That's great news about Alonso doing Indy, it used to happen all the time, I hope he wins it but it will be a shock to his system.
I hope he doesn't win it. I want him to be competitive but id hate the impression to be that any F1 driver can show up and win immediately. It'd harm the race's prestige.

F1 drivers used to do it all the time particularly in the Sixties and it used to be part of the F1 calender too. I don't think it would do it any harm tbh if Alonso were to succeed there. I touched the 1911 first winning car when I went there years back. Used to love that race.

They did do it often but only Clark and Hill won, from memory - I'm not counting those winners of the Indy 500 in the 50s who didn't compete in any other GPs that year. I want Alonso to do well but I'd like him to be beaten to show it ain't easy. :-)

I went a few years ago too - that museum is incredible. It's an amazing place, it's hard to describe to people just how big Indy is or what an average lap of 220mph looks like, or even how skilful oval racing is (Europeans, including Brits have a misguided belief that only turning left is a doddle). I have no doubt Alonso will do well, he's a top driver. And I think it's great that he's taken this challenge on. Wish more F1 drivers would do it.

Bottas on pole - not sure it will make much difference to the result though.

Qualifying for the 500 has just finished. On pole is Scott Dixon and Alonso has qualified fifth which I think is a hell of an effort.

Dixon's average speed for pole was over 232mph which I find mind blowing. That's almost four miles a minute, a mile every 16 seconds or so. Incredible speeds.

It was quite windy so lots of near misses at turn 2. Sebastian Bordais's accident there yesterday was huge.

Well if there is one place where you don't want to be 13th on the Grid - its Monaco!

Sure Vettel will be allowed to win.

Lewis screwed that up himself. He just had to get through and quit moaning about the car.

Jenson did well but the mechanical change means he starts last. If there was ever something needed to justify Alonso's decision to go to Indy....

Raikonnen's first pole for 9 years. Hope he wins. :-)

Massive crash in the Indy 500 but somehow both drivers walk away unharmed!

Fucking Honda!
Lol bet he was fuming when it blew up on him.

He drove superbly today, really impressed with him.

Max Chilton could win this. :-D

Gutted for Alonso. Still had an outside shot at winning. Fastest average lap, fair to say he couldn't have acquitted himself much better.

And what a race! Pleasure to watch such competitive, action packed racing. Don't like to say it but that beats any F1 race I've seen in years

Hamilton looks like he will gain some ground back on Vettel.

Good battle between Force India and Ferrari with all 4 drivers being allowed to race.

EDIT: Poor old Alonso - in the points and hud car breaks down right at the end!

Good recovery from Vettel, fortunate with Raikkonens problem though.

Shame to see a driver of Alonso's calibre struggle, which all seems down to the engine. From what's being reported McLaren are looking for a way to ditch Honda and you can't really blame them.

How Vettel only got a 10 sec stop and go I'll never know, deliberately rammimg another car should be a black flag. Especially as telemetry shows Hamilton didn't "brake test" him.

Yeah it's incredible. I assume that the 10 seconds penalty is only for the act of hitting Hamilton and not for the intent. If ban him from the next race if I was in charge - you can't have drivers behaving like that.

It's an absurd amount of money frankly.

In my opinion there are some Grand Prix that are sacred - the original 6 (Monaco, French, German, Belgian, Italian & British).

Then you have those that should happen as the countries have a good Motorsport tradition or have hosted good events for a long time that people want to watch - Brazil, Japan, Australia, Canada and the US. As long as they have races at these, I couldn't give a stuff where they stick the other ones.

But they should try to protect the British GP in my opinion. It's one of the "special ones". It would be good if the FIA and the BRDC can come to some sort of arrangement.

Hamilton has been given a 5 place penalty so going to be under pressure this weekend.

Hamilton on easy street.

Some good racing behind him - Ricciardo storming through the field.

No luck for Alonso again!

EDIT: Bad last 2 laps for Vettel!

Advantage back to Vettel.

Hamilton showing a sporting side at the end to let Bottas through for 3rd?

Fastest lap for Alonso!

Frustrating to watch Vettel, Raikkonen and Hamilton so close together and not a hint of an overtake.

Sums up Hungry really - not a great track for over-taking unless there is a mistake.

It was pathetic, none of them even came close to an attack.

F1 has been very poor this season. Proper overtaking (ie not in the pits and not DRS assisted) has been non existent.
