On the basis of this post I’m very much enjoying the fact that Bradford put Jonny Williams up in a hotel only for him to sack em off to sign for the mighty Gillingham instead.

I hope it was an expensive one (unlikely in Bradford) and he smashed fuck out of the minibar.
If I remember the story right, we flew Stephen Hunt over from Ireland years ago after he agreed to sign only for him to get off at Leeds Bradford, turn his phone on to a missed call from Steve Coppell and he shot down to Reading and signed for them.

Anyway I’m over Williams now the greedy sheep shagging bastard.

We've had months of people telling us that as soon as we got to L2 we were going to get hammered by FFP. What's Gillingham deal? Big turnover?
Last season the club brought in an estimated £250k in prize money through cup matches against Premier League Brentford, Wolves and the televised home tie against Leicester. Most of the actual spending of fees came from prize money than owner supplied funding.

In terms of wages for next season, the club has let go quite a few players who were still on good league one wages from when Gillingham got relegated the prior year. A lot of potential wage budget has been freed.

The owner has also prior tweeted that season ticket sales is up by about a third compared with last season as of when he last mentioned it maybe close to a month ago. Since season ticket holders wasn't offered an early bird price this year then a lot of those sold season tickets will be at a good £50 a ticket more expensive.

The buzz from the end of last year should ensure a lot more matchday revenue and therefore a boost to the potential wage budget.

Ah cool. So just proper budgeting rather than massive spending. Well there is my answer! Cheers.

Yeah i was reading it thinking it’s funny what people can convince themselves of.
They are spunking a lot cash to try and get promoted so instead of being defensive about that they should just embrace it and enjoy it, if it was us I know I would and I wouldn’t give a shit what fans of other clubs thought about it.

It's definitley not just good budgeting. It's the American owner with a pornstar pony tail on a mad one and we all know it.
There’s no point I know, but he’s a savvy businessman who has spent his entire life working in real estate and finance including some sovereign hedge funds. He and his wife are not in the business of losing money and they’re not treating the club as a play thing. Much like your owners they’re making a lot of connections in the local community which won’t ever bring any real financial reward.

Oh and the pony tail went ages ago.

I’m not taking lectures about finance off a Stockport fan thank you.

No problem with Gillingham at all though. They can crack on, I'm certainly not giving out lectures. I'm just pointing out the facts.

Have Wrexham made any new signings yet?

No doubt they will go for it, but it doesn’t look like they should be in the kitchen sink or even the going for it category yet.
They already went for it in the past two seasons. Taking players away from L1/L2 teams.

Yeah exactly. We will sign a couple, probably before we head over to the States for the tour, but we don't need anyone much.

At a conservative estimate we've spent the best part of 2 million on transfer fees alone over the past two years. And that's even with some of our best players like Mullin and Elliot Lee being free transfers.

As football fans we can often fall into the trap of “if we haven’t heard of the player before they must be no good”. Jack Senior won a trophy last year at Halifax. That trophy could have been won by Wrexham and North County. Broadbent was part of a team that were so close to beating Notts County and making the play off final. Fans of both these clubs have said how big a miss they will be next season. Richard Wood’s reading of the game will sort our defence out and we will be 10x harder to beat. Jamie Sterry will thrive in a better team and teaming up with Luke Molyneux again on our right hand side. Joe Ironside is exactly what our forward line needed last season. As has already been said, McCann is putting together a squad of players with character. Something that we have lacked for 3 years.

I hope we continued to be overlooked though
Gillingham fans please take a moment to look out your window. Somewhere out there in the vast expanse there is a poor little Doncaster fan who is fuming about not being higher up The Going For It league™. Please don't take your position up there for granted when there are others who want it so badly.

Fair point, can't argue with that.

I’m sure i’ll post something shit to be picked up on.

I pretty much guarantee it!

Still, we all owe you a pint for keeping that lot down in the conference! it’s all good

Our side is already good enough to compete, hence why we aren't splashing the cash this summer like Gillingham and Notts County. Well, not yet anyway.

I’m aware they took players from L1/L2 past season as they took one from us, but I thought this was about who is “going for it” in this current transfer window. My mistake.

To date Gillingham spending is very much budgeting. All paid by the cup run.

The future? Scally was very much into keeping to the budget and the new owner has indicated a desire to run the club in a sustainability fashion. We will see.

There is maybe the expectation of really pushing the boat out this summer but there is also a few whispers from inside the club that such was the form in the second half of the season that the club will only be looking to target two or three big signings to be competitive supplimented by a bunch of young players "for the future". Gillingham will be active but maybe won't spend what people will assume before the window properly opens.

Wrexham’s lowest-paid player was our highest earner last season - how we’re supposed to compete with the likes of them, Notts and Gillingham spending £10k+ p/w on ex-Prem players, I don’t know. That’s not far off our weekly wage bill for our entire squad of Halifax rejects.

What’s the opposite of Going for It? Hopefully Wild can use a combination of grassing on opponents and fist-pumps to steer us into mid-table again this season.

Haha, I know it must be tough for you cod heads to see your closest neighbours in this league actually putting a squad together finally, but your one season finishing above us (in our worst season in the football league since 1998) is behind us. Back to normality next season. Enjoy your cup final again next season :)

Why 1998 is that when football started in Doncaster? For most clubs it started at least a hundred years prior to that

Not tough at all. Let's face it, we're only really each other's local rivals when there's nobody else in the division. It's hard to be jealous of a club with such an apathetic fan base to be fair. I'm sure you'll be back half filling your stadium next season if you're up near the top of the division, but it was just quite sad to be almost outnumbering you in your own backyard in April.

For the record, I completely agree with you on your squad and McCann. Going under the radar right now and I reckon the early signs are that you'll be having an automatic spot push next season.

Is it because they are wealthy southerners?

Re. Jack Senior- the thing that always sticks in my head about him is that he always has a terrible haircut.

FFP does not exist at this level, there is a 55% wage turnover rule but you can bypass that easily. Still a limit to how much you can take piss and Gillingham are testing that with absolutely massive Going For It™️ contracts being thrown around since January.

Not the first time this cup run has been mentioned so I just looked it up. Just for clarification are we talking about you going out at home in the third round of the FA Cup having previously beaten two non-league sides?

In contrast, we'll have probably made about ten times what you did off the cup last season and we've just signed a Bradford cast off. There's absolutely no chance we're swooping in and beating them to their targets. Even if we take the very conservative stance that Williams is on 3k pw (purely to stop squabbling as we all know he'll be on closer to double that), then your cup run will maybe just about cover a single year of his three year deal and nothing else. So you can drop this cup money schtick right away as that's our line this summer.

Saving For It™. A new accreditation for clubs that spend thriftily for half a decade in the slim hope that for just one magical season the stars will align and their plucky manager will not get poached, their reject players will come good and most of the moneybags clubs will flop resulting in a single shot at promotion. Morecambe 20/21 provide recent evidence that this model can work in L2.

Whatever Barrow are doing it's pretty impressive. I expected you to crash back down into NL as soon as Evatt left tbh. I like Wild, even though he is the oldest looking man in his 30s this side of Jonny Williams.

Just had a look and added the extra 50p you will have got from that competition onto my calculations and it's still coming up with the same result.

Cup runs aren’t that easy to make money from, sure they are a nice earner but the money has to be split there’s policing, VAT to pay etc. Gillingham fans are very optimistic to think playing Brentford who are smaller than half the championship will help them be sustainable. I’m not sure why fans get so defensive about spending money, why not go for it money is everything in modern day football. We’re in league 2 because we haven’t had an owner willing to dig into his own pocket since the 90’s.
