You forgot Jon Nolan.
Ah knew it was something like that. Scrap Noble for Nolan then! My bad.

Kristian Dennis any good then? Certainly can't knock his goalscoring record..

Yeah he's a good finisher and runs all day, scores all types of goals aswell, he's definitely got the attributes to do well at that level it just depends if you can keep him fit and get the best out of him

Goalkeepers:
Ben Alnwick
Mark Tyler
Dion Curtis-Henry

I would expect DCH to go on loan. Alnwick is as good as you'll get at this level, and despite his age, Tyler still has class.

Defenders:
Michael Smith
Hayden White
Michael Bostwick
Jack Baldwin
Ryan Tafazoli
Ricardo Santos
Andrew Hughes

Need another left back but that's a solid bunch, minus Santos who is absolute garbage. Callum Elder will make that very solid.

Midfield:
Marcus Maddison
Jon Taylor
Jermaine Anderson
Callum Chettle
Adil Nabi
Chris Forrester
Gwion Edwards
Leonardo Da Silva Lopes
Brad Inman

Again, a solid lot. Maddison, Anderson and Forrester would get in to any side in this league, so it's just who gets the other spot, really. Good backups though.

Strikers:
Lee Angol
Shaquille Coulthirst
Tom Nichols
Aaron Williams
Joe Gormley

Angol and Nichols are exciting and i hope they can do well. Coulthirst showed glimpses so it's a big year for him. Gormley who knows? His knee injury last year didn't really give him a chance.

Starting XI:

Alnwick

Smith
Tafazolli
Baldwin
New LB/Hughes

Maddison
Taylor
Anderson
Forrester

Angol
Nichols

Woah wait, you've signed Hayden White? When did that happen?!

He's comfortably the worst footballer we've had in the last 6 or so seasons (toss up between him and Smith probably). No idea how he's managed to not get laughed out of the profession yet.

Our First XI would be

Etheridge

Edwards
O'Connor
McCarthy
Henry

Chambers
Cuvelier

Moussa
Oztumer
Morris

Bradshaw

4-2-3-1

That looks a very good starting XI. Just a shame we will lose Bradshaw and possibly Henry before September arrives.

The 'squad' still needs much work though however. A cover left back, another winger, another centre forward if not 2.

Is he the black full back from Blackpool (and Bolton)?

Finally, someone agrees with me...he is one of the worst footballers I've ever seen.

Which is why we loaned him to Blackpool and then got shut in the summer

He'll be playing next to Ricardo Santos. He'll look like Maldini next to him, regardless.

Generally, there does always seem to be a side that struggles the season after failing in the play-offs. Chesterfield and Peterborough in recent seasons.

We're still yet to sign our 'key players', so our season depends on that, and solely that.

We'll know more at the end of the month, but both Walsall and City have practically started from scratch - could go either way.

Our season will come down to 3 key factors.

1: Who we replace Bradshaw with.
2: How quickly the new players gel together.
3: How Jon Whitney performs as manager.

If there is a positive result from all 3 then we could be in for a shot of the play offs again. If 2 go well then we will be mid table. If only 1 goes well then it will be a long hard season.

I'm actually pretty happy with who we have signed so far, on paper, at least a couple are of a similar standard to the players from last season.

Moussa/Cuvelier/Oztumer are big signings for us, Edwards looks decent.

Just a shame we couldn't have kept a couple from last season. Demetriou and Forde would have been lovely.

We are in the Oldham bracket of completely unpredictable.

We look to have cover in most positions now, apart from up front where we have three experienced strikers (Mangan, Leitch-Smith and Barnett) plus a couple of kids.

The situation with Tyrone Barnett remains unclear. Last week it seemed he was leaving on a free transfer, possibly to Southend, but that looks to have fallen through.

Like last year Mellon is now is a position where he is at the ceiling of his budget whilst waiting for players offered contracts, Halstead and Wesolowski, to decide if they are staying, but still playing them in pre-season games. Plus trying to offload the transfer listed Wellens.

We can't currently sign anyone unless someone leaves which has resulted in the end of our interest in the Hitchin Town trialist Kane Smith as there is no scope to sign him. A far from ideal position to be in at this stage when we very much need to strengthen our forward options with a quality addition.

So, seven new signings so far - and 5 more 'marquee' players yet to come in.

Three bids were tabled last week, one accepted and confirmed as Romain Vincelot (£80k), which I'm relatively happy with. The other two are for a striker and defender, according to a source on our forum.

McCall has highlighted key areas where we still need to improve, so we're still yet to sign 2 CM, a winger, a striker and another CB.

We're still a little short on numbers, IMO, but we're getting there.

GK: Colin Doyle/ Rouven Sattelmaier

RB: Stephen Darby
CB: Rory McArdle
CB: Nat Knight-Percival
LB: James Meredith

DCM: Romain Vincelot/Timothee Dieng

LCM: Nicky Law/Paul Anderson
RCM: Filipe Morais/Mark Marshall

CAM: Billy Clarke

ST: Jordy Hiwula
ST: James Hanson

I look forward to seeing how well 5 marquees do in this league.

If I remember correctly, that's approximately how many Crawley used as stands in their ground. Didn't turn out too well for them.

Unless of course you've used your magic calculator to predict the number, then it's probably more likely to be one marquee, and an FBI conspiracy to cover up the other four.

Current starting XI:

GK:Mark Oxley/Ted Smith,
Def: Jason Demetriou, Adam Thompson, Adam Barrett, Ben Coker
Mid: Luke O'Neill/Jermaine McGlashan, Ryan Leonard, Anthony Wordsworth/Michael Timlin/, Stephen McLaughlin
Att: Simon Cox, Nile Ranger/David Mooney

Not a bad starting XI that should comfortably hold it's own in this league. Probably 2 of the best full backs in the league, still need a centre half though, a replacement for the ageing Barrett. in CM I would like to keep Wordsworth fit, showed glimpses of what he can do last season but just wasn't fit all the time, Timlin is a bit past it now for me and also struggles for fitness . Luke O'Neill looked very shaky when RB last season but has been very good on the wing in pre-season. I'd like another striker with David Mooney being shit and Nile Ranger's record it would prob be best to get another striker in but happy with Cox as a signing, could be a real coup.

Seeing as we're 11 days away from the start of the new season (!)..

GK:
David Martin (#1)
Charlie Burns

Martin is a quality keeper for this level, but has been picking up injuries here and there last few seasons. Not very convinced by Burns as a backup, ideally we'd want another, more experienced keeper but we have bigger priorities.

DF:
George Baldock
Joe Walsh
Paul Downing
George Williams
Dean Lewington

George Baldock and George Williams potentially two of the best full backs in L1 this season. Dean Lewington is very solid at this level. Downing played most of Walsall's games last season. Joe Walsh was very good last season and a top CB. We do need another CB to replace McFadzean, but generally happy with our defence which was the best of the bottom 8 sides in the Championship last season. Plus we have some good young defenders coming through like Oran Jackson and Callum Brittain.

MF:
Ed Upson
Darren Potter
Samir Carruthers
Dean Bowditch
Daniel Powell
Ben Reeves
Giorgio Rasulo
Connor Furlong

Some decent League 1 standard players there. Carruthers, Reeves and Potter stand out in particular and will be in the starting XI most weeks. Upson has impressed in pre-season. We still need a couple of wingers though.

FW:
Nicky Maynard
Simon Church
Tom Hitchcock

Nicky Maynard, I'm hoping, will be excellent in League 1. Was our top scorer in the Championship last season and has performed well at League 1 level before. I expect 15+ goals from him. Church will probably leave. Hitchcock, I have no faith at all in and has never looked good enough IMO. Think we need at least another striker for the new season.

Starting XI as it stands:

Martin

Lewington
Walsh
Downing
Baldock

Potter
Upson

Carruthers
Reeves
Bowditch

Maynard

What it should be:

Martin

Lewington/Williams
Walsh
[New CB]
Baldock

Potter
Upson

[New winger]
Reeves
[New winger]

Maynard/[New striker]

what do you say to an MK Dons central midfielder after he's had a bad game??!?!

ED UPSON.

in my head no-one else has made this joke but I've only just heard of him after reading that post.

EDIT - ah he played for Yeovil didn't he? I probably made the same joke years ago then, forget it.

In a pre-season friendly at Deepdale in about 1989, home striker John Thomas was closely marked by Willie Burns of Rochdale....

Saying that, we have a cracking defence though. Even better if we can get another CB in, should be absolutely solid next season.

I thought Danny Mayor was just about your best player? No space for him in the side this year?

He's been injured this pre-season. My formation is probably completely wrong tbh haha. Probably 4-4-2 with Mayor on the wing.

Personally I think we could do with another box to box robust central midfielder as ive got concerns that Angel Martinez may never recover from his knee injury.. If he does, we've potentially got one of the best central midfielders in the league there...

Starting 11 vs Oxford (First Game of the Season)

Fulton
Mcginn Evatt Hird Jones
O'Shea Liddle Dimaio Ariyibi
Ebanks-Blake Evans

If Jon Nolan plays in the final 3 pre season games we have scheduled i'd be tempted to bring him in for young Dimaio, but other than that I think thats our best squad available to us!
