We were far better at Euro 96 than we perhaps had been since '66 so that puts paid to your 'downhill from there' theory. We were also decent in '98 and '02 bar the odd group stage game and looked very strong in '04.

96 is the best I've ever seen England. That Holland game is my favourite England match.
