Just had a look and added the extra 50p you will have got from that competition onto my calculations and it's still coming up with the same result.
See, you lot going on and on about your success in the FA cup, whereas Gills have seemingly got to all of the cup finals last season and none of us even knew because they haven’t mentioned this ‘cup run’ till about two days ago.

Cup runs aren’t that easy to make money from, sure they are a nice earner but the money has to be split there’s policing, VAT to pay etc. Gillingham fans are very optimistic to think playing Brentford who are smaller than half the championship will help them be sustainable. I’m not sure why fans get so defensive about spending money, why not go for it money is everything in modern day football. We’re in league 2 because we haven’t had an owner willing to dig into his own pocket since the 90’s.
That wasn't what we were pointing out.

The cup runs would not have made us a mint but as far as I am aware we have so far only paid transfer fees for Lapslie and Hawkins (jointly £100k + possibly rising to £200k) plus Nichols (£60k). Do you not think three games against EPL opposition, with television rights, would not have covered that?

So that just leaves salaries. We have just given about 10 new contracts to existing players whose old contracts were based on being in League One, but can now be based on League Two. Two of those - Macdonald and Tutonda - refused them and Macdonald left when he realised it was take it or leave it.

So now we need about 4 or 5 better players to complete our squad. We have signed Masterson from QPR and he can play at a higher level so we probably did offer him a generous contract. Maybe the same with Williams. We could possibly try and offer Agyei more than Bradford and he is a southern lad so could pick us. All those three are/were out of contract so will not require a transfer fee.

I would quite like to be seen as big spenders. No problem with that, but I would be concerned if we were splurging (going for it?) and ended up like Bury. I am confident we will not.

Brentford did tenner tickets and kids go free and the attendance was 16000 so I doubt you got much off that. Wolves got a decent enough gate in at £15 a pop for adults but it depends if they agreed to give you more of the gate receipts as I don't think they are duty bound to give you 45% like in the FA Cup. I don't think you get much for Carabao Cup TV rights. The money spinner would have been your FA Cup TV money, I'd have imagined. Think you'll have got over 100k for that Leicester match. Did you get on telly in rounds one or two? As that will have pocketed you some too. Think rounds one and two are about 50k and 75k respectively with half fees for replays.

As per rule 18.1.1 of the Carabao Cup competition rules, the away side gets 45% of the gates.

The official attendance of Brentford was 16,278 paying at least £10. Forty-five percent of £162,780 is £73,251.

The official attendance of the Wolves match was 26,943 and tickets were £15. Forty-five percent of £404,145 is £181,865.

Those two matches alone was worth just over £250k.

The official attendance for the FA Cup against Leicester was 8,567 and tickets were £25. Forty-five percent is £96,378. And then the club would benefit from match day hospitality. It was reported the club also received £70,000 in TV rights from the BBC for live screening (unverified)

Those ballpark gates figures were worth around £350k of bonus revenue that more than covers the estimated spending of £250,000 on players in January. Hence the original comment that the spending to date is very much within budget and not so much the new owner reaching into his own pocket.

The wages are a much bigger expense, Mansfield are good payers at this level and Lapslie and Hawkins were definitely decent earners here but the money offered to them was a massive difference.

Williams surely got offered loads of money for this level at Bradford and they were clearly beaten soundly.

I’m not even saying this to have a go, just think it’s better from a Gillingham fan perspective to embrace the fact you are clearly spending loads of money and Going For It™️

Whatever Barrow are doing it's pretty impressive. I expected you to crash back down into NL as soon as Evatt left tbh. I like Wild, even though he is the oldest looking man in his 30s this side of Jonny Williams.

Strangely, Wild is one of only two men in football who can look anywhere between 18 and 80 depending on the light. The other being Dwight Gayle.

It's hard to keep track of who you're offending on here

Say Doncaster aren't going for it, they're not happy.
Say Gillingham are going for it, they're not happy.

That’s a very simplistic view point, we made just over a million for getting to the final in 2013 and had more games and obviously far bigger games against the likes of Villa, Arsenal and of course a game at Wembley. Most players have cup appearance/bonuses to consider as well and things like policing costs, VAT. Regarding spending £250k on players if that’s transfer fees that’s a lot, probably more than we’ve ever spent at this level, wages are what take up most of a budget transfer fees are quite irrelevant. The word in the grape vine is we offered Williams £5k a week and Gillingham have beaten it, maybe they are putting all their eggs in that basket, it’ll be interesting to see how the rest of the transfer window unfolds.

Williams is from Kent and his family live close by. I’d imagine that was a prime reason for his choice. Quite why it was left to the last minute is a bummer, though.

Don't think Gillingham fans have an issue with the idea of "Going for it" but are pointing out that the club at time of writing haven't (yet). As per the prior maths, the outlay is very much spending the bonus prize money.

And as per the league's equivalent to FFP, the club can only spend up to 55% of turnover on player wages. Gillingham won't be offering £10k a week to anyone. Maybe a couple of players might be offered something close to £5k if they are genuinely elite players who are unquestionably top half league one standard. The FFP rules means the owner can put his hand in his pocket to pay fees but wages are capped. And so far Gillingham "going for it" are a couple of free transfers.

Ah okay fair enough on rule 18.1.1. That one always gets me. However, the prices you're quoting are the full adult prices so you need to bring that down a bit.

350k is still only just about covering Jonny Williams' three year deal if we're being kind to you lot in terms of what he's on. If the 5k Bradford offer is true though, it's a different story.

The Socialist heroes who own Grimsby didn't accept any money from their FA cup run because they are working class lads and don't believe in money from a moral standpoint.

Jason Stockwood grew up in a Council House you know?

Lots of Doncaster and Gillingham fans crawling out of the woodwork all of a sudden, but what’s the connection???

Ah yes, it’s because they’re Going For It™.

To be fair, it’s about time those two sleeping giants had millions to chuck at a promotion push, so hard to resent them for all the money they’re chucking around willy nilly.

Great to see Carabao Cup Rule 18.1.1 brought to the table. Huge development.
Serious business over here isn't it. There's been more talk of wages here than I've seen in 15 years of the National League.

I'm really hoping one of these teams going for it offers someone like Callum Ainley £4K a week purely on the basis of having L1 experience. Some really crap players are going to have a payday beyond their wildest dreams this Summer.

It's an eye opener isn't it? I'm starting to think there won't be a club waiting till a week before the season and then signing a bunch of randoms based on open trials.

Or Gary Johnson and his day of surprising signings. Each more surprising than the last.

We've blown you all out of the water today by announcing the re-signing of player/goalkeeping coach Josh Lillis on a one year deal, after he rejected a £7.2k a week deal at Gillingham.

They’ve put in a bid of £500k to sign him from you though.

Who’s called us sleeping giants? As far as I know there’s only one new Donny poster. Finally I don’t think we are splashing the cash like Gillingham, Notts or Wrexham

Sorry, I wasn’t being entirely serious - not sure if that came across, but I thought using ‘sleeping giants’ was a dead giveaway…
