So football league trophy in 85 and 99, Promotion from fourth division to Premier league within 10 years, 8 consecutive years in the Premier League with the lowest budget and beating all the big boys. 2006 Carling cup final v United, 2013 FA Cup Champions, 2014 FA Cup semi finalists, 2013/14 Europa League and Community Shield, Winning League One again 2016.. For saying we were formed in 1932 and elected into the football league 1978 that's not too bad..

Can you tell me with the exception of Blackburn what the other "proper" Lancashire teams have done in the last century? Oldham, Bury, Rochdale, Blackpool? I'll wait

The jealousy and bitterness towards Wigan on this board is unreal and actually quite amusing:pmsl:

:hesk:Don't be upset

Oldham were original PL members, and Blackpool were in the Prem recently. Bury have won the FA cup I believe.

Cant think of anything 'Dale have done unfortunately.

But all of the above aren't BBB merchants. Perhaps if you were still at Springfield Park, and not lodging with a RL team, perhaps there wouldn't be this jealousy.

:lol::lol::lol:

So by the Wigan fans own arbitrary measures, Wigan are bigger than Rochdale.

Great point well made lad

Everyone in this league is bigger than us. Except maybe Fleetwood, who, like us, are sensible enough not to care how big they are...

Oh, and we got to the League Cup Final in 1962, when Wigna were still playing in the Cheshire League... :-)

I am sure many clubs could 'over achieve' with almost unlimited funds at their disposal.

So we had unlimited funds? We might have had a higher budget in league 1 and 2 but not when we were in the championship and we were still promoted. We then had the smallest budget in the Premier League and survived for 8 years. Oh and won the cup.

Blackpool did what 2 years?

Bury won the cup 114 years ago, that isn't this century.

Lodging with the rugby team? I would look things up before posting. The ground was built and is owned by Dave Whelan and Wigan Athletic, the rugby pay us rent to play there after they had to sell their ground and almost went bust until Whelan stepped in and saved them.

My, we are a bit sensitive. A bit of ribbing from a so-called smaller team, and you go apoplectic. You quite obviously don't belong in this division.

EDIT
Blackpool will always be bigger than you, for probably the 1953 cup final win on its own, let alone the number of years of top flight football before Sky 'reinvented' the game

Re- Blackpool, What defies size of a club? How far back can you go?

Not necessarily, but the 'Matthews' final will be remembered in another 50+ years time. Your win, as good as it was, probably wont be (well not outside of Wigan)

Anyway I'm looking forward to watching the Fylde game on the telebox. It'll be the biggest game in their history! I expect them to roll out the red carpet for us lot. I want videos from the BBC of Dave Challinor personally sweeping the away dressing room floor and instructing his groundsman to "prepare a fu**ing carpet". I wonder if our players will get off the team coach and walk the final 100 yards to the ground?

Nah, we lost the final 5-0. Oh wait, that was you!
:fish: to easy. I was proud to support a 4th tier side that got to a major final in this day an age, take the piss all you want it'll never happen again.

I genuinely had forgot Wigan had won the FA Cup though, as it's the only final I haven't watched in around 20 years due to been in France at the time. Sadly the cup isn't what it once was and as Gills said, the cup finals of the 50s throught to the 80s will always be talked about, as it was the main trophy to win and games weren't shown every two minutes on TV. Now prem clubs would rather end 17th every year than win a major trophy.

Anyway...

We have one more chance to beat a non-league team. We've been unbeaten since Lowe took over but still fallen to the bottom of the league. Our performances have been better but we're still making individual mistakes which we seem to keep getting punished for. Peterborough or Tranmere await one of us in the second round.

To be fair I can imagine it will be remembered, but only for them getting relegated in the same season

I suppose it comes down to how you judge a clubs size, fan base is up there imo. Pompey beat you and everyone else in this league easily, even in League 2 there support held up better than most do who moan about spending a couple of years in the championship.

I'll bite... Oldham were founder members of the PL and reached the league cup final I believe in 1990... crowds regularly around 15,000. 12 years in the top flight and 36 in the second tier.

Bury - two time FA Cup winners, won this division in 1997, and spent a couple of seasons in the Championship in the late 90's. 22 years in England's top flight during our 132 year history and 39 in the second tier. First side to score 1,000 goals in each of the top 4 tiers

Rochdale - N/A

Blackpool... do I even have to bother with this one... 1 FA Cup win, 28 years in the top flight and 50 in the second..

Wigan Athletic - 8 years in the top flight, 5 in the second tier... 1 FA Cup win.. hadn't averaged over 10,000 until 2006. Averaged 1,746 ten years earlier in 1996.

That said, Bury have always been a small club and fans are under no illusion of that. It's a small town in a poor area geographically in football terms.

O’Shea though rather Beckford.

Every thread on this forum is just full of non Wigan fans talking about Wigan. A bit obsessive. Some people on here talk about Wigan more than I do and certainly more than they talk about their own club!

The whole my clubs bigger than your club argument is so embarrassing. Club A fans says they're bigger than Club B cos they won the Anglo Cup thing in 1912 in pre season. Club B says they're bigger cos they took 5000 to Skegness one weekend.

At the end of the day everyones in this division because they deserve to be based on previous seasons results, your Fleetwoods to Blackburns are all equal counterparts currently.
