Something that I'd say about Cobblers is that they were direct last season from what I saw and seemed to lack a plan B in the playoffs. I was only partly paying attention to both matches vs Mansfield as had them on in the background, so forgive me if I'm calling that wrong. Is Curle whoever their manager is branching out from that this season? If he is then Hylton makes sense, but if his plan is to lump it up to Hylton then I think it could prove to be a bit of a dud of a marquee signing.

And also on that note, I think the George Moncur praise has been somewhat lavish. Yep, on his day he'll be unplayable. However, he's a player who has been called lazy by supporters of previous clubs.

Law of averages state that at least one or two of these big signings will flop. I think Smallwood is perhaps the most likely to be a bit and will prove to be a real coup for Bradford.

I'm more interested in seeing which of the many understated signings in the division will emerge as top players in their positions, as that'll be how the surprise package teams will be in with a whiff of promotion.

Whilst we have moved on from Curle (Jon Brady is now our manager, former youth team manager) we are still pretty direct. You are right, it was a massive issue in the playoffs as we didnt have another way of playing really and we dont have a target man to hold up the ball.

I think we will see a slight evolution this season without seeing liquid football (who does do that at this level though). But I dont want to see Hylton just chasing after lost causes. Happy to give Brady the benefit of the doubt though as hes done a lot of good so far.

You need to exploit the spin-off products to really cash in - partnerships with Leicestershire suppliers for Lincolnshire sausage with genuine terrior Stilton and Red Leicester go well here; in Spain it would be Lincolnshire sausage with chirozo; although that would some kind of perversion of the product to me it could be a winner down your way...

Still finding it very hard to assess how things will pan out. Bradford, Northampton, Stockport have done good business and will be up there, others have kept most of their better players from last season. Don’t know much about the four relegated teams, only one went straight back up last season and even Bristol Rovers cut it fine. The other promoted side Grimsby should hold their own, maybe better. There don’t seem to be any obvious basket cases, while Crawley’s business model is a bit strange and ultimately might fail, they’ve invested in the team. Rovers seem to be stacking up the injuries which isn’t good with a fairly small squad to start with.

I feel as others have said that our incoming business is done now and the focus turns to moving a few on as the squad’s excessively big. Saying that, with 53 days left still of the window it does feel too early to say we’re totally done. As it stands I’m more than happy with our first 11, the back ups are ok at best but it’s a top 7 squad on paper.

Some of our more challenged supporters are melting down but the truth is we’ve only lost a couple of players - Wollacott and Egbo and released Conroy - so the squad isn’t that depleted. I think it’s the ‘punt’ aspect of our recruitment to date that is a bit alarming although Shade looks decent. As with most clubs,that elusive striker is what we’re waiting for.

Yeah I'd be fairly confident with that midfield myself. Ben Gladwin and Jordan Lyden (if he can ever get fit) isn't a bad pair of backup midfielders either.

I think it's a pertinent question about McKirdy, last season just seemed to click for him. I think Garner let him get on with things off the field and from nowhere he's bagging 24 goals. He was starting to click with Tyrese Simpson before he was recalled and also him and Louis Barry looked to have formed a mini partnership in a few games. We absolutely would have been bumming around in mid-table without his goals that's for sure.

As for your final question, put simply no, but I would hope that's more of a not yet. We've signed Oscar Massey an 18 year old striker who Plymouth released and Jacob Wakeling released by Leicester but none of them, and our own 19 year old striker hope Harry Parsons has a first team league goal between them.

Harry is great mates with Payne and it's not yet clear how Scott Lindsey will manage him so hopefully he'll be able to prove last season wasn't a flash in the pan and he can repeat his form. We do like to do business late in the window historically so I am still confident we'll pull of a few decent signings and be able to compete this season. The chairman has stated our playing budget is up 40% but so far there is absolutely zero sign of that.

Swindon are a big club in this division and there is a lot of time yet for telling signings to be made. They were actually a bit lucky to beat us at VP last season but Williams was really stand out. Sure they will be in the reckoning next May.
