Unless you get a snorter like Hales answer Cook did you shouldn't be getting out on this wicket in the way Ballance and Vince have. You've got to give them longer though as much as I think Vince isn't cut out for this (Hales neither, I've watched him for long enough at Notts to always know that) Anyone who suggests Hildreth given all of Englands young talent needs a slap too.
Considering Compton has been given numerous chances with England when hildreth was the superior batsman when Compton was with Somerset, I'd say Hildreth is more than worthy of a chance.

I'm definitely for introducing the young talent we have at our disposal sooner rather than later, but as aber has said, Hildreth has been consistently excellent for years now and should definitely have been given a chance. Sadly, I don't think he ever will be now..

He's been consistently excellent at Taunton for years on the batsman's paradise of a wicket. His average drops by about 10 elsewhere. He's a decent domestic player and he's been unfairly labelled with the tag of struggling with the short ball just like many batsmen are without any real evidence to prove it...he just clearly shouldn't be at the top of the pecking order when it comes to English batsmen given how well a lot of young players are playing. Pure speculation though it may be, I've never been a fan of the rumours that he's seen as a bit flakey either, we've had enough of those.

Vince gone cheaply, but Root brings up 100 with a lovely clip through the left side. Cracking knock.

Vince has one innings left, then it's time to give someone a go who's scoring runs consistently at domestic level.

We have DBD or SNE at Kent if you like

Things are effectively still in our hands, win our two remaining games and we're through in 3rd/4th, and in a one-off QF, I'd fancy our chances against anybody

On about Kent btw

Errrr.............................................No!!! (I am afraid)

This is Vince's 4th test match. It's a bit early to discard him.

This is Vince's 5th test match but his latest knock was only his 7th innings at test level.

So yes, very much too early to be considering a change, that would be a backwards step towards the bad old days of England selection policy.

A player who could soon be under pressure for his place is Hales. I hope he gets the full series as I don't like to see too much chopping and changing, but he has looked suspect against the two decent attacks he has faced to date in his test career. He needs some scores in this series to remove those doubts about his technique against quality test attacks.

Whilst many uncapped batters have been talked up this summer as potential England players there is a lad at Durham, other than Borthwick, worthy of serious consideration but who seems to have gone under the radar.

http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/cricket/14638204.Jennings_sets_his_sights_on_England_spot/?

I didn't actually realise that Jennings had qualified to play for England. It's probably a bit soon for him but I'm sure they'll be looking at him. It all seems to have a bit quiet around Mark Stoneman - he was being massively talked up towards the start of the season.

Durham are unfashionable a bit like Glamorgan. Will take something special to get picked playing for them.

Been working in Holland all week, so not seen any of the play. What's the consensus on a good score / pitch? Traditional Old Trafford pitch that will be a nightmare to bat in day 4 and 5?

Surprised to see Rashid overlooked again.

With the pitches having fairly recently been moved through 90 degrees at Old Trafford I'm not sure too much notice can be taken of how they used to behave. Bumble said yesterday that since the change the pitches have certainly lost some of their pace and bounce.

This pitch appears to be a belter for batting and, judging by the lack of foot marks after day one, is a very hard surface. There has been conventional swing at times but little sign of any reverse and the square doesn't look very abrasive.

It would be a surprise if there isn't something in it for the spinners, and maybe some reverse, in the latter stages but it's not easy to predict how much.

Not so sure, you have Stokes and Mark Wood is taking wickets for the Lions so he'll be back soon enough I would think.

Collingwood, Harmison being two fairly recent Durham guys as well. Glamorgan would be on par with Derbyshire or Leicestershire imo.

Charming haha. Though I suppose with Durham, who also had Borthwick btw, is they actually won some trophies unlike us....but we have had talented players leave in order to attempt to gain International recognition, James Harris and Jim Allenby the most recent ones. I just hope we can keep hold of Nye Donald, can't see it though.

Didn't intend it as an insult or anything but just looking at the amount of England players selected while playing for them isn't great, generally leicestershire's players all move somewhere (Notts) before getting selected. To be fair we (Somerset) aren't much better at the moment Tres, Kieswetter and Buttler being selected with us is now a few years gone and you're looking at the Overton twins or Lewis Gregory in and around lions cricket for us.

Very well batted Woakes this morning. Got to say he has proven me wrong at least this summer, he definitely looks a proper test cricketer now.

See it through to lunch then push on for 550 at least I'd say with the depth of this batting order, don't give Pakistan even a sniff of a chance.

What a fucking joke of a decision that is to give Stokes out.

Fucking embarrassment of a third umpire call. How is a mark conclusive when you've said three times you can't see when the mark appears. If it takes you 6/7 looks at the same angle before guessing then it's not conclusive is it.

That was an absolutely horrendous decision. What is the point of the third umpire if they have no clue?

That was about as inconclusive as you could possibly get. Dreadful.

Not out at all. Marks on glove all through replay and third ump believed noise to be foot movement

Only the wicket keeper went up for it too which says everything. Utter joke

It was very poor from the third umpire. He even questioned himself numerous times before making a decision and still gave it out.

There is a time limit on calling for the review on field so maybe the third umpire should be under time constraints and if unable to make a call within that time then it becomes classed as inconclusive and given in favour of the batsman

The mark was clearly there before the ball got there. Useless prick

Upwards of 600? Seriously? We'll reach 500 tops and that'll depend on Root going on to a double and Bairstow continuing his form. Stokes will give his wicket away after a quick 30

Lol

I don't even care about declaring or winning anymore, I just want to watch Joe Root play cricket for 3 more days.

Root gone, what a superb innings. Set the game up perfectly and only got out in reality due to trying to accelerate.

Guess with Cook not declaring after the wicket then 600 must be the target.

That was one of his slowest scoring innings too. Think he was really determined to not give his wicket away this time. Wonderful player

Great innings from Root and Cook.

I fear getting 20 wickets on this track is going to be a long, very hard slog. I don't fancy it breaking up much, either, not even late Day 4/Day 5.
