, Rory and Mezza have played together for 4 years now, accumulating in excess of 50 cleans sheets. We're due another solid CB signing.

Midfield:
Filipe Morais
Paul Anderson
Nicky Law
Mark Marshall
Tony McMahon

With Law being the only CM we have, a lot of attention to detail is going into finding the right players for this area. Morais and Anderson are like new signings, given they were both out for most of last season due to broken legs. They're brilliant wingers for this league IMO.

Strikers:
James Hanson
Billy Clarke
Reece Webb-Forster

Our biggest problem last season was not scoring enough goals, it ultimately cost us in the play-offs. Hanson could be great, Clarke notched 14 the season before, but to be challenging, you need a 20+ goal-a-season man, a player we haven't had since Nahki Wells' departure. McCall needs to seriously address this, and some money needs to be spent. I was hoping Hanson would be sold or something, but McCall first signed him in 2008, and has recently praised him, so looks like he's a starter again next season, of which limits our play IMO.

Starting XI currently;

GK: Joe Cracknell

RB: Stephen Darby
CB: Rory McArdle
CB: Nat Knight-Percival
LB: James Meredith

RCM: Filipe Morais
CM: Nicky Law
LCM: Paul Anderson

CAM: Billy Clarke

ST: James Hanson
ST: ???

Another 9-10 signings expected, so no where near the finished article - thank god.

Over to yous.

In Baldock and Walsh we have two of, in my opinion, the best defenders in the league. Joe Walsh is bloody brilliant, I rate him very highly. Oxford fans know how good Baldock is, did well in the championship for us. Jury is out on Downing, wait and see how well/bad he does for us. Some good players in there, and highly rated youngsters. Need to get a few more wingers in as we only have the two: Bowditch and Powell. Powell who was barely used last season, important season for him.

Goalkeepers:
Ben Alnwick
Mark Tyler
Dion Curtis-Henry

I would expect DCH to go on loan. Alnwick is as good as you'll get at this level, and despite his age, Tyler still has class.

Defenders:
Michael Smith
Hayden White
Michael Bostwick
Jack Baldwin
Ryan Tafazoli
Ricardo Santos
Andrew Hughes

Need another left back but that's a solid bunch, minus Santos who is absolute garbage. Callum Elder will make that very solid.

Midfield:
Marcus Maddison
Jon Taylor
Jermaine Anderson
Callum Chettle
Adil Nabi
Chris Forrester
Gwion Edwards
Leonardo Da Silva Lopes
Brad Inman

Again, a solid lot. Maddison, Anderson and Forrester would get in to any side in this league, so it's just who gets the other spot, really. Good backups though.

Strikers:
Lee Angol
Shaquille Coulthirst
Tom Nichols
Aaron Williams
Joe Gormley

Angol and Nichols are exciting and i hope they can do well. Coulthirst showed glimpses so it's a big year for him. Gormley who knows? His knee injury last year didn't really give him a chance.

Starting XI:

Alnwick

Smith
Tafazolli
Baldwin
New LB/Hughes

Maddison

Sorted there Alnwick is a decent keeper at this level and Boot highly rated youth product.

DF:

Kiko
Ben Purkiss
Adam Yates
Nathan Smith
Kjell Knops
Remie Streete
Calvin Mac-Intosch

Another left back and a centre half (British experienced) would do here, Streete and Smith are highly rated. Purkiss is a decent right back and the Dutch pair will be looking to start. Kiko is highly rated depends how he adapts. Girls will love him!

MF:

Paulo Tavares
Anthony Grant
Michael Brown
Sam Foley
Quentin Periera
Anthony De Freitas
Sam Kelly
Ryan Lloyd

Strongest part of the team again it would seem, Tavares looks the stand out foreign signing and him Grant, Brown and Foley provide excellent options in the central area. Foley can play out wide too along with the French pair. Unsure on how these two will perform though. Quentin seems to have done little so far. Two decent wingers or keep Andoh and sign one more would complete the midfield... See what Smurf is sorting in Monte Carlo!

FW:

JJ Hooper
Carlos Saleiro
Regino Cicila
Dan Turner

Hooper started to come through last year and a huge season for him, Saleiro has played for Sporting Lisbon and should have something about him and Cicila is 6'5 (Should cure the problem of height up top at least) Need to add a couple more hit men with the ex Blackburn lad on trial Anton Forester.

Few youth lads too.

Currently id start

GK:

Jordan Archer
David Forde
Tom King

Archer is exceptional at this level, Forde is a good backup option and we have a few England youth keeper's in the younger squads.

DF:

Shaun Cummings
Joe Martin
Tony Craig
Sid Nelson
Byron Webster
Mahlon Romeo
Noah Chesmain
Shaun Hutchinson

Signed Hutchinson to replace the sadly leaving Mark Beevers. Sounds a similar type of player so hopefully will quickly get a partnership going with Webster who improved hugely last year. Martin is a bit ropey but just about did enough last year to keep a place. Romeo came in at Christmas and was majestic before getting stupidly sent off and missing the play-offs. I'd look at a new left back, but I suspect Harris will go with Martin and hope Chesmain comes through. It's as good a defence as most at this level.

MF:

Shaun Williams
Fred Onyedinma
Shane Ferguson
Ben Thompson
Jimmy Abdou
Greg Wylde
David Worrall

It's decent, but lacking in depth particularly in the middle where Thompson is vital for us. Jimmy and Williams are competent but I reckon we'll see another CM sign up before season begins, unless one of the kids (Kyron Farrell?) steps up a'la Thompson last year. Wingers are unknown quantities having signed Wylde and Worral this summer, but both were well liked at the previous teams. Ferguson's versatility might see him at left back. Good first XI, but lacking depth after that.

FW:

Lee Gregory
Steve Morison
Aiden O'Brien
Jamie Philpot

Two exceptional players in Moro and Gregory (assuming he's still here). Both good for 20+ goals a season if avoiding injury. O'Brien started last year very well but faded after Christmas. Philpot well liked but untried by Harris. Again, I reckon we'll see an addition here, probably on loan.

A few more kids sprinkled around that lot too.

Currently id start

Archer

Romeon
Hutchinson
Webster
Martin

Worrall
Thompson
Abdou
Ferguson

Morison
Gregory

That's good enough for top 6, IMO.

I fancy Posh to do well this season, good squad at this level.

Looks like they might have another big money gem in Lee Angol and Maddison is a player.

Think we're looking for another shot-stopper to potentially overthrow Mildy as first choice, which is wise as we need someone a bit younger if we look beyond this season. Mildy is solid and played really well when he reclaimed the jersey midway through last season, but he's getting on a bit and Darrell wants someone a bit younger.

Defenders:
Lee Brown
Mark McChrystal
Tom Lockyer
Peter Hartley
James Clarke
Danny Leadbitter

Our starting back four are very solid and we have a few youth players in the squad too, so numbers-wise we're okay in this area. I can see us signing another first choice central defender who can play in a four and a three, as McChrystal hasn't got the legs to do that and Darrell is partial to rotating formations during the season.

Midfielders:
Cristian Montano
Chris Lines
Lee Mansell
Stuart Sinclair
Liam Lawrence
Byron Moore
Billy Bodin
Jake Gosling
Ollie Clarke

A decent bunch of midfielders. Our wide options are very good, in my opinion, and whilst I do like our central midfielders I am concerned about our lack of legs. Neither Mansell or Lawrence are particularly quick and whilst Linesy is he is neither a goalscorer or a holding midfielder, so I think Darrell will sign another CM with some kind of League One experience.

Strikers:
Rory Gaffney
Jermaine Easter
Ellis Harrison
Luke James

Happy to go into the season with all four at the club but there is no doubt we will have another in place by the start of the season. We are still waiting to hear from 28 goal man Matty Taylor as to whether he's going to sign his new deal and if he doesn't, which seems likely, we will sign somebody else. We are clearly prepared to pay decent wages to Taylor, so if he declines his offer that money will be used to get another goalscorer in. Admittedly we'd be unlikely to sign a proven 25+ goals man, but we'd certainly be able to get someone with some pedigree.

Considering we are new to League One, Smith is our No.1 although will probably be sold in excess for 1m (hopefully) sooner (probably Jan) rather than later. Cornell average backup from the reviews of him, hopefully won't be No.1 when Smith goes.

Defenders:
Brendan Moloney
Aaron Phillips
Rod McDonald
Gabriel Zakuani
Zander Diamond
Ryan Cresswell
David Buchanan
Raheem Hanley

Was the weak part of our squad last season, if we had one. Hopefully Concrete Rod steps up to full potential. Moloney and Buchanan will go well a step up, and we have signed back-ups in the full back positions. Looking forward to seeing both of them get a chance if needed.

Midfielders:
John-Joe O'Toole
Joel Byrom
Jason Taylor
Jak McCourt
Shaun McWilliams

Lawson D'Ath
Alfie Potter

This is currently the big debate. 2 new quality wingers need to be signed to replace the Hallowed Holmes and the under appreciated Nicky Adams. Not really a smidge of a rumour. Although Page and Chairman have said the loan market is where they are looking. Hopefully they have some League one and above experience. Centre mids are complete. McCourt needs to wow in pre season and coming off the bench for people think we have signed a good replacement for Danny Rose. John-Joe to boss the league again!

Forwards:
Marc Richards
Alex Revell
Sam Hoskins

One more Striker to sign. Hopefully strong and fast in the Lyle Taylor mold with a good goal ratio. I still think we need an extra player as Richards is only getting older and injuries need to be kept to a minimum which I doubt. Looking forward to seeing Hoskins in league 1

Starting XI

Smith

Moloney (Phillips could start as a Page signing)
Zakuani
McDonald
Buchanan

O'Toole
Byrom

D'Ath
Hoskins
Revell

Richards

(Front four could easily be anything with 3/4 players to come)

Will be interesting to see if the deals for the Monaco lads come off and I think that if we want Forrester we are going to have to move quickly but all in all I think the best we can say is that we've put a squad together that is going to keep people guessing even as we get into the early stages of the season

Goalies:
Josh Lillis
Johny Diba Musanga
Steve Collis (GK coach)

Josh is first choice and a good goalie. Johny Diba is highly rated and came through our youth teams. Steve Collis may warm the bench in an emergency.

Defenders:
Joe Rafferty (RB)
Andy Cannon (RB)
Harrison McGahey (CB)
Niall Canavan (CB)
Jim McNulty (CB/LB)
Scott Tanser (LB)

We need another CB. Currently on trial are Marcus Holness (steady enough for us five years ago, but more recently released by Tranmere in the Conference) and River Humphreys (Runcorn Linnets, won a competition for a month's professional trial). Did somebody say that Bury want rid of Peter Clarke?? :-)

Midfield:
Jamie Allen (CM)
Matt Lund (CM)
Callum Camps (CM/CAM)
Donal McDermott (CAM/Winger)
Olly Rathbone (CM)
Peter Vincenti (Winger)
Nat Mendez-Laing (Winger)
James Hooper (AM)

Plenty of options there; potentially very strong.

Forwards:
Ian Henderson
Calvin Andrew
Joe Bunney

Three good players, but more cover/options needed. Nathan Eccleston (ex Blackpool, and an undeerwhelming loan spell with us four years ago) and Harry Pratt (ex Dale youth) are apparently on trial.

Starting XI: (4-2-3-1)

Cannot see this changing too much at the moment:
GK: Amos, Muller, Jaaskelainen
DF: Moxey, Dervite, Osede, Finney, Beevers, Wilson, Holding
MF: Vela, Pratley, Walker, Taylor, Spearing, Clayton, Davies, Trotter, Twardzik
Str: Woolery, Clough, Madine, Proctor, Palaner, Wilkinson
Those in bold would be our starting 11

Released our back up Glenn Morris in the summer as he made a total of zero starts last season, so gone with Hadler (youth) as our back up instead. Nelson is what he is - fantastic 95% of the time but will then let one slip through his fingers to remind us all that he's a league one keeper.

Defence
Max Ehmer
Deji Oshilaja
Bradley Garmston
Ryan Jackson
Mitchell Dickenson

This is clearly our weakest area. First choice 4 is excellent, but we only have a youth teamer in Dickenson as back up. Work needed here.

Midfield
Josh Wright
Aaron Morris
Bradley Dack
Jake Hessenthaler
Emanuel Osadebe
Lee Martin
Mark Byrne
Scott Wagstaff
Billy Knott
Darren Oldaker

Weakest area last season becomes the strongest this time around. Even if/when Dack goes, we have plenty of strength in depth.

Forwards
Cody McDonald
Luke Norris
Rory Donnelly
Joe Quigley
Greg Cundle
Elliot List

Plenty of vibrancy and youthfulness in our strikeforce, but only McDonald who you would consider anything other than 'promising'.

First XI as is:

Nelson
Jackson - Ehmer - Oshilaja - Garmston
Wright - Morris
Wagstaff - Dack - Martin
McDonald
Although as Dack will leave, Knott to take his place.

That's good enough for top 6, IMO.

Agree with your squad appraisal but we need to move on from this shape if we are going to progress long-term, IMO.

Abdou should only start if Williams is not available, and even then we should be looking for an additional option in that area or even an upgrade on Williams.

Martin is steady but having him and Ferguson on the same flank basically nullifies any attacking threat on our left-side. I would move Ferguson back into a LB/LWB role personally.

Love Morison and he is a magnificent player for this level, but if we are going to use him as a target-man, as we did for the final 1/4 of last season, then I'd rather we play Aiden or Fred as a supporting striker instead. That brand of longball was excruciating to watch.

Really looking forward to seeing Twardek, Mbulu, Philpot, Chesmain and maybe Farrell break into the side this year. Thompson and Romeo should also go from strength to strength. Big year for Aiden and Fred to prove their undoubted quality.

Archer must have improved 10 fold than when he was with us. Decent shot stopper but not very convincing in other areas.

In the two years he's been with us he's only played 14 times. When he's been on loan he's at fleetwood and Crewe he's also done poor. Shame really as I would have liked to have seen him given more of a chance. He needs to move on though just for him, it isn't helping his career being here.

Plus we have first year pro's Jordan Sangha, Mazi Kouyhar, Kory Roberts and Rory Oliver. We also have Isaiah Osbourne back in so he can prove his fitness and try to earn an extension.

Quite clear where we need to strengthen though. We have very little in the way of forward options. At the very least we need some wingers a striker and a backup left back.

Our squad in short - lacking wingers/forwards, very inexperienced, relying on youngsters/key players.

We need 4 more signings, 1 to replace Bradshaw, 2 wingers minimum and possiblyy another versatile full back.

That side would finish bottom 6.

According to our new chief scout, we're due 3 more squad players and 5 key, big signings.

We'll see.

Our squad in short - lacking wingers/forwards, very inexperienced, relying on youngsters/key players.

We need 4 more signings, 1 to replace Bradshaw, 2 wingers minimum and possiblyy another versatile full back.

That side would finish bottom 6.
With Bradshaw I think it would finish lower mid table, like 16th or something. Without him you're correct, bottom 6 as it stands.

No signs that's Jordan Archer is moving on? Thought he was the best keeper in the division last season.
Everton interest but not heard anything in a few weeks. He's our best player, so we need to make sure he stays for another season at least.

In the two years he's been with us he's only played 14 times. When he's been on loan he's at fleetwood and Crewe he's also done poor. Shame really as I would have liked to have seen him given more of a chance. He needs to move on though just for him, it isn't helping his career being here.

Fleetwood and Crewe are and were poor sides in the division.
You should look at his loan spell with us and see what he can do in a decent side, very good finisher.

Goalkeepers

Luke Daniels
Joe Anyon

Apart from a few slip ups early in the season, Luke Daniels was excellent for us last season and was a big part we conceded very little and kept a lot of clean sheets. Anyon proved solid back up when he played last season.

Defenders

Jordan Clarke
Scott Wiseman
David Mirfin
Murray Wallace
Charlie Goode
Jack King
Conor Townsend
Scott Laird

Probably our strongest position. We didn't concede many goals last season due to the excellent back four we put together during the second half of the season. We also have two solid FB back ups, only problem is our CB back ups with Charlie Goode being inexperienced and Jack King being fucking horrendous.

Midfielders

Hakeeb Adelakun
Luke Williams
Josh Morris
Sam Mantom
Steven Dawson
Neal Bishop
Jamie Ness
Duane Holmes

We have quite a few CM's but only one really out and out winger, we're relying on Adelakun to carry his end of season form and confidence into this season.

Strikers

Paddy Madden
Tom Hopper
Kevin Van Veen
Kyle Wooton

We've got Paddy so we're alright, even if he is a skinhead now. Tom Hopper is excellent too.

Team (4-4-2)

We're a bit thin on the ground but signings so far have been promising.

Keepers - Tommy Lee, Ryan Fulton (season long loan from Liverpool)
Defender - Evatt, Raglan, Jones, Maguire, MgGinn, Hird, O'Neil, Humphreys
Midfielders - Noble, Martinez, O'Shea, Aryibi, Gardener, Donohue, Banks, Mitchell
Strikers - Evans, Ebanks-Blake, Dennis, Simons

Not sure who i've missed if any. Would expect us to add to that in midfield + another keeper. Still need a back up Right Back too.
