Still a couple of players short of Adkins' preferred 25 man squad, though it looks like any further additions are likely to be loans.

Short memories. Same people who would be offended when fans of league clubs would say similar when they were down there, comes across as very ill informed & dismissive

We ran riot in NL and then struggled in L2 the following season because of how different it is, both in terms of style of play and the week to week grind of being punished when you’re not quite on it (something we got away with a lot in non league) - I think if anyone’s qualified to make the statement, it’s a Notts fan.

In terms of starting line up, hard to tell but probably 3-4-2-1:

Hendry

We can chuck Aaron Nemane in the midfielders section now too and take out Conor Grant.

Yeah I think this is fair enough. There seems to be a lot of faith in Scott at the club but there is very little evidence on the pitch at this level to back that up.

I might be wrong but I thought Edwards was signed with him potentially being an option at 10 as well?
It's only one game and a friendly at that but I thought Jack Hinchy showed loads of potential.

Dan Jones (LB/CB)
Jesse Debrah (CB)
Nathan Smith (CB)
Mitchell Clark (RB)
Ben Lomax (RB)
Connor Hall (CB)
Sam Hart (LB)
Ben Heneghan (CB)
Kyle John (RB)

Midfield

Conor Grant (LWB/CM)
Tom Sang (RWB/CM)
Funso Ojo (DM)
Ryan Croasdale (DM)
Jason Lowe (DM/RB)
Ben Garrity (AM)
Ethan Chislett (AM)
George Byers (CM)

Attack

Jayden Stockley (ST)
Ruari Paton (ST)
Baylee Dipepa (ST)
Ronan Curtis (LW)
James Plant (RW)
Lorent Tolaj (ST)
Jack Shorrock (LW)
Andrew Buah (LW)
Benicio Baker-Boaitey (RW)

Hopefully can move on one or two fringe players elsewhere but if that happens it won't be until the end of the window when a team has an injury crisis / all other targets knocked that club back. Would like to see Shorrock and Buah get some experience out on loan and potentially Lomax as well.

We do still have Rhys Walters who is yet to agree a contract but reading between the lines the only reason he still has an offer on the table is so we can get compo.

You can't, he's an out and out winger who's been playing wing back. Never a defender in a million years.
Yep, that’s what I said, midfielder! Misquoting me like that tut tut :lac:

Sorry, I read that as defender not midfielder. Just checked back your post and still misread it, had to go back again before I read it right.

Ha, ha, see what you did there, just checked my post with your quote. How come it doesn't say edited?
Jeez, checked again it does say edited.

Part time teams like, say, Dorking who turned you over 3-1, then got relegated last season? The disrespect fans of promoted teams have for the NL once they get amongst 'proper teams' is something that should be studied.

I’ve spent most of our time up here telling people the NL is way stronger than they think, but it’s also undeniably true that there’s 15 games or so a season in the NL, mostly at home, that a club like Notts or Ches having a good season can win while making a few changes and playing well within themselves. There are pretty much none at this level, as we found out last season. You’ll still win plenty of games, but they’ll basically all be a right old grind.

I'm sure L2 is really good and all that, but you had a lot more going off last season, compared to season before, that contributed to your arseholes falling out than just being in L2.

It’s not really good, it’s just attritional. Teams try and play a lot more football in the National League. There’s a couple of exceptions, but basically every week is playing a Bromley but with better players.

Basically what’s happening in your game on the tele now. Swindon are likely to be a very poor League Two side this year IMO but you’ve not put them away and bang, one half chance and they’re level.

Slocombe isn't fine any more. Had a nightmare on Saturday, gifted two goals in the first fifteen minutes or so, looked ropey at Alfreton too.
Agree that if your best players get bad injuries it's very hard to compensate for long periods.
Wholly agree that Slocombe is about as far from fine as you can get. Stone seems perfectly adequate to me as a backup keeper but everyone at the club seems to hate him for some reason. No idea why.

It is attritional and the window makes a huge difference. In the NL you can just get a player in when you need one.

I mean, it's the ref that's done us there isn't it, he gives that clear pen we probably win that game 3-0 or something. You get games like that in the NL too. But sure no one is actually claiming L2 isn't a higher level than NL, it literally is the next level up with lots more money spent so it's got to be. I don't think that's the only reason you struggled though, which was the point. Much bigger contributing factors imo

Well, you already look better than us because I reckon I saw that exact game about 20 times last season except we’d have managed to lose it 3-1.

Better squad than the promotion season two years back on paper but football isn’t played on paper! So will have to see how the story unfolds.

I think we will keep the younger players whilst you have the Carabao and BSM games and send them out new year maybe. Shorrock probably could do a job now in fairness.

Dipepa will be the interesting one, fighting with Stockley, Tolaj and Paton with all the hype and supposed interest we are going to have to get him involved and give him chances otherwise his value will dip if he doesn’t feature.

If we can offload Jones and maybe Lowe as much as I love his interviews and get a stronger full back option I would be happy.

Interesting to see how Grant does at this level.

Walter’s I’m not plused, unplayable in the cup games, especially against league two opposition but didn’t step up in the league and doesn’t seem to want to be here. Injured and if he wants to go to a bigger club to waste in the academy that’s up to him, long as we get some compensation.

I honestly don’t know what to make of it. There are clearly some good players in there, but on the pitch they don’t look like a team and there’s just something missing. We’ll see. Zero excuses for Simpson given the budget he’s been allowed to spend.

Tend to agree, but I’m not convinced by your striker options.

Large squad - good luck trying to keep them all happy (we have the same problem).

I’m happy, think we look far stronger than last season in terms of depth and defensively. Been unsure at times over the summer, but I’d be disappointed if that squad didn’t make the top seven.

Honourable mentions to Redman Evans, Joel Mcgregor, Jaxon Brown, Billy Kirkman, Sonny Hart, Tariq Uwakwe who are unlikely to see much time on the pitch.

I think our chances of doing well depend on Kennedy working out a functional midfield because we haven't seen one yet. We also need players like Kilkenny to get hold of games and actually give the wing backs chance to get up the pitch and get crosses in otherwise it's pointless using that system.

Based on what we've seen so far it's hard to make a case for success but it's very early days and we've added 4 to the squad over the past week, who knows what difference that could make.

Yeah I think Brown and Abbott definitely give us enough depth to play 4 at the back regularly too - was reading from a Spurs fan that Abbott has played mostly full back in his career so far.

Could see a couple going on short term loans to the National League to get games, as long as we can recall them if there's an injury crisis.

For a team that has spent the season so far playing one up top this seems a bit of overkill in attack (though rather this than last years situation). Not sure where Hackford will get the opportunity to play and I’d say the same for the two midfielders we’ve signed to an already stacked part of the field for us. Good luck to DM keeping everyone happy.

Didn't get the final target we were after yesterday for whatever reason. Question marks basically everywhere, looking very suspect upfront with concerns over the fitness of some and the quality of others. RB also is badly lacking, with neither of the 2 options there being attack minded. Seem to have better depth and fewer hangers on, but this looks like a mid-table squad at this point. Happy for it to once again surpass my expectations.

This is us then, but still expect a couple more to move out on loan / permanent to National League clubs in next few weeks with them having no transfer window.

Also bit of talk about potentially bringing in another forward as a free agent so we will see on that one:

GK:
Ryan Boot
Max Thompson (New signing - On loan from Newcastle)

RB:
Vontae Daley-Campbell (New signing - Peterborough)
Devan Tanton U21 (New signing - On loan from Fulham)
Ryheem Sheckleford

CB:
Chey Dunkley (New signing - Shrewsbury)
Tom Naylor
Harvey Araujo U21 (New signing - On loan from Fulham)
Jamie Grimes
Ash Palmer
Tyrone Williams

LB:
Lewis Gordon (New signing - Bristol Rovers)
Brandon Horton

CM:
DJ Oldaker
Ollie Banks
Jenson Metcalfe U21 (New signing - On loan from Everton)
Mike Jones

Wingers/CAM:
Armando Dobra
Ryan Colclough
Liam Mandeville
Dilan Markanday (New signing - On loan from Blackburn)
Michael Jacobs
James Berry
Bailey Hobson

ST:
Will Grigg
Paddy Madden (New signing - Stockport)
Kane Drummond (New signing - Macclesfield)

Gives us a 22 man squad not incl. U21s and GKs so if we are wanting to bring that extra forward in someone will have to go (probably a Williams, Hobson or a Horton).

Very happy with that squad. Cook knew the defence needed improving from last season and he has gone out and done that. Naylor & Dunkley have looked really solid so far at CB and both comfortable on the ball which has helped our style. Mentioned on another thread but Lewis Gordon looks a very shrewd pick up, has been excellent in every game so far hopefully continues.

The options we have in those 3 positions behind the striker is where we’re strongest though, some real depth & quality in that area of the pitch.
